JUNIOR 'D' FINAL
Cheer The Hawks On
To Victory...At The
EXETER ARENA
SATURDAY
*SUNDAY
2:00 p.m.
First Two Games In Best-of-seven Series
EXETER HAWKS
vs
HALIBURTON HUSKIES
The Best Junior 'D' Teams In Ontario!
°vice win Ontario title
This hockey season of 1970-71 has to be
the finest ever experienced by the Exeter Minor Hockey
Association.
For the first time ever, not one but two clubs
representing the town have reached Ontario finals and
one has already won a championship.
The Exeter Broncos won the provincial zone
novice championship last week by defeating Blenheim
and three days later took the Shamrock title in the same
age category.
We would like to pass on our sincere
congratulations to Ron Bogart and Bob Pooley who
masterminded the youngsters through a very busy
season that encompassed 55 games in league, exhibition
and tournament play.
A real crowning touch to an excellent season
would be the capturing of the Ontario Junior "D"
championship by the Exeter Hawks.
This fine young club has reached the final round
and 'will be meeting Haliburton in a best-of-seven series.
The first two games of the series are set for the
Exeter arena this weekend. The first game goes at 8:30,
Saturday night with the second contest slated for
Sunday afternoon at two o'clock.
The Hawks completed a very successful regular
schedule season finishing in first place by something like
18 points.
In their own group playdowns the Hawks
disposed of Lambeth and Belmont and then took care
of a good Caledonia club in six games.
The young Hawk club has shown consistently all
season that they are able to come from behind despite
the score. Many of the regular season victories were
accomplished in the third period.
Using the same type of pattern, they eliminated
Caledonia with three consecutive wins after being down
two games to one in the seven games set.
This is probably the best balanced junior hockey
team • Exeter has been able to field in many a year.
Coach Bob White is able to send out three strong
forward lines, has two solid sets of defencemen and has
good goal tending.
White deserves a lot of credit in bringing a
comparatively young hockey club along to the Ontario
finals. Only two members of the current club will be
lost for next season because of age.
Reports on the Haliburton club say they have a
big, strong team which should make for an excellent
final series.
Best of luck, Hawks, as you head for the Ontario
championship.
Fun and games?
Fun and games. That seems to be the situation in
the current Ontario Hockey Association Intermediate
"B" playoffs between the Lucan-Ilderton Jets and the
Durham Huskies.
The original best-of-seven series ended in a
deadlock with each team winning three games with one
being tied. The OHA then ordered a two-game total
goals series to decide a winner.
The Jets on home ice at the Huron Park arena
swamped the Huskies 8-3 and appeared to be well on
the way to victory.
The cheering had hardly died down when club
officials received their copy of Durham protest to the
OHA.
The protest was based on two rules in the OHA
rule book regarding the residence of players.
Rule 109 states that each team must have at least
four players in the line-up for every game that is an
actual resident of the municipality which the club
represents.
The Jets since their inception three years ago have
been under the assumption that any player within three
miles of either municipality would qualify as a resident.
Sometime Saturday, the OHA executive in
Toronto without the apparent knowledge of convener
Hugh McLean of London upheld the protest.
For some strange reason, after tossing out the
result of Friday's game, the league executive decided to
order a best-of-three series with Sunday's supposedly
return game of the original series standing as the first of
a new set.
As this is being written, officials of the
Lucan-Ilderton club are on their way to Toronto to try
and straighten things out and we would hope to have
further information elsewhere on the sports pages in this
issue.
Reading further in the rule book, rule 402 clearly
states that no club shall protest the resident
qualification of any player after 48 hours of the final
game of the regular schedule or February 10 whichever
is the latest.
During the playoffs with Durham, the Jets have
indicated that Steve Storey, Don Urbshott, Jamie Robb
and Steve Proctor were the four resident players.
They were told by the OHA over the weekend
that players must actually live in either Lucan or
Ilderton to qualify as a resident and not within three
miles.
This would actually eliminate Don Urbshott, who
is the manager of the team and a member of the
defensive corps. Urbshott lives on the east side of the
Hyde Park Road, about 50 feet from the outskirts of
Ilderton.
Steve Storey, a resident of Lucan is actually the
only legal player if the OHA interpretation is correct.
