Home care advisor speaks
Your help is needed!
Bob, Taylor, recreational
director for Huronview, says
there is a serious shortage of
volunteer help at Huronview.
Especially needed at .this time
are old-time musicians for the
Monday afternoon program of
dancing and singing.
Volunteers are also needed for
Wednesday afternoon to help
with table games such. as cards,
crokinole, checkers, etc. and
Friday, help would be ap-
preciated to conduct games of
bingo.
Programs are always needed,
Live entertainment consisting of
singing groups, school concerts,
variety programs are enjoyed by
the citizens of Huronview,
Persons who have travelled
and have interesting slides and
commentary would be most
welcome,
Sunday evening is often a
lonely time for the residents and
at the present there are only two
groups conducting services. once
a month. The 1.(3xeter district
Christian Women's Club conducts
a service of music and words the
second. Sunday of every month
while the Christian Reformed
Church, Clinton, holds a hymn-
sing the last Sunday in the month,
The Huronview people would
receive other such groups gladly.
Many of the residents can no
longer get out into the community
so. the community must be
brought to them.
If you or your group have the
time or the talent contact Mr.
Taylor at Iluronview.

Mrs. Cardno said there is a
great shortage of home-makers
who receive $1.75 per hour plus
mileage.
She said she is hopeful that
home care courses will be made
available through the high school
night course programs.
There is no joy in our
house . our old dog has been
tied up,
Although each of us offered to
take turns in paying her penalty
for being a dog.by having the rope
put around our necks in her
stead, the police have been
sympathetic but firm . < . no

The trouble is Tammy has lived
her 15 years believing she's
human and although we take her
aside to try to explain it to her she
still finds it incomprehensible
that the rest of us may come and
go while she, alone, can only
shuffle out to the end of her rope
and back,
She is the picture of despair
and bewilderment as she looks at
us through dimming eyes, for she
can't understand why, never
having hurt a living soul in her
life and having been a good doggy
citizen for 100 years (by human
standards ) , she's now in-
carcerated from all her long-time
friends.
Every morning for years her
habit has been to call on an old
lady down the street to offer a
cheerful 'good morning bark' and
receive in return a kindly pat on
the head and tasty tidbit.
From there she wandered over
to the two senior citizen apart-
ments to make a check that
everything and everyone was in
order there.
Next, she's trundled over a
couple of streets to see if all is
well with some folk she's been on
first name basis for many years.
The tour was always rounded
off by a final call on the neighbors
across the field back of us who

have beers loving and spoiling her
for over a decade with pork
chops, expensive cookies and the
occasional left over.
Left-overs sometimes left her
cold, however, such as the time
the neighbor could only muster
up a slightly stale muffin.
Although not to Tammy's taste,
she could never bear to hurt
anyone's feelings so she
graciously accepted the donation
and trotted off.
Imagine her embarrassment a
few minutes later when the
neighbor's husband caught her
trying to get rid of the offensive
muffin by digging it into a
snow bank •
"Didn't you like that stale old
bun, Tammy?" he asked sym-
pathetically.
So nonplussed was she at this
disconcerting situation she could
only lay at his feet to beg his
forgiveness by making a noble
attempt to chew up the unsavory
offering.
These daily visits usually took
her about an hour after which she
returned home to lay in the sun
the rest of the day and let it soak
into her rheumatic joints,
Her rheumatism was so bad
during the winter we often had to
lift her up the three steps into the
house but each spring she is
suddenly rejuvenated and hops
about like a kitten.
She's a funny old thing; as soon
as the first flake of snow flies she
heads for the house and can only
be persuaded to limp out for her
rounds when her health permits.
However, once the snow leaves
she's an outdoor girl and even
insists on sleeping in the carport.

Reports from the rummage

Every morning she rolls over
And over in the fresh, green grass
giving forth happy, grateful
doggy utterances for just being
alive in a world she believes is
filled with good and kindness.
Her mission in life has been to
But no more.
Of course, we've been trying to
tie her up for years. Always,
someone has been defeated by
the crushed, hurt look in her eyes
and after extracting a promise
from her to 'stay home' they've
unloosed her.
But like most of those who grow
old, her mind gets foggy, she
forgets, and becoming lonesome
for friends she wanders off.
I confess we've been of the
mind that it was worth paying the
$5 to get her out of the pound
occasionally to allow her her bit
of freedom.
This year, however, we hear
rumours the fine is up con-
siderably and then, too, we have
to admit the law is the law,
We agreed with Mayor
Delbridge, however, when last
week he questioned the
legitimacy of complaints from
people who get upset just because
a dog wanders across their lawn.
It seems to me if there are
those who have nothing more in
their lives to worry about than an
old dog dottering around the
streets they are very, very,
lucky, indeed.

The poor old editor just can't
make up his mind.
One week he's all for holding
the line on the population ex-
plosion and advertises his baby
gear for sale. The next, swayed
by the local hospital report that
the nursery is not paying its way
he decides to cancel his ad.
By the time another week rolls
around he's of still another
persuasion, so in goes the ad once
more.
And he talks about me jumping
on bandwagons!
At least I stay on one wagon
and don't start changing courses
in the middle of raising kids, so to
speak.
He thinks by waving a red flag
in front of me I'll rise to the bait.
Not this time, Mister.
And it's not that I'm over the
hill or too old or anything like
that. After all, Sarah was 90 when
she bore Isaac,
Speaking of Sarah, I'm
delighted with her sense of
humor, Apparently she thought it
was so hilarious that she could
become pregnant at that grand
old age she named her son Isaac,
meaning Laughter.
Well, Isaac Batten is a nice
name.
