The experience that a child seeks is the spark which gives the book life. Without it, the book is doomed to oblivion and may just as well not have been published. In choosing a book as a gift, it is important to look for those which children willenjoy owning-- books they will read and re-read with fresh pleasure and not soon discard as a toy., The most important qualities to look for in children's books are the same as those in books for adults. Surely the age level of a book should not determine its quality! Has the book something to say? Is it well written? Is it a story which will catch and sus- tain the child's interest? Has it good characters, true to life? Has it imagination? Is the subject matter of real interest to a child? If it is a book of science, is it scientifically sound? Is the in- formation correct? Is it presented in a clear style? In books for your children the pictures must also be considered as well as the text. Remembering that a child's first book will not only give him pleasure but will help form his taste and ap- preciation of literature and art, there is the double responsibility of giving him the best, Is it the right book for the right child? Do not underestimate a child's power of appreciation, for it is boundless, With the books you give him, his experience will broaden and his mind will grow. b, 4 g C HA1NWAY STORE Invite You to Pre-Xmas Shopping Mon., Nov. 29 0 I 9:00 a.m. to 9 .00p .m. 10 Mrs. George Anderson, of I.:xeter District Christian Women's Club, led the song- service Sunday evening. W.I. board meets at Hensall South Huron district board of W omen's Instil Lacs met in Hensall hall. November 16, with Miss Ruth Skinner, president, presiding. Reports were given for county rally. by Mrs. Klapp, Zurich; area convention by Miss Skinner, Elim %Hie; and officers con- ference in May by Mrs. Gilbert Johns, Exeter, Plans were discussed for the district annual to be held in Egmondville United Church in May with Seaford] branch as hostess. Next board meeting will be held in April, 1972 in Hensall, When choosing a book as a Christmas presentfor a child there are many things to consider, The price of children's books has soared to an unprecedented height, due mainly to the in- creased cost of production, but unlike other commodities, the price does not necessarily in- dicate its worth. The old adage "you can't judge a hook by its cover" was never more apt than it is today. Attractive format, good binding and expensive color printing may explain the high cost but is not a. guide to its intrinsic value. When a child takes a book in his bands, he is anticipating an experience. He opens a book expecting it to tell him something--something that will strike a responsive chord with him. If he does not find this "something he will discard the book, no matter how attractive it All Purchases • ViMiiiitliCO*04A0ACti4tOACC ,.. . n liote Do You Y.S Get Him to ?F,t b. ,s Fill Your r Wardrobe It needs this n Christmas?