It seems strange that a club would wait three
years to protest the eligibility of one of its opponents.
Also, the OHA appeared to be rather hasty in making a
decision, especially without checking with the district
convener.
We know that McLean is the convener as he was
at Huron Park arena, Tuesday night and actually set up
the two-games total-goals series.
Curling wind-up
The curling season will officially close at the
Exeter curling club, Saturday, April 17 When the annual
banquet will be held,
At this time all trophies and awards will be
presented for the various championships won
throughout the year.
The banquet will get underway at seven o'clock
and tickets may be obtained from any member of the
curling executives,
After being close to reaching
the final round for the Ontario
Junior "D" hockey championship
several times in recent years, the
Exeter Hawks, have finally made
the grade.
Last year the Hawks lost out in
the last game to the Norwich
Merchants who went on to take
the Ontario championship.
This time, the Hawks made the
grade and will meet the
Haliburton Huskies in a best-of-
seven series to decide which is
the best junior "D" club in the
entire province.
The Haliburton club will be in
Exeter this weekend for the first
two games of the series with the
next two contests back in
Haliburton the following
weekend.
The first game will be played
here Saturday night at 8.30 with
the second going Sunday af-
ternoon at two o'clock.
Smoke shortens
Ausable contest
The fourth game of the Ausable
Rec hockey league finals staged
at the Exeter arena Sunday night
was shortened when fire broke
out in the north stands at the
arena.
Shipka was leading 3-2 when
the game was suspended at 3,23 .
of the third period with players
scurrying to the dressing rooms
under the stands to save their
equipment and clothes.
The balance of the fourth game
and all of the fifth contest is
expected to be played Friday
night.
Lieury presently leads the best-
of-seven series two games to one.
Randy Becker scored twice for
Shipka in the curtailed contest
with the single goal coming from
the stick of Pat O'Rourke.
Bob Robinson and Robert
Bender were the marksmen for
Lieury.
The E xeter Broncos won the
Ontario Minor Hockey
Association zone championship
Friday night with a 5-4 win over
Blenheim to take the best-of-
three series in straight games.
The club sponsored by the
Midwestern Rodeo, coached by
Ron Bogart and managed by Bob
Pooley brings the first provincial
hockey championship to the town
of Exeter.
After winning the first game in
Blenheim by a score of 5-1, the
Exeter youngsters started off in
the second contest on home ice,
Friday as if they were going to
wrap the title up early.
They scored three times in the
first period and appeared to be
well on their way. The clubs each
scored once in the second period
to maintain the three goal Exeter
lead.
In the final period, the Exeter
boys went into sort of a defensive
lapse allowing the Blenheim club
to roam quite freely around the
net.
As a result the visitors scored
twice by the halfway mark to cut
the Exeter margin to a single
goal.
The game was seven minutes
old when Derek Regier opened
the scoring for Exeter on a three-
way passing effort with Darryl
Preszcator and David Bogart.
Near the ten minute mark it
was Paul Pooley scoring from
brother Perry and Bogart. The
third Exeter goal of the first
period again came from the stick
of Regier withthe assist going to
Paul Pooley.
The second period Exeter
marker was fired by defenceman
Randy Fisher on a solo effort.
With less than three minutes to
go and Exeter leading 4-3, Perry
Pooley took a pass from Darryl
Preszcator and scored what
proved to be the winning goal,
although it gave his club a two
goal lead at the time. It came
with six Blenheim attackers on
the ice and their net empty.
The fifth goal was very
B & J's move
in dart loop
The B & J's have moved into
undisputed possession of second
place in the Exeter Legion mixed
dart league behind the league
leading Dark Angels.
The Dark Angels continue their
dominance with a 101 point total.
The B&J's follow with 86 points,
while' the Dart Sharks are third
with 84 and the Doublers are
fourth with 82.
Continuing the closeness of the
race down the ladder, the Late
Niters have a season point total of
80 and the Sharpshooters are one
point back at 79.
Bill Smith has upped his games
won total to 46 with Keith Brint-
nell second at 38. Barb Hearn
leads the ladies section with 30
wins. Annie Lawson is second
with 23 victories.
