A very unfortunate situation has come to light in
recent weeks as two area hockey groups have been
competing for the use of several minor hockey players.
We're talking of the disputes between the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association and the Huron Park hockey
group over the eligibility of players.
We are not going to attempt to say who's right
and who isn't because there are pluses on both sides of
the ledger.
Most of the players in question reside in the
country and could legally play for either club. Ontario
Minor Hockey Association rules state that if the mileage
difference from a players residence to the town in which
he plays is less than five miles, the player may make his
own decision.
To start at the beginning, about six or seven years
ago, the Exeter Minor Association advertised that they
would accept registrations from boys within a radius of
15 miles to play minor hockey in Exeter.
At that time, boys in the Crediton and Mount
Carmel areas did not have a place to play and many
took advantage of the opportunity.
Last year, Huron Park started an organized
hockey association and several players that had played
in Exeter for a couple of years made the switch.
This year, Huron Park are competing in the
Shamrock minor league for the first time and are
claiming the right to a couple of players that have
participated in the Exeter program for many years.
We realize that H'uron Park, especially being new
in outside competition need a nucleus of good hockey
players to put up a reasonable show.
Every club is entitled to the right to try and get
thebest possible team for competition but we feel the
boys should have the right to choose the club with
which they wish to play.
The OMHA has ruled that Eugene Glavin is to
play with the Huron Park midgets this year. This
decision is correct as far as residence is concerned.
We would wonder if possibly "squatters rights"
might not enter into this situation. Glavin, now an
outstanding goal tender started in novice hockey in
Exeter at the age of nine as a defenceman, He moved to
the goal position in his second year of novice all-star and
has' come up through pee wee, bantam and midget
ranks.
The big problem with this situation is that Glavin
is being counted on heavily for a future goal tending job
with the junior Hawks.
On each of the teams he has played with over the'
years other youngsters have been discouraged from
carryOg on at that position because of Glavin's
dominance as a goalie.
Some of the other minor problems now being
encountered were actually brought on by the youngsters
themselves. Last year, when some of the boys failed to
male the Exeter all-star teams they switched to Huron
Park, where they were able to make the grade. This year
as second year players in a certain category they have a
better chance of making an Exeter club and want to
come back.
The answer to a lot of the headaches could be a
meeting of officials of both local groups and the OMHA.
Good show on tap
Anyone with a few hours to spare early Friday
evening could do a lot worse than make a jaunt up to
the new gym at South Huron District High School.
At 7:30, Friday evening the final rounds in the
third annual Red and Black wrestling tournament will
be started.
With five top notch schools invited to compete
against the South Huron team, a lot of exciting action is
assured.
With coach Doug Ellison again at the helm, the
South Huron boys, last year's Huron-Perth champs
appear to have an even better squad this year.
In a meet with three other schools Friday in
Wallaceburg, our local grapplers completely dominated
the winners circle.
Get your tickets early
Western Ontario is being honored this year with
the awarding of the 1972 Canadian Figure Skating
championships to London.
The week-long competitions will start at the
London Gardens on Tuesday, January 11.
We have been told by one figure skating
enthusiast in town that anyone wishing to reserve
tickets for any of the performances should do so
immediately by contacting London Gardens on
Wellington Road, South.
Not heading for Japan
For a few days last week, the executive and
players of the Lucan-Ilderton Jets had hopes of
representing Canada at the 1972 Olympics in Japan.
Before Steve Storey and Don Urbshott were able
to borrow any Japanese language books their hopes
were dashed
While the deadline for the decision on sending a
Canadian representative is this week, the chances are
slim.
Steve Storey told us Tuesday afternoon, he had
received a call earlier the same day from Middlesex MPP
Bill Stewart who was attempting to help the Jets in
getting a berth in the Olympics.
Stewart, the minister of Agriculture reported very
little hope on Canadian Amateur Hockey Association
officials on reversing their earlier decision on not
sending a Canadian team this year.
