This is my:summer swan-song.
Having somehow endured what
seemed the longest winter of my
life I have decided I can't bear to
miss even one day of summer (if
it ever: gets here) so I'm taking
• off until September.
The ;plans have been made for
sometime but now the actual day
of departure has arrived I find
I'm rather loathe to leave.
Of course, I'm looking forward
to seeing more of my family and
friends` and getting a lot of things
done ;Up around the house that
have 'been waiting for me for a
year or more.
The thought of spending a few
languid hours, dozing and sun-
ning by my friend's swimming
pool entrances me and hopefully I
will travel a bit and have the time
• to look up some old acquain-
tances I haven't seen in recent
years.
This all sounds wonderful yet
I'm a little sad.
I'm going to miss all the great
people at the T-A who make this
place one of the best in the
country to work; the arguing and
kabitzing with the editor, the
never ending supply of jokes (?)
from the sports editor and the
chatting and gossiping with the
girls and fellows in the back shop
and office have added a
• dimension of fun and goodwill
that I'll miss during the next
three and a half months.
There's also the worry that I

may go to pot or to seed at home.
A good deal is to be said for
having to get up in the morning,
move around smartly to get the
necessary chores done before
putting on your makeup and
dressing to get down to the office
by a certain time,
However, one nice thing about
leaving is that my duties will be
very capably taken over by
Susan Greer. You will remember
Susan came to us earlier this
spring during slack week at UWO
where she recently completed a
course in journalism. Now, she's
back for the summer and her
youthful zesty approach to this
column and other writing for the
paper will be happily received
I'm sure.
All I ask of you readers is that
you be as nice to her as you've
always been to me.

Ningiyuk's Igloo World
Back in the winter we ran an
article about Anna Rokeby-
Thomas of Kirkton, who was
having a children's book
published this month.
Well, Ningiyuk's Igloo World is
now off the press and a delightful
little story it is.
I read it over the weekend and
although it is primarily a child's
story, it contains much authentic
information about the north and
the Eskimo that adults will find
interesting, too.
Mrs. Rokeby-Thomas and her

husband were missionaries in the
Arctic and her book has been
drawn from personal experiences
there.
Her love, for the northern
people shines through in a very
tender way as she describes their
fun-loving but often hard life-
style.
Eskimo legends are skillfully
woven throughout the poignant
story of a little girl's search for
her real mother when she
discovers she is adopted.
It's a book that would be loved
by your favorite little person and
it will soon be available at
MacMillan's Stationery, in
Exeter. The local library also has
a copy on order.

Mentally Retarded Week
This is National Week for
Mentally Retarded,and Eleanor
Scott, principal of Huron Hope
School has penned some lines to
express her philosophy towards
these special children.
Because of her experience in
teaching retarded children for
several years Mrs. Scott is able to
speak with understanding and
wisdom.
Listen
to their Laughter
Don't waste your sympathy on
these retarded children.
They are more like normal
children than they are unlike
them,
Like any child they love and
hate.
They feel resentment and
satisfaction and pride.
They can be hurt and they can
be hurtful.
They laugh and they cry.
Use your energies to teach them
to live in a world that they
find difficult and sometimes
impossible to understand.
Teach, them that they are
important.
They can do so many things.
Believe in them and give them
the confidence to believe in
themselves.
Let them grow up with a sense
of personal worth.
Give them a chance to have what
everyone deserves
a chance to learn
a chance to have the dignity
of work
a chance to make their
contribution however
small it may be
a chance to have friends.
Love them and listen to their
laughter.
— By Eleanor Scott
When Robert Shaw, conductor
of the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra, appeared before the
Rotary Club, he prefaced his talk
by saying, "Since I came to
Atlanta I have divided my time
between speaking and music. In
music I have better writers."
and blood tests, have their teeth
brushed with fluoride and receive
their required vaceinations.
This was the first clinic of this
kind held in Exeter, and while the
tests given are not included in the
prerequisites for starting school
in the fall, public health super-
visor, Sandra Malabar, strongly
advised it. She said it was
designed to screen pre-schoolers
for health problems that might
interrupt their education later on.
She pointed out that a hearing
or visual deficiency could go
unnoticed in a small child and
cause difficulties with his lear-
ning process. She said children
are sometimes diagnosed as slow
learners when all the time their
problem was a bearing or vision
defect.
Children attending the clinic
will be starting school in Exeter,
Stephen, Usborne and Hay
townships in September.
Assisting Miss Malabar with
the clinic was county health
nurse Helen West and her staff,
and several public health nurse
students from the University of
Windsor who are doing a three
week 'observing' term at county
health units.
