Youngsters from Exeter and district, participants in this year's minor bowling program again displayed their excellent appetites at Monday's annual hot dog feed at the Exeter Legion hall. Due to numerous cases of illness, the number of boys and girls was down from other years but the hot dogs continued to disappear quickly. T-A photo Junior Hawks get individual awards Page 6 Times-Advocate, May 4, 1972 FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS By Ross Haugh Final wind- up The hockey season will officially wind up Saturday on a couple of fronts with championship celebrations and wind-up activities. In Exeter action starts at the arena at one o'clock with all members of the Exeter minor program from the squirt to midget divisions invited for a free hot dog feed. At 4:30 also at the arena, championship festivities for the new Ontario Junior "D" champions will get underway. The Exeter Hawks led by the Exeter Legion pipe band and fire trucks will parade through the streets. All members of the team and management are expected to ride in full view on the back of a goodly number of pick-up trucks. Four hours later at the Exeter Legion hall, it's "Meet the Hawks Night" with all supporters of the club getting the opportunity to extend congratulations for a terrific performance by an enthusiastic and dedicated bunch of young hockey players. Any club that can win 20 of 22 playoff games on the way to a provincial title is worthy of all the praise that can be given. A small admission will be charged to defray expenses of the orchestra. The Country Tones will be providing the music for dancing. Various presentations will be made during several intermissions throughout the evening. While all the team and individual trophies were presented at the Hawks annual steak banquet last week, they will again be handed out for the benefit of all supporters. The chores of selecting the players for the various awards was not an easy one. In two instances, the players themselves made the choice, one other trophy was awarded on the basis of votes of all persons in attendance at the banquet and the balance by management. We would like to again congratulate the Hawks not only in bringing home the first OHA title to Exeter but for providing their rabid fans with an extremely exciting season of hockey. It was a pleasure to follow a club that played as well as the Hawks did and proved to be gentlemen, on and off the ice. Their popularity was shown time and time again by the support shown by teams that were eliminated along the way by the Exeter youngsters. While they failed in their bid to win an Ontario championship, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets will be getting together Saturday night to complete the season. Little news Despite the end of the hockey season and some signs that the weather is going to warm up in the near future we hear very little about baseball activities for the summer. In intermediate baseball, the Huron-Perth league, one of the oldest loops in the province is expected to be back in action. The defending Ontario Baseball Association Intermediate "D" champs, the Dashwood Tigers will likely be ready for combat in a couple of weeks. We have heard some rumours of an Exeter club being reorganized. There appears to be plenty of playing material in this area and a good club could be put together. Any persons wishing to help in organizing a club in any way are asked to get in touch with Jim Hewitt or Jim Pfaff. The Exeter Minor Baseball Association under the guidance of Bud Preszcator and Bill Dougherty will again be providing baseball for the younger boys in various age groups. At the elementary school level, recreation director Alvin Willert is setting up leagues this week for both boys and girls. Willert expects to have about 14 house league teams in the age ranges from 6 to 14. Summer program The playground and swimming programs will be conducted again in Exeter by the RAP committee, quite similar to last year. Personnel to fill the positions of playground supervisors, swimming instructors and lifeguards are currently being engaged, Alvin Willert reports the swimming pool should be open for business the weekend of June 17.
