Hockey again Last week we talked a little about the upcoming international hockey championships between Canada and Russia and some comments from Ted Power of the London Knights who coached the Chatham Maroons in Olympic play a few years ago. Dates for the series have been agreed upon. The four games on this continent will be played in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver between September 1 and 8 and back in Russia between September 22 and 28. There is an encouraging word out of Toronto for hockey fans that are travel conscious. At least one organization is doing preliminary work on organizing a flight package to the Soviet Union to attend the four games there. The big question now is what NHL players will be made available for the Canadian team. The only qualification being that they are Canadian citizens. The three Canadian teams in the NHL have pledged their co-operation in forming a club but most fans are anxious to find out which teams in the United States will allow their players to participate. Despite opposition from the Boston Bruins owner, Toronto lawyer Allan Eagleson says Bobby Orr will be in the lineup when the team is selected. Eagleson controls more than 300 professional players and was in on the negotiations between Canada and Russia. Harold Ballard, main stockholder in the Toronto Maple Leafs has thrown his full weight behind the Canadian team and has offered the use of Maple Leaf Gardens for training purposes. Don't get excited With hockey dominating me sports scene so completely this past spring we have had very little chance to get into the baseball scene, especially on the professional level. It's too early for the many Tiger fans in this area to get excited but this could be another good year for the American league entry from Detroit. The Tigers are at present only a game or so out of first place and a couple of players have showed signs of a great year. The two players in mind are Mickey Lolich and Norm Cash. Lolich won his eighth game of the year Sunday to become the winningest hurler in the junior circuit while Cash smashed his eighth home run of the season, In thinking back to our stay at the World Series in Detroit in 1968 we remember talking to both Lolich and Cash before the Sunday game at Tiger Stadium and if they carry on to have the best years of their careers we would have only one comment. It couldn't happen to nicer guys. YOUNG SET WINS — the winners of the "B" division of the Exeter mixed bowling league playoff champions were the Young Set. Diamond humour Manager Ralph Houk won the annual fishing contest conducted by the Yankees during spring training at Port Lauderdale, Florida with a seven and a half pound bass. The next day a large notice appeared on the bulletin board of the clubhouse. "Dear Mr. Houk, please send a cheque for seven and a half pound bass purchased yesterday, $1~:76, It was signed Tony's Fish Market. Definition of umpiring by Ed Runge, retired American league umpire. "This is the only occupation where a man has to be perfect the first day on the job and then improve over the years." heron Johnson of the Phillies doesn't believe in a lot of chatter, but he can pack a lot of humor into a very small place. The big first baseman is considered baseball's grand master of the deadpan one-liner. Here is a sample: Fan recognizes Johnson and attempts to engage him in conversation. "How are you hitting them this year, Delon?" asks the fan. "Right handed," Johnson replies.
