FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Space
and spice
Plans are being quickly formulated for the tenth
annual carnival presented by the Exeter Figure Skating
club.
The more than 130 boys and girls making up the
local club are working hard on their various routines
that will be included in the carnival slated for the Exeter
arena on Saturday, February 27.
This year's presentation will be entitled "Space
and Spice All on Ice." Included in the characters will be
candies, flowers, space men and robots to mention only
a few.
The first carnival was held in the spring of 1952
making this year's show the twentieth consecutive show
held at the local arena.
President Barb Dougherty told us this week that
the 1971 show should be bigger and better than ever
and a bit different in content.
The club's new teaching pro, Brad Loosley will be
taking part in three acts. He will be skating in a solo
number, appearing in a duet and will have another male
partner in a very interesting comedy routine.
Other members of the local club executive are
vice-president loois Brintnell, secretary-treasurer Mary
Holtzmann and directors, Dolores Fuller and Jack and
Flo Underwood.
The club will also be holding their annual dance
at the Exeter Legion Hall, Saturday, April 10 with the
Blue Tones supplying the music.
Obtaining fowl
A group of district sportsmen are banding
together to provide some additional waterfowl at
Morrison Dam.
Headed by Alvin Willert, the enthusiastic
sportsmen will be purchasing three pair of wild geese in
the near future to enhance the beauty of the dam area.
Two pair of Canada geese and one pair of blue
geese are being purchased from the Desjardine game
farm near Grand Bend. These birds are mated and are
expected to produce young this spring.
The birds that are expected to be acquired are
pinioned and will be unable to fly and leave the area. In
similar situations, young geese usually fly south in the
fall and a good majority return the following spring and
sometimes bring along a few visitors.
This way it is hoped the bird population would
grow appreciably over the next few years.
Willert told us this week that the Ausable River
Conservation Authority has given their approval to this
project.
The local recreation director said while several
persons had already donated some monies toward the
purchase of these geese other donations would be
accepted. The cost will be $150 and anyone wishing to
make a contribution should contact Willert, Reg
MacDonald or Dick Roelofson.
This sporting group are also planning to construct
feeding and nesting areas to make surroundings
attractive for visitors from the air.
Lots of room
A new seven-team British hockey league has
started play this year and one of the teams plays in what
we would consider a large arena.
The Glasgow Dynamos play their home games on
an ice surface that is 240 feet long and 100 feet wide.
This would certainly give a player with good stick
handling abilities a great edge.
The standing joke at this rink is that you can get a
hot dog and coffee during the time it takes to make an
end-to-end rush.
Expos on TV
An announcement last week by the Canadian
Broadcasting Company should be welcomed by baseball
fans in this area.
The CBC has completed an exclusive three-year
contract for television rights to Montreal Expo baseball
games.
The popular Expos will be seen in 18 games on
the English network with Hal Kelly and Don Drysdale
again doing the announcing.
H -P tourney here
The annual Huron-Perth Conference championship
wrestling tournament will be held Friday of this week at
South Huron District High School with eight schools
participating.
In only their third year of league competition the
South Huron wrestlers will be attempting to bring their
second consecutive championship to the local school.
The meet involving teams from Stratford Central,
St. Marys, Clinton, Goderich, Seaforth, Wingham,
Listowel and South Huron will get underway at eleven
o'clock in the morning in the new gym and run right
through the day.
Admission is free to all events and the general
public is more than welcome.
Three local wrestlers Gerard Charrette, Bill
Cameron and Bill Degroot will be attempting to retain
titles won last year.
While on high school sports, the South Huron girls
teams will be meeting Seaforth in volleyball action
Monday afternoon at the local school with the winners
moving into the Huron-Perth playoffs.
In basketball, the two SHDHS boys teams
complete the regular schedule this week. Stratford
Central were here yesterday, Wednesday, the locals travel
to St. Marys today and host Mitchell Tuesday to wind up
the season.
