A plea to another reader produced the following recipe and she suggested walnuts or mixed nuts could be used in the place of peanuts if preferred, NUT BRITTLE 11 2 cups granulated sugar 1 2 tsp. cream of tartar ' 2 cup cold water 11 2 cups of nuts In large sauce pan or electric fry pan place sugar, cream of tartar and water. Without stirring cook over high heat, shaking pan occasionally until mixture becomes a syrup the color of molasses, Quickly stir in nuts; then pour onto a well buttered, thoroughly clean cookie sheet. NEVER-FAIL CHOCOLATE FUDGE 2 tbsps. butter 2/3 c, (small can) evap, milk undiluted 1 2/3 c, white sugar 1 2 tsp. salt 2 c. miniature marshmallows 1 1 2 c, semi sweet chocolatechips 1 tsp. vanilla 1 2 c. chopped walnuts Mix butter, evap. milk, sugar and salt in saucepan over medium heat, Bring to boil. Cook five minutes stirring constantly. Remove from, heat, Stir in marshmallows, chocolate chips, vanilla and nuts, Stir for one-two minutes or until marshmallows melt. Pour into buttered 8-inch square pan and let cool. Cut in- squares. Makes about two pounds. Speaker talks on doll history The regular meeting of the A.C.W. was held at the home of Mrs. T. Doige with Mrs. Ann Doidge presiding. Mrs. A. Carter opened the meeting with devotions on Thanksgiving. Reports were given by all committees. Mrs. G. Anderson gave an interesting report on how some of our money is spent in various mission fields as well as in Canada. Conveners were appointed for the bazaar to be held at the Parish Hall afternoon and evening of December 3 rd. Donations were given to the blind and the budget of the church. Mrs. E. Schillender then gave an interesting talk on the "History of Dolls"from the time of the cave men right up to present day dolls showing some of her collection over 100 years old up to the present dolls. Lois McFalls in- troduced Howard Robbins, the Grand Encampment of Ontario and P.N.G. Jean Johns in- troduced Mrs. Ruby Bell of Hensall, D.D.P. of District 23, who was presented with a cor- Over 75 members of the south Regional United Church registered for their annual meeting at Zion West United Church, October 20. The theme for the evening was "The more fully we love, the more we have to give others." Mrs. Lorne Hern with Mrs. Philip Johns at the piano opened the meeting with a spirited sing- song of old hymns with new tunes and encouraged the ladies to try and use them in their congregations. Mrs. Robert Ratcliffe presided over the meeting, calling on Mrs. John Eedy to introduce the speaker, Dr. Ruth Tatham, from the London Psychiatric Hospital. As her topic she chose human communications, noting there has been a great break-through in communications, by the teletype, Atlantic cable, telephone, T.V. She spoke of Alexander Graham Bell with his creative mind and his work with the deaf. Dr. Tatham said she felt to-day's generation are not com- municating with one another. We have eyes to see, ears to hear, and hands to feel but we are not communicating and said, it's who you are that counts, it is what you do that matters". St. Marys U.C.W. followed up the speaker's theme with a timely play, directed by Mrs. Crosby and Mrs. Rae Porter dealing with mental illnesss, communication and our attitudes towards this. A discussion period followed, which enlightened thoses present how to use plain common sense toward our fellowmen. Mrs. Ken Parkinson of Woodham U.C.W. dedicated the offering, which was followed by a quartette consisting of Mrs. G. Copeland,Mrs.Wm. Spence, Mrs. John Rodd, and Mrs. Lloyd Cowdrey, accompanied by Mrs. Nelson Baker on the piano. Mrs. Gilbank, Listowel provided the literature reviews of the United Church. The 1971-1972 study is on Africa. Zion West ladies were sage by Mrs, Iva Idle P.N.G. Twenty year jewels were presented to Mrs. Mary Fisher by Mrs. Ella Fisher and to Mrs. Stella Dixon by Mrs. Gladys Skinner. D.D.P. Ruby Bell and her in- stalling team then installed the 1971-72 officers in an impressive ceremony. They are Noble Grand, Mrs. Loretta Ball; Vice Grand, Mrs. Vi Coates; Chaplain, Mrs. Helen Bell; Junior Past Noble Grand, Mrs, Gladys Skinner. Musician, Mrs. Lena Willard; hostesses and Mrs. Wm, Morley, president, welcomed the regional ladies to the church. Mrs. Stewart Shier, 1st vice- president of the Huron-Perth Presbyterial, brought greetings and thanked Mrs. Ratcliffe for her two years as south regional president. Mrs. Walter MacDonald, treasurer, talked on stewardship. Kirkton U.C.W., under the leadership of Mrs'. Jack Urquhart assisted by Mrs. T. Elliott, Mrs. F. Sweitzer and Mrs. Cross, presented a closing worship in keeping with the theme. Coven ladies see African pictures The ladies of the Caven Presbyterian Church entertained ladies from Cromarty Gordon Auxiliary, and other friends at their regular meeting last week. Miss Hazel Macdonald of Goderich spoke and showed pictures of Africa which she took while teaching there. Special music was provided by Mrs. Daniel McLeod. Devotions, based on the 23rd psalm, were given by Mrs. H.
