"Anything. Goes" :fashions
for spring at .C.CAT show
"Anything Gees for Spring
1972" said commentator Brenda
Haute, Tilbury, as she opened
Centralia College's most
professional and successful
fashion show held at Open House
last week,
Her young, fellow students
came on to prove her point by
swinging out on the runway in
nifty, breezy numbers many of
which were reminiscent of the
'40's,
Wearing clothes they had
made, and in some cases
designed themselves, they
bounced down the ramp to the
bright tunes of Bobby Caminiti
and his quartette who were
garbed in blue and white striped
blazers.
The lively presentation of
things for the young included
gay, spring dresses with longer
hemlines than in the past; elegant
formals, snappy sailor outfits,
crisp little girl smocks, feminine
boudoir clothes, pantsuits and
smartly tailored spring coats,
Although the two-year diploma
course in textiles and clothing
construction is not intended to
turn out fashion experts, several
of the senior students showed a
flair in this field that would be
envied in the garment industry.
Carol MacKay won the award
by South Huron District Women's
Institutes for suitability and
construction. Her winning, self-
designed outfit was a grey
wool pantsuit with cuffed pants
and collarless jacket with red top
stitching and tiny red button
trim.
Close to 1000 came to see the
two fashion presentations staged.
Wednesday and Thursday.
Sharing the chore of com-
mentating was Diane Walker, of
Thorndale, Paula Hewitt,
director of a modelling agency
and a lecturer at Centralia,
supervised the show.
After the fashion show, Bonnie
Wheeler, Hamilton, was given
the Ontario Dietetic Association's
award for the best demonstrator
in foods, She is a student in the
Food Service Administration
course at the college.
old Trends are New Trends
The Centralia show of clothes
and those shown in local stores
reveal flashbacks to years past.
Hems are longer; midi and
longuette lengths are in while the
mini is almost a thing of the past.
Hot pants have been modulated
to shorts.
Gathered or set-in waists are
also making a come-back,
Shoes are featuring platform
soles with ankle straps much like
those worn in the '40's.
Navy comes on strong this
spring and so does the corn-
binations of red, white and blue.
The nautical look is showing
up in everything from sp-
ortswear to evening dresses.
The layered look is still popular
with vests, jackets and boleros
being worn.
In makeup, lipstick is brighter,
cheeks are rosier and hair is
curlier.
The array of materials and
hues is almost unbelievable.
Geometric prints, embossed
voile, gingham, seersucker,
stretch knits, brushed corduroy,
polyester lace, acrylics, Jersey
crepes are only a few of the
materials from which home
sewers may choose.
Petite Bonnie Ovens and .Darlene Denham wear the little girl frocks
they made for the fashion show.
