NEW PLANT MANAGER — Harry Adamson vice-president and
general manager of Cook's Ltd. of Hensall this week announced the
appointment of Earl Reichert as the manager of the firm's new
elevator near Centralia. Earl, shown above in the new office has been
transferred from Hensall to take charge of the new operation.
Delays in planting
can prove costly
Distilleries are receiving an
increase in profits equivalent to
$3.00 for every bushel of corn they
use, while Ontario corn growers
are receiving less than their cost
of production, according to a
recent NFU release.
The recent increase in the price
of spirits announced in the
provincial budget by the Hon.
Darcy McKeough is turning out
to be a windfall for Canadian
distilleries. This price increase
will raise 8 million dollars for the
provincial government, 0.7
million dollars for the federal
government and 6 million dollars
for the distilling industry
Blake Sanford, Co-ordinator for
Region 3 tOntarliP of the
National Farmers' Union. said
this week at a meeting of Local
340 at Harriston, that this 6
million dollars in profit will be
heaped on top of the profits
already enjoyed by the
dist Merles, while corn producers
are forced to sell corn below their
cost of, production.
Forty percent of the increase is
going to the distilleries or ap-
proximately 10 cents per bottle
26 ozsi Estimating that the
distilleries extract 30 bottles of
liquor from a bushel of corn, this
represents an increase to the
distillery of $3.00 over and above
previous profits for every bushel

of corn used, or $240.00 per acre
of corn yielding 80 bushels per
acre. The corn grower at present
is receiving gross returns of $1.10
per bushel or $88.00 for the same
80 bushels of corn.
Mr. Sanford said that similar
increases in returns were also
granted to the breweries and
wine manufacturers. Many
people in Ontario were of the
opinion when price changes were
announced for alcoholic
beverages in the Ontario budget
that the increases were all taxes
but are now finding out that the
booze industry is also increasing
already substantial profits with
government approval and
assistance.
—Industrial giants like
Seagrams, evho last year had a
profit of 66 million and Walkers
who showed a profit of 48 million
will be able to increase their
profits in spite of inflation, while
corn growers and farmers in
general will face bankruptcy as
inflation takes over.
The projected realized net
income for Ontario farmers in
1972 will be at its lowest level in
the last ten years. As a farmer I
am not asking the government to
camouflage any price increases
that I may receive, but only ask
for government policies that will
guarantee the survival of the
family farm as the main source
of food production in our coun-
try," Mr. Sanford said.
The Government of Ontario has
accepted the recommendations
of the "Ross Report” on egg
marketing in Ontario and will
implement the principal
recommendations as quickly as
possible. This announcement was
made Thursday by the Hon. Wm.
A. Stewart, Minister of
Agriculture and Food during a
meeting with the members of the
Ontario Egg and Fowl
Producers' Marketing Board.
Earlier the Minister had made a
similar statement in the
Farm machinery does wear out
and replacement parts are
required. When this occurs the
cultivating or seeding program
could be delayed, says Hal
Wright, Secretary-Manager of
the Ontario Farm Mchinery
Advisory Board.
Most of the farm machinery
parts depots can fill 90 to 92
percent of the daily orders
received from the dealers.
Parts orders received prior to 3
p.m. are normally shipped the
same day, Mr. Wright said,
All major farm machinery
companies now use Telex. This
allows them to determine in a
matter of minutes, whether these
parts are in Edmonton, Montreal,
Winnipeg, Racine, wherever
parts depots are located. Then
it's just a question of deciding
which depot can ship the part the
fastest and/or cheapest, said Mr.
Wright.
Not all "back orders" are an
emergency, and if there is no
rush the part can be shipped the
cheapest way. Howevewr, if the
Legislature.
The priority recommendations
included in the Report of the
Royal Commission appointed to
Inquire Into the Egg Industry in
Ontario called for the establish-
ment of an egg marketing plan
with sales quotas as quickly as
possible and that such a plan be
introduced without a producer
vote.
"We accept these recom-
mendations by Judge James F.
W. Ross coming as they do after
an extensive study of the egg
machine is broken down and
production is being delayed the
decision is up to the customer.
Mr. Wright advises that you
make sure your dealer knows it is
an emergency. Let the dealer
know you're prepared to pay for
long distance phone calls and air
express charges. He can then
demand action and get your
machine in operation as soon as
possible.
CNX, CPX, and trucking
companies do not make pickups
on Saturdays, Sundays and
holidays. Parts depots maintain a
skeleton staff on Saturdays and
holidays during the production
season but the dealer must make
the pickup himself, since there is
no public transportation.
Mr. Wright pointed out that
delays in corn planting usually
result in one bushel less per acre,
per day of delay in planting.
Cook's open
new plant
The new facilities for Cook's of
Hensall opened this week at their
new site in Stephen township, just
south of the police village of
Centralia.
Cook's vice-president and
general manager Harry
Adamson said Monday the new
elevator, office and warehouse is
open in time to serve the spring
seeding needs of district farmers,
Newly appointed manager Earl
Reichert is taking orders for
seed, fertilizer and chemicals at
the Centralia location and con-
tracts are available for various
crops.
The elevators will have a
storage capacity of one-half
million bushels and the new
facilities will be able to handle
the 1972 crop of beans and corn,
Reichert said five or six em.,

Want immediate
agency powers
"Ontario's Egg Marketing
Board must be given agency
powers immediately," Gordon
Hill, president, Ontario
Federation of Agriculture
demanded Saturday. "This move
would give egg producers
complete control over egg
marketing in Ontario."
Judge James Ross proposed an
agency marketing board in his
one-man judicial inquiry report
handed down Thursday, He
recommended that a sales
agency should be set up without a
producer vote.
Agency powers would allow the
Ontario egg industry to take part
in a proposed national egg
marketing plan, Judge Ross
noted. He urged fast action to
save many producers from
bankruptcy.
Hill says he is impressed with
the "thorough study of the in-
dustry and intelligent findings"
in the report. "For someone
coming in from outside the in-
dustry, he's displayed a
remarkable grasp of producer
problems."
Hill also urged immediate
implementation of another Ross
recommendation: Government-
backed loans to hard-hit
producers. He noted that the
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture had made a similar
proposal to the Ontario govern-
ment in its brief to the Cabinet six
weeks ago.
"Government action has been
delayed for weeks awaiting
Judge Ross' report" Hill said,
"The financial state of egg
producers has become more
critical in the meantime; fast,
decisive, government action is
now mandatory if this industry is
to be saved for farmers" was
Hill's closing remark.
industry in Ontario, and we
recognize the need for immediate
action," said Mr. Stewart.
"In a meeting held with the
members of the Ontario Egg and
Fowl Producers' Marketing
Board we asked them to continue
their present promotional func-
tion and in addition, regulations
have been filed granting that
Board the authority to establish
marketing quotas as of April 20,
1972 . "
"Having accepted the
recommendations of the Ross
Report," said Mr. Stewart, "the
Government of Ontario will
establish an Egg Plan complete
with marketing quotas without a
vote of producers. This will be
done as quickly as such a plan
can be drafted. In order that no
time will be lost in developing
such a plan, TOPECON, a group
of agricultural economic con-
sultants, has been engaged to
work closely with the Ontario
Farm Products Marketing Board
in developing the details."
When this new plan is com-
pleted and ready for im-
plementation, it is the intention of
the Government of Ontario to
quickly establish whatever new
structures are necessary to carry
out the intentions and objectives
of the agency-type plan that will
result.
