At its meeting this week the
Middlesex County Board of
Education decided to protest
proposed legislation that would
do away with education fees for
wards of children's aid societies.
The proposal, if it becomes law,
will mean that the wards of
children's aid societies will no
longer be required to pay fees
when they attend schools outside
their regular home municipality.
This past year, there were 104
full-time students attending
Middlesex County schools far
whom nine children's aid
societies or homes paid $13,000 in
fees.
In protesting the change to the
minister of education and the
county members of the provincial
legislature, the board feels that
the waiving of fees will mean that
the county board will receive an
unfavourable proportion of wards
and will incur an unfavourable
cost.
The board also went on record
as favouring the retention of the

Westminster Ponds area south of
London as a conservation area
and outdoor education site. Board
chairman, T. G. Lloyd, reported
on attending a recent meeting of
municipal and education
representatives convened to
consider future use of the area.
He urged trustees to support the
efforts being made to preserve
the natural condition of the area.
In other business, the Board
decided to withhold approval of
the design for an addition and
renovations program at Medway
High School until a special board
meeting at the school next week.
Trustees wanted to have more
opportunity to consider methods
of reducing construction costs of

project.
