"Something very different and
drastic must be done by the
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture over memberships or
else fold up," said Mason Bailey
recently elected president of the
Huron Federation of Agriculture.
Mr. Bailey was speaking in
Clinton Thursday night at a
directors meeting of the Huron
federation ln 1971 individual service
membership totalled 6,204, far
below the 9,000 total the OFA
needs to break even financially,
he said.
Individual service membership
introduced two years ago -
permits farmers to join on an
individual basis rather than on a
regional basis.
From a report prepared by a
special four-man committee of
the OFA - on which Mr. Bailey
Served - it was revealed that
membership fees in 1968 across
Ontario totalled $118,207, com-
pared to $91,104 in 1971.
Mervyn Smith, of RR 1,
Walton, a vice-president of the
Huron federation, said volunteer
recruitment of individual service
members is not working out.
Trends indicate that the county
membership fee will continue to
decline, Mr. Smith said, but
added that until the new system
of individual membership was
brought in, the OFA was on its
way out,
"It wouldn't have lasted more
than a couple of months," he
said.
Jack McGregor, a hog farmer
from RR 2, Kippen, said the
federation is fighting for
everything for everybody and
"there are too few doing too
much for everybody."
The directors will study the
recommendations made by the
special committee, one of which
proposed the establishment of
regional offices based on a
minimum of 3,000 farmers.
A full-time secretary field man
would spend his working hours
selling memberships.
Elected to the executive were:
Adrian Vos, of Blyth, Jack
Stafford, of Wroxeter, and Vince
Austin, of Dungannon.
The fourth executive position
will be filled at the next director's
meeting.
