by downing Thorndale 8-2 on the
Dashwood diamond, Friday
night.
The story was little different
Tuesday night as the Tigers
travelled to Clinton and suffered
a 5-loss at the hands of the
Clinton Colts in a game called
after five and one-half innings of
play because of darkness.

The track itself has greatly
improved by 100's of loads of
gravel and stone dust being
applied to the surface and corner
banks. 120 horse stalls have been
semi-winterized.
Seating facilities for 2,500
people plus standing room is
available so that 5,000 race fans
can be easily accommodated.
This year the track is operating
under a class "B" rating so the
quality of racing administration

The sixth annual Mid-Western Quarter Horse
show scheduled for Exeter Community park, Saturday,
June 12 should be bigger and better than ever.
The Exeter Kinsmen club has taken over
sponsorship of the popular event and a lot of
enthusiasm is being shown by the club members.
Show secretaryNoel Veri reports that at least three
new classes have been added in the youth activity classes
giving youngsters more opportunity to perform and also
gain additional prize money.
A large array of trophies and ribbons have been
donated by Exeter and district merchants. Some of the
awards are being displayed this week in the window of
the clerk's office here in Exeter.
This is the second largest quarter horse show in
the province of Ontario and will draw entries from all
parts of Ontario as well as many points in the United
States.
While most entries are expected this week, Mrs.
Veri said she has received one entrant from the State of
New York.
The show will get underway at 8:30 in the
morning with most of the showmanship at halter classes.
The afternoon performance getting underway at
one o'clock will feature the more exciting events as far
as spectators are concerned with registered cutting,
reining, western pleasure and trail classes.
The additional classes are accomplished by
splitting several of the youth activity groups into two
age divisions. In each of the showmanship at halter,
youth western pleasure and youth horsemanship there
will be a section for those 13 years of age and under and
one for 14 to 18 years of age.
The Ontario Quarter Horse Association has one of
the largest following of youth activity classes in Canada
and the Association that sanctions all shows of this kind
insists on various events restricted to youngsters.
The judge for the full day's show will be Vernon
Schultz of Illinois while Don Nye of Hamilton will again
be the arena director and Fred Darling will handle the
announcing duties.
As of a year ago, there were close to 11,000
registered quarter horses in Ontario, the second highest
in the Dominion of Canada.
The quarter horse had its beginning as a race
horse. In the 360 years since its origin, he has retained
his, ability to beat horses of any other breed from a
standing start up to 440 yards, or a quarter of a mile,
thus establishing the name.
While Saturday June 12 is the day for the quarter
horse show, the following day, Sunday will provide
more exciting and interesting entertainment for horse
lovers.
The Exeter saddle club is sponsoring their second
annual "Pinto and Appaloosa" point award show, also
at'Exeter Community Park.
Line classes will get underway at eight o'clock in
the morning with performance events going in the
afternoon.
Wildlife molested
Exeter's recreation director Alvin Willert reported
early this week that considerable damage has been done
to; the wildlife population at the Morrison Dam area.
Late Thursday night or early Friday morning,
culprits removed eggs from at least three duck nests and
one duck was still missing Monday afternoon.
Willert said the numerous district sport
enthusiasts that donated monies to purchase the ducks
and geese are "a little more than upset" about the theft
and are considering laying charges.
The rec director said "some clues" as to the
identity of the persons responsible were left at the
scene. He added that if the eggs were returned within a
few days, they could be put into incubation. If this
happens, no charges would be laid against the offenders.
Another offer
Last week we mentioned that two members of
the Exeter Hawks junior club were drafted by Junior
"A" clubs. They were Randy Preszcator and Pete
Glover, who were selected by Toronto and London,
respectively.
Hawk manager Bob Baynham tells us that goalie
John Hayter has received an invitation to attend the fall
training camp of the Niagara Falls Flyers.
Blackbirds Important
We found a recent release by the Ontario
Department of Lands and Forests regarding the value of
red-wing blackbirds as insect eaters very interesting and
pass it along.
"It has also long been recognized that man must
live in harmony with his natural environment.
The red-wing blackbird is part of that
environment and it has been subject to much criticism
because of its tendency to congregate in large numbers
and feed on grain crops.
Recently two wildlife workers of the University
of Guelph, J. W. Hintz and M. I. Dyer reported on their
studies of the red-wing blackbird. The article appeared
in the Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 34, No.
4, October 1970, and provided the following interesting
facts.
They found that red-wing blackbirds fed chiefly
on insects during the period June 24th to July 19th. For
the period July 20 to August 14 the percentage of
insects in the diet decreased slightly and there was a
greater intake of weed seeds, small grains and corn.
During the period August 15 to September 10, although
the percentage of insects was still high, the birds fed
predominately on corn and weed seeds.
From these findings the article states "therefore it
seems likely that red-wings reduce the extent of damage
to economically important crops by feeding on certain
pest species of insects and are an important part of the
recently developed agricultural ecosystem in the Lake
Brie area".
Accordingly, the red-wing blackbirds are
considered to be serious pests during the period they
feed on grain, even though during their insect feeding
period they have benefitted man many times over the
amount of grain consumed, This is true of many
persecuted species."
