The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1972-05-25, Page 9Institute motto.
She suggested, however, that
perhaps the W.I, has outgrown its
motto; that its international
involvement and service is just
as important as local con-
tributions.
In her text, entitled "The Best
is Yet to Be", Rev. Seymour said
that the most vital quality the
W.I. can impart to theworld is the
"genuine sense of community"
which is so evident in rural
communities,
"This is what attracts me to
rural areas; the kind of at-
mosphere whereby a person is
accepted as a person, recognized
as a person, and where her worth
as a person is reaffirmed again
and again," she said.
"The world is growing closer
geographically through com-
munication and transportation,
but growing apart in one to one
relationships".
Rev, Seymour said the
Women's Institute must develop
this sense of community to help
newcomers adjust to areas where
many people already have their
roots, and to help young people
moving to urban areas survive
the onslaught of the city.
She closed her talk by saying:
"We must recognize the need for
this sense of community, and the
need to develop positive
responses to the changes taking
place in our time,"
Another event featured at the
annual meeting was the
presentation of a District Life
Membership to Mrs. W, D. Mack,
Crediton, for her long and active
years of service to the W,I.
Mrs. Mack became involved in
the first Institute at Crediton,
which her mother helped to start
in 1919. Since that time, she has,
held the posts of Branch
President, District President,
and for three years, was the
Convenes' of Historical Research
and Current Events at the
provincial level. "This has
always been my major interest,"
she said.
The highlights of her career in
the W.I. have been trips to four
A.C,W.W, conferences, in Lan-
sing, Michigan, Toronto, Dublin
and Edinburgh.
In her remarks to the meeting,
Mrs. Mack said that the W.I. is
facing its most challenging piece
of work in its long career. "We've
got to change with the times, but
not give up the old things that are
good, such as home and family".
The district annual had another
special visitor in the person of
Ann Davies, one of eight
delegates from the National
Federation of Young Farmer's
Clubs of England and Wales, who
, are visiting Canada as guests of
the Junior Farmers.
Ann is from Carmarthenshire,
South Wales and is in the fifth
week of her three and a half
month stay in Canada, She lives
with a different family each
week, and spent two weeks in
Middlesex County, staying with
families in the Thprndale area.
During her visit, she has at-
tended Junior Farmer's
meetings, a U.C.W. banquet, and
has visited Fanshawe Pioneer
Village, London, St. Marys and
Stratford.
She will also go on a week's
tour of Northern Ontario, and will
end her visit with a three-week
tour of Western Canada.
Ann assisted in the cutting of
the Institutes' anniversary cake.
