Doctor urges
cytology program
Dr. G. P. A. Evans, guest
speaker at the recent meeting of
Huron Unit of the Canadian
Cancer Society held in Griderich,
spoke on cigarette smoking
damage and sputum cytology.
Excerpts quoted from the
report "Smoking and Health
Now" recently released by the
Royal College of Physicians and
Surgeons, London, England,
show that many premature
deaths and crippling health states
are caused by smoking which has
reached an epidemic state.
Sputum cytology is • the
microscopic examination
small amount of lung material,
namely cells, expectorated in
sputum. Cigarette smokers are
urged to have this test
periodically as a tool in the
detection of cancer.
Dr. Evans recommended that
the Cancer Society lend their
support to a cytology program in
the county.
Mrs. Emily Rush, field
secretary of London, was present
and introduced her new assistant,
Donald Brandt, who has been
associated with the society. in
Toronto for a number of years.
Reports of branches and
particularly the Clinic in
Wingham pointed up the extent
of worthwhile work being carried
out by numerous volunteers.
New tool for
dental disorder
Electricity could become a
new tool for treating dental and
bone disorder, if current
experiments with animals prove
successful,
It is hoped that diseased and
injured bone can be restored and
crooked teeth straightened
through pressures generated by
electricity. Gum disease loosens
teeth as supporting bone is
sucked back. Toothless patients
are often difficult to fit with
dentures due to erosion of the
jawbone. At present this bone
loss cannot be restored.
It has been found that negative
electrodes can stimulate bone
production, while positive ones
diminish bone formation.
Pressure produces a type of
electricity in bone and these
experiments may explain how
pressure can reshape bone.
Bone specialists in the medical
and dental fields have been using
pressure for some time. An
orthodontist puts wires on teeth
to move them. He knows that the
force is transmitted to the
supporting bone to realign
crooked teeth,
The detection of 'electricity
produced in bone from forces
similar to those exerted by dental
appliances may pave the way for
bone alterations directly
stimulated and controlled by
electrical currents,

Have 2 doors kept you out
of a Volkswagen?
For some people, even the world's
most practical car just isn't practical.
Which meant that up to now, if you
wanted a car with four doors and you
wanted a Volkswagen too, you were out
of luck. (And so were we.l
But not ony more. Now there's a big ,
Volkswagen with four doors.
The new VW 411.
Because it's a big car, it can give
you everything a big car can:
A luxurious interior.
A big engine.
And scads of trunkspace.
But, because it's a Volkswagen, it can
also give you everything a big car can't:
Like mileage: around 27 mpg.
Volkswagen craftsmanship,
And dependability.
So when you get a 411 you get a big
car without getting any big car problems.

of materials pertaining to the
matter so that board members
can be as informed as possible on
all aspects of the problem.
The board decided February 8
that in the case of the former
South Huron District High
School student who claimed she
was misinformed concerning her
rights to obtain an art course
outside of Huron County, the
young woman should be given
fees to enroll immediately in the
Special Art Course at H. B. Beal
Secondary School, London; that
her request for compensation for
tuition fees, student loan and
other expenses to attend
Fanshawe College of Applied
Arts and Technology be denied.
In the "in camera" session of
the meeting when the press was
excluded, representatives of the
guidance department in Huron
County schools appeared before
the board to answer questions
and give their impressions of the
aims and objectives of the
guidance course.
No report from this meeting
was available except, in later open
meeting, it was suggested by Mrs.
J. W. Wallace, Goderich, that the
guidance program in the county
could probably be improved.
Attack poverty
Churches
Whether March Comes in like a
lion or a lamb, five Canadian
Churches are planning to take the
country by storm during the last
two weeks of Lent.
The five churches, Anglican,
Lutheran, Presbyterian, Roman
Catholic and United, have all
been busy since last summer
preparing campaign materials in
French and English and mailing
them to congregations across
Canada.
The central campaign theme
for 1971: "Development is
Hope." This is further
illustrated in fourposterson relief,
justice, education and change and
in an ecumenical brochure.
Background material and
program suggestions are also
contained in an eight-page,
tabloid size broadsheet.
This is the second year that the
churches have made a combined
attack upon world poverty and
disaster relief. In 19'70 they raised
over $3.7 million in emergency
aid and development assistance.
This year the planners hope for
an increased response.
A lot will depend upon
planning at the local level and
how enthusiastic clergy and laity
are about ecumenical action in
cities, towns and villages across
the country,
To quote from the brochure:
"Now, awakened both to the
human needs and to the dangers
of this tragic imbalance among
members of the human family,
the churches must give top
priority to assisting in massive
programs of development all over
the World.
"We need to tackle the
problems of poverty here in
Canada. We need to share in
