pickings. But I made it, by
borrowing. That's when started
iorrowing, and I've. never eau&
tin since.
But it wasn't so bad, really.
Beer was in cents a draft and a
donor went a long wey. I didn't
smoke. Girls didn't expect you to
take them out for drinks, dinner
and the theatre. They just ex-
pected you to take them out,
I lotel rooms were no problem,
on weekend leave. One of us
would check into the old King
Eddie in Toronto, and take e
single room. Price was. $3.40, with
10 percent off for servicemen.
Then about five more would
sneak up and six of us would
share a single room. sleeping
three On the bed, crossways, the
others on the floor. Average cost,
IS cents each. We didn't need
much sleep anyway.
Wages went up with each in-
crease in rank. As I recall it,
e hen I was commissioned, 1 got
about $6.5)) a day. This was
a valth beyond the dream of
a' arice, in those days. The
Australian and U.K. officers
envied us bitterly. They were
paid about half that, to maintain
the standards of an officer and
gentleman.
I don't envy the servicemen
their increase. They have a job
'hat is especially thankless in
peacetime, But if I were quite a
few years younger, I'd be run-
ning, not walking to the nearest
recruiting station.
Hut my kid brother is another
matter, I'm smarter than he is,
though he'd never admit it. I
could always beat him up. He's
got his only child married off to a
a ealthy Englishman. He's going
to have a fat pension in just a few
ears.
It's only fair to serve notice on
him that he may have long-term,
perhaps permanent, guests,
e hen lie retires and picks out his
villa in Spain.

The 50th wedding anniversary
of Mr, and Mrs. Norman E. Cook
was held November 16 at their
home in Hensall,
They were married in London,
Ontario by the late Rev. A. E. M.
Thomson, couysin of the bride.
Mr. Cook is well known in the
area, having been a former
president of Cook Bros. Milling
company and Cook 13ros, Auto

However, the Scholls are
thinking ahead to retirement.
They own a cottage in the north
which they plan to visit more
I requently.
"We've also got a lot of Canada
to see yet," Al stated.
The meat and grocery business
isn't something new for the
(;oldsteins. The new proprietor is
a butcher by trade and has been
engaged in this endeavour in
Toronto for some time.
They have three children, two
of whom are married. A 12-year-
old son is at home with them.
A native of the Monkton. area,
Al helped his father in the but-
chering business and he recalled
events of his initiation,
At the age of 12, he butchered
his first animal single-handedly.
Ile tied the animal to 0. tree in
the yard and killed it with his
lather's shot gun, lie then hitched
up the horse to the carcass and
pulled it into the driving shed to
cut it up.
Some years after that, in April
1946, Al and Reta opened shop in
Hen-sail in the small store for-
wily operated by Harry Mac-
millan,
"It was a typical country meat
store," Al recalled, However, it
didn't stay that way too long,'
In 1950 the Scholls augmented
self service and the services —
quite new at that time — was
such a hit that they. were soon
looking for room to expand.
In 1951 they purchased the
store next door from grocer
Harvey Keys. In that period they
look on their first extra help in
the person of Keith Volland. He's
still with them.
By 1953 the staff had grown to
six and three years later the
popular Mensal] couple had
joined the Super Save chain of
grocery stores.
This also increased business
and they again were in need of
extra room.
Their final addition came in
1961 when they purchased the
Goodwin dry goods store next
door.
Immediate plans for Al and
Beta will see few changes.
They're both staying on with the
