The amount recorded as received, which also included memorial gifts and bequests was $34,426.47. Our Association is very grateful for the support of the community in all areas; response to Christmas Seal letter, press, radio and the many volunteers involved in both program and campaign. The primary aim of the Christmas Seal Organizationis to prevent disease and its second objective is the early detection of disease with the introduction of the patient into an adequate health care program. In recent years it has been shown that chronic bronchitis and emphysema are the second most common cause of disability with respect to socio-economic loss. We are carrying out screening programs in many localities throughout the two- county area and your locality. Screening programs have both educational and practical value for the community as well as for the person involved. I feel that the Federal Government should have taken into consideration the fact that a producer of hogs selling to an operator of a small processing plant would not get the subsidy of $5 per hog. In order for a processing plant to get Federally approved grading he must slaughter 50 hogs per week. Now a business of this size is no longer a small processing plant! I feel that not only is this producer suffering but the far- mer operating a sow-barn (raising up to weaner hogs) is being hurt by this practise as he, also receives no compensation. Let's give small business a break, Ron Merner Pres. Abattoir Assoc. Pea a ea mee4 Dear Mr. Editor, In recent issues of your paper you have suggested that council study the feasibility of adding fluorine to the town water sup- ply. I question the need, even the advisability of adding fluorine to an entire water supply when it will benefit only young children and could be harmful to others. It is also difficult to control the dosage — do all children drink the same amount of water? If it is agreed by dentists, doctors and nutritionists that fluorine is beneficial to children, would it not be better to add it to milk and have the bottles of milk containing the addition clearly labelled so that those wishing to have fluorine for their children could buy it. This fluoridated milk could be supplied to the schools and in this way the children in the townships could benefit also. I think everyone would agree that we should reduce tooth decay and to this end there are several measures we can take as individuals, Since milk is our best source of calcium we should ensure an adequate intake of milk whether it be in the form of whole milk, skim milk, milk powder added to other foods, milk puddings or sauces. Vitamin D from fish liver oils is required daily as is Vitamin C from citrus fruits, ripe bell peppers or rose hips. Both vitamins are essential for healthy gums and teeth, Probably contributing most to tooth decay is our intake of sugar. Sticky candy like taffy is worse since it takes so long to dissolve. Brushing teeth or rinsing the mouth immediately after eating sweets is beneficial. It was pointed out that when a sweet drink such as a cola is dripped steadily on a tooth over a period of time, the tooth will dissolve. Parents, teachers and grand- parents should not use candy to reward children, A candy treat now can lead to painful treatment later. The natural sugar in fruit gives the same amount of food energy as the sugar in candy without the destructive effect on the teeth. With thousands of bushels of apples and an abundant supply of milk in our county we have little excuse for wasting our money and more important, jeopar- dizing our children's health by buying candy and sweet beverages, Sweet & Sour or Pineapple Chicken $1.75 Almond Guy Ding __ $2.50 All Hot Sandwiches___95° Roast Turkey 9.75 Yours truly, (Mrs.) Margaret McClure R.11,1 Crediton, Ontario February 9, 1972 friends who volunteered their help--thanks a million. I'm sure your weariness will be eased by the knowledge that the less fortunate benefited because of your efforts. Venison and moose burgers were featured during the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Ellwood Epps, Clinton donated the moose meat. The venison was donated by a group of Bank of Montreal hunters which included Keith Lindsay, Ingersoll (formerly Hensall) and George Beer, Henson. The meat was delicious and we at Pineridge extend a sincere thank-you. Credit must go as well to the area snowmobile clubs who turned out in great numbers, Groups came from Seaforth, Kippen, Varna, Hensall, Exeter, and Crediton to mention a few. The children enjoyed the annual costumes worn by the Varna group. Numerous donations were made and all certainly added to the success of the event. Thanks go to Murray Baird of Huron Variety, Hensall who donated 250 ice cream bars; Eon's Health Centre and Drysdale Hardware of Hensall, Tuckey Beverages and Bob's Variety of Exeter who donated, prizes for the children's free draw; C.F.P.L. for the radio which was raffled; Wayne McBride and Doug Cooper for syrup; John Elder Enterprises for use of snowmobile suits; Gord Kirk of Weston Bread Co., for buns and balloons; the Nother Trophy Co., for the celebrities Trophy; Eugene Cotter, Gino the Clown, of Clawson Mich. for entertaining; Alf Denomme and friends and the Lesperance Trio for music provided; Joe Overholt for donating $35 of his fee; Zurich and Exeter Legions and pilot Don Bell for their part in the outdoor activities. The response of our own and the surrounding communities is really encouraging in our effort to help a very deserving cause. The theme displayed on the wall of the Chalet— "a man never stands so tall as when he stoops to help a crippled child" was put into practice many times over. We are proud to live and work in a community such as this. Thanks to all who helped and to all who came. 10% Discount ON ALL TAKE-OUT ORDERS RESTAURANT WALLY'S Yours in Kin, H. A. Stuart, President. Dear Mr. Batten: The new snowmobile by-laws have been proposed so that machine, operators and non snowmobilers alike can enjoy the winter, The town council have shown consideration for both parties when drafting the by-laws and our Police Force have been most lenient with offenders. It is terribly dismaying to see a few people ignore the very generous laws. Such neglect can only result in a total ban of snowmobiles from Exeter streets. A few careless offenders could drive all snowmobiles out of town. 411404111110111, Anamiptemaiim Sincerely, Don and Shirley Mousseau George and Lucille Beer , E111111111111111111111111111011111)11111111111111111111111110111111111)1111111110011111111,0111110talaillialallialiagatailliallaajallIIIIIIIIIIIMIRRINVIRMINIIIIIIM111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 NOW 2 Locations To Serve You Gary Spencer, owner of The DERBY DIP, is pleased to announce he has purchased THE CHUCKWAGON DRIVE-IN at Exeter North from Keith Whilmhurst The same tasty snacks and dinners will continue to be served at the respective drive-ins.