Last week's scores were:
Dark Angels 5 - Swimmers 0
Canners 5- Sharpshooters 0
Itchy Four 4 - Scotties 1
Doublers 4 - Noisy Ones 1
Winkers 3 - D & S's 2
B & J's 3 - Late Niters 2
Shiphunters 3 - B A's 2
Featherflights 3 - Dart Sharks 2
If ignorance is bliss, why place
a brighter light above the mirror?
necessary as Blenheim stormed
back to score again witha minute
and a half to go and maintained
pressure right to the finish but
they were unable to get the
equalizer.
The Exeter novice club also
won the Shamrock championship
Monday night in Lucan by edging
Lambeth 4-3 in the third game of
a best-of-three series.
Exeter won the second game
Saturday afternoon 6-5 after the
two clubs battled to a 2-2 tie in the
first contest.
Perry Pooley's unassisted goal
with two minutes to go gave
Exeter boys the 4-3 Monday win
and the league title.
Pooley moved just inside the
Lambeth blueline and let go a
slap shot that sailed over the
goalie's shoulder.
Exeter moved in front with a
goal in the first period and two
more in the second. Lambeth
rallied with three unanswered
scores early in the third period to
get back on even terms.
Randy Parsons fired the first
period Exeter score on a play
started by Randy Fisher.
Fisher notched the first goal in
the second period on one of his
specialities, a blistering slap shot
from the point. Paul Pooley
scored unassisted a few minutes
later.
Lambeth had an excellent
opportunity to go ahead when
Exeter had two players in the
penalty box. Excellent penalty
killing by David Bogart, Randy
Fisher and Perry Pooley saved
the day,
In Saturday's 6-5 Exeter vic-
tory, Perry Pooley led the
scoring with a two goal effort,
Notching one goal apiece were
David Bogart, Brad Taylor,
Randy Fisher and Eugene
Clarke,
The overall season was very
successibl for the novice club.
They won 38 games, lost 7 and
tied 2 in league exhibition playoff
and tournament play.
The team over the year scored
292 goals while net minders Jim
\Teri and Steve Wells only allowed
83 opposition shots go by for an
average of 1,78 goals per game
while chalking up 15 shut-outs.

Junior D' provincial final
starts at Exeter, Saturday
The series swings back to the
north country for games three
and four the following weekend.
Exact dates and times of the
games in Haliburton will be set
when the two clubs meet here for
the first time on the weekend.
Haliburton is about 250 miles
north-east of Exeter.
The Haliburton team had little
trouble disposing of Southampton
to reach the finals against the
Hawks. In Southampton on the
weekend Haliburton won by
scores of 14-4 and 14-3.
The Haliburton team manager
Zurich bantams
win first game
The Zurich bantams in an
attempt to repeat as Ontario
Minor Hockey Association "E"
champions took a step in the right
direction on home ice, Saturday
night.
The Zurich youngsters edged
Oakwood 4-3 in the first game of a
best-of-five final in overtime.
The second and third games
will be played in Oakwood,
Saturday and Monday with
starting times set for 6.30 and 6.00
p.m. respectively.
The fourth game if necessary
will probably be played at the
Exeter arena, the following week
as ice at the Zurich arena has
been removed.
Gerald Weido was the scoring
star for Zurich with a three goal
performance.
Weido fired the winning goal at
4.30 of overtime after Oakwood
had tied the score at 3-3 with only
ten seconds remaining in
regulation time.
The other Zurich goal came
from the stick of Pat Bedard.
George Haggitt is coach of the
Zurich club and Glenn Weido and
Mcirris Webb handling the
managing duties.
is Scott Larue who played junior
hockey in Seaforth about 10 years
ago and he has relatives in the
Exeter and Grand Bend areas.
Hawks manager Bob Baynham
has made arrangements for
accommodation for the Huskies
when they are in this area.
They will be arriving late
Saturday afternoon and will be
staying at the Shillelagh Motel at
Lucan.
The Hawks may not be at full,
strength for the first two games.
Centre Larry Haugh who suf-
fered a fractured right wrist in
the final game against Caledonia
may be a doubtful starter
Saturday night.
The high scoring young centre
returns to his doctor today and
hopes for a lighter cast that
would allow him to see some
action.
