DALEY'S WEEKLY COMMENTS
Well spoken
.1
-- by SID DALEY
Branch 540's public speaking
contest held Friday was
successful, participation wise,
however due to the adverse
weather conditions not too many
braved the elements to attend as
spectators.
This did not dampen the
enthusiasm of the speakers
however and those who did
attend were entertained to many
varied topics. The final results of
the evening is as follows.
Junior Category; 1st, Gerard
Mitchell; 2nd, Matt Toonders;
3rd,Chery I Hardy. Senior
category; 1st, Joe Mitchell; 2nd,
Denise O'Brien; 3rd, Johanna
Engel. The winners of this
contest Gerard Mitchell and Joe
Mitchell, brothers, advanced to
the Zone A5 Competition at
Parkhill held Saturday, February
14.
I have just received
information that Gerard Mitchell,
The Lucan Ariens Club had
another exciting weekend. With
machines loaded on the
transport, everyone left the
Shillelagh to have an enjoyable
day at the Pineridge Chalet near
Hensall.
After all the dips and dives on
the trails all members went to a
room provided by the Chalet and
enjoyed refreshments.
The women left the men to
their own devices and took the
machines out on their own.
"We may not know the
mechanics of it all, but we
showed the men that we can at
least drive the machines," was the
comment of one of the women.
Great work, activities
committee. We would like to
extend a welcome to anyone
interested in joining our club and
sharing all our activities. Phone
227-4411.
Cancer society
planning canvass
The executive of the Lucan
branch of the Canadian Cancer
Society met at the home of Mrs.
M. H. Hodgins, February 11.
The coffee party for
canvassers will be held March 26
at 8 p.m.
Daffodil Sunday will be held
March 28, and the local campaign
will commence April 5.
Miss Cathy Kincaid
(London-Middlesex Miss Hope)
was a guest.
It is hoped to have a film on
research for the next meeting.
Special events for making
money were discussed. Mrs. M. H.
Hodgins gave a report on the
campaign conference at Westbury
Hotel, Toronto, which she had
attended.
speaking on "The Crafty Mole"
placed First and will advance to
the district finals to be held in
Chatham on February 20. While
Joe Mitchell, speaking on
"Insecticides" placed second.
A very special "Thank You"
to the Judges; Mr. and Mrs. James
Fulton, London and Dave
McClure, Exeter, for a very
difficult job well done, and to the
Ladies Auxiliary for the lunch
which followed the contest. I was
quite dismayed that more
members did not attend to see the
fine work the Legion is doing
with these youngsters in the field
of Public Speaking.
An old timer is a chap who can
remember when child psycology
grew in clump by the creek.
Branch 540 are happy to
welcome the following into
membership in the Royal
Canadian Legion: Maurice
O'Connor, Mark Gaudet, Barry
Remember,there is a business
meeting every Wednesday night
in the Arien's room at the
Shillelagh. Please note that the
time has been changed to 9 p.m.
Here's another no-no. You see
this at a lot of races — but
remember, like many other
things, it should be kept just for
races!
The driver stops the
snowmobile and an assistant lifts
the machine while the driver revs
the throttle. The purpose of this
is to clear the track. The fact
remains that, as well as snow,
chunks of ice, stones or other
foreign articles can fly out at
speeds up to 70 m.p.h. and
seriously injure the person
standing behind.
It is important to clear the
track, but do so by first checking
that no one is behind the machine
and then either tip your machine
on its side or have your assistant
stand at the side of the machine.
The injury you prevent could
well be your own. Remember —
safety first.
Successful year
for local kennel
Mrs. Eileen Currie of Lucan's
Brialin Kennels is very pleasd
with the success of her Kershend
breed of dogs. These dogs are of
Dutch origin and have been used
as watch-dogs, particularly on
canal barges and gypsy camps as
well as in war-time.
Verbar Silver Smoke of Brialin
has recently won a championship,
and is father to a three months
old puppy, Brialin Kirsten, who
will be shown for London Market
Pet Shop on C.F.P.L. T.V.
Saturday morning at 9.30.
Lewis, Robert Anderson.
Welcome aboard, Comrades.
Saturday of this week,
cribbage players of branch 540
will journey to Glencoe to
participate in the Zone 45
competition. The winners of
which will advance to the District
playdowns. Good Luck,
Comrades and don't forget to
hurry back to 540 because when
you return it should be just about
time to sit down to dinner at the
Tuesday night sports club
smorgasbord and take part in the
Awards presentation and the
dance which follows. This would
appear to be a fun filled day,
Comrades. See you there.
Our Ladies Auxiliary bowling
team journeyed to Stratford last
Saturday to take part in the
Auxiliary Bowling. Sure wish I
could tell you how they made
out. Apparently they are keeping
the results to themselves.
Don't forget the Zone A5
Dinner Meeting this Thursday,
February 18 at Ilderton.
Remember it is the election
meeting. Try to get there,
Comrades.
I was most remiss in last
week's column not to have given
our good friend Don Hirtzel of
Centralia special mention for
supplying seven Scorpion snow
vehicles for our children' annual
snow vehicle party, Sunday
February 7. Sorry Don, a little
late but a belated 'Thank You'
anyway.
DATES TO REMEMBER
Feb. 18 Zone A5 dinner meeting.
Feb. 27 Mixed sports award night.
Mar. 2 Ladies Auxiliary meeting.
Mar. 6 Open dart tournament-
Delhi Legion.
Mar. 10 General meeting, and
