Well, the first fish-in at the
Morrison Dam is over and I'm as
limp as a dead mackerel to prove
it.
With all the years I've got a boy
ready for the opening of trout
season you'd think it would be a
snap. Not so . . especially with
this youngest lad we're raising.
He's one of those nuts who must
have every detail planned and
doubled checked at least three
weeks in advance. Re spends
hours puzzling over lists as long
as his fishing pole, This wouldn't
be so bad it he didn't insist I
check them half a dozen times,
too.
"Are you sure 50 worms will be
enough?" he asks as he wrinkles
his brow and flicks his tongue
over the sharpened end of his
lead pencil. "And don't you think
I should get another pair of
boots? How do you know the milk
will keep cold in the cooler? If
these matches get wet they won't
be any good . why didn't you
get the other kind? What if I lose
my hooks? I better buy some
more tackle."
And so it goes . worry,

act this way.
When I go away, I open a
suitcase 15 minutes before taking
off and throw in whatever hap-
pens to be at the front of the
closet or at the top of my
drawers.
Friday evening, we finally got
him and his two pals out and
settled on the bank of the river.
When we left he was too busy
checking his gear to say goodbye,
Late that night I awoke in a
cold sweat and across my mind
flew all the terrible things that
could happen to them out there in
the dark.
Why on earth did we let them
go? They're only babies. Suppose
they forgot their promises and
went in a boat and got tipped out
into that deep, treacherous,
numbing water? And who knows
what kind of sadist might be
lurking around to do harm to
those dear little fellows camped

out there by themselves?
Imagine what would happen if e
spark from their fire blew
against the tent and set it on fire
while they were all sleeping.
Morning couldn't come quick
enough when I grabbed my
camera, on the pretext of getting
some pictures for the paper, and
headed out to the dam. Would I
find corpses or would they still be
alive?
They were alive, and they were
having a ball. Oh, they looked a
little glassy eyed from lack of
sleep but they had womped up a
good breakfast, and although
they still hadn't caught any fish
they were sure the next time they
threw in their lines they'd pull out
a whopper.
The day was warm and breezy
and sunny. There was a peace
blanketing the lake, the river and
the greening banks that made
me wish I could chuck everything
and spend the whole day there
myself.
Of course, when he arrived
back home the next day (cour-
tesy of other parents) the first
question we asked was, "Did you
catch anything,"
"Yeah," he answered as he dug
deep into the pocket of his old
army jacket.
At worst I expected a dead,
mutilated fish but what I got was
a live, writhing 10 inch snake.
Springing back 20 paces I
shouted, "Get it out of here. Don't
you come one step closer."
He looked crushed. Stroking
the reptile's slimy little head he
demanded, "Just give me one
good reason why I can't keep
him."
Without taking a breath I gave
him six.
1. I am going to have a stroke in
about two minutes and drop dead.
2. You will then be a motherless
child roaming around the streets
with only a snake in your pocket
as a companion.
3. Snakes are fair weather
friends. He might think today he
wants to forsake his other
slithery little pals of the wild for a
human buddy but in less than two
days he'll have changed his mind
and want to go home.
4. Snakes cannot be paper
trained and you know how you
hate to clean up messes,
5, Who ever heard of a celebate
snake. In a short time he'll want
to date and maybe even marry
and raise a family and you
wouldn't want to deny him that
would you?
6. Snakes eat living things.
What if you couldn't supply
enough mice and he began to eye
your father . ?
"Oh alright," he grumbled as
he took the little beast outside to
let him go, "But you sure know
how to break up a beautiful
friendship."
Thank goodness do.
