Mr. and Mrs. Harold Fahner
have returned from a trip to
Winnipeg where they visited
Americas
to be studied
An introduCtion to the study
of "The Americas" was given by
Mrs. Beth Batten at the first
meeting in 1971 of Exeter UCW
Unit 3, Monday evening. She
gave a brief look at education in
Brazil ending with a plea for all
to live up to the slogan "Live
Love."
The new leader of the unit
Mrs. Ada Dinney challenged the
members to make 1971 a
worthwhile year in fellowship,
study and prayer.
Jean Love aided by Olive
Harvey, Edith Love, Ethel Selby
and Helen Westcott led the
worship on "Fellowship."
with Mr. and Mrs. Steve Brierley
and were present at Mrs.
Brierley's graduation. She
received her degree as a
registered dietitian in a
ceremony at Misericordia
Hospital.
It was cold in Winnipeg with
a sometimes violent wind that
seemed especially effective on
Portage Avenue. Earlier the
Brierleys had seen a woman with
a small child swept off her feet
by the gale. The child rolled into
the path of a car which
fortunately passed over its body
without harming it.
UCW
The January meeting of Zion
UCW was held Thursday
afternoon in the Sunday School
rooms. Mrs. Gordon Finkbeiner
was in charge of the program
and was assisted by Mrs. Nelson
Lamp ort, Mrs. Lorne Hodge and
Mrs. Earl Neil. Mrs. Emmery
Fahrner accompanied the singing
and played a piano solo.
The program theme "The
Missionary to
speak on Peru
A missionary on furlough
from Peru will be speaking at
Emmanuel Baptist church in
Exeter, Sunday.
Rev. Lee Shiel will be
speaking at the 11 a.m. and 7:30
p.m. services and has first hand
information on the recent
earthquake in that country.
New Year" was developed by
the guest speaker Rev. Armin
Schlenker. Speaking on "Seek ye
first the kingdom of God and
His righteousness" he stated that
His righteousness meant a right
relationship with God, with man
and with one's environment.

Ella Morlock, vice-president. The
treasurer and the Good Cheer
convener, Mrs. Ross Krueger and
Mrs. Bob Reida reported work
accomplished in 1970, Mrs. Ed.
Hendrick, convener of supply,
reported the packing of a box of
knitted bandages and cotton
material for a mission in West
Africa, and requested the
collection of used cotton to
make bandages for the
Mennonite Centre.
Mrs. Cliff Russell was
appointed representative to the
Official Board.
CHURCH SERVICE
Sunday, the sacrament of
communion was observed at
Zion United Church. The
minister Rev. Douglas Warren
based his sermon on the words
"It pleased the Father that in
Christ should all fulness dwell."

Mrs. Emmery Fahrner was
admitted Monday to South
Huron Hospital.
Mrs. Harry Crocker and son
of Lambeth were with Mr. &
Mrs. Alf Tilley Sunday and took
them to Dashwood to visit Mr. &
Mrs. George Crocker.
Michael Finkbeiner, son of
Mr. & Mrs. Reg Finkbeiner, is a
patient at the Children's
Hospital, London.

pretty easy on each other, taking
the view, "If you don't scratch
any skin off my back I'll be gentle
with you, too."
However, I was determined
that my final assignment would
be a masterpiece. Written and
rewritten, polished and
repolished I knew it was about as
good as a piece of writing could
be.
The teacher's remarks
flabbergasted me, "An excellent
rough draft," he said, "now
Polish It,"
"Polish it," I reproached him,
"How in the world could I polish
it any more?"
"Well, I thought .. . " he
ventured to say,
"Young man", I interrupted
him "are you a writer?"
"Why, yes," he answered.
"What' have you had
published?" I asked.
"Well, I had a couple of short
poems printed in a university
magazine lately," he said
proudly.
"But, have you," I demanded,
"had a column printed every
week for over a year in a first rate
weekly newspaper? Have you
ever written up council and
nominations meetings, taken
notes at the ladies' auxiliary or

Rev. Glen Wright was the
guest speaker at the meeting of
Exeter UCW Unit 1, Thursday
afternoon, He told of his
experiences during four years
spent in Newfoundland when he
had four churches under his
pastoral charge.
His talk was accompanied by
the showing of slides of his
churches and interesting scenes
of the country at different
seasons of the year.
Mrs, B. W. Tuckey was in
charge of the program and was
assisted in the devotional by
Mrs. W. C. Allison.
The leader Mrs. Wellington
Brock conducted the business
when annual reports were given
by the various secretaries.
Hold dance
at H uronview
With the holiday season over
the residents' programs are back
on schedule starting the week
with a dance on Monday
afternoon, when several of the
residents took part in the
hokey-pokey, square dance
practice, along with the regular
dances.
Mrs. Jim Barrie won ladies'
high at the progressive euchre on
Wednesday afternoon with nine
tables playing. Men's high was
won by Albert Nicholson,
consolation prize winners were
Mrs. Lula Jones and Jim Barrie.
The residents were entertained
on Thursday Family night by a
Rhythm band from Goderich
Psychiatric Hospital led by
Gordon Harrison of Goderich on
the piano.
The old time dance club of
Clinton along with their orchestra
Mrs. Ross Broadfoot, Nelson
Howe, Andy Orr with Gordon
Papple calling provided some old
time music and dancing for the
residents Friday evening.

At the meeting of the
Women's Auxiliary to South
Huron Hospital, Tuesday
afternoon Mrs. Larry Taylor
reported that paper back books
had been added to the facilities
of the travelling cart and were
proving very popular. These are
on loan and many more could be
used.
The Huron County Health
Unit was granted permission for
the use of the Auxiliary room
and kitchen for its upcoming
clinics. Mrs. Carfrey Cann
reported 50 hospital visits being
made in December.
The spring rummage sale dates
were announced for April 16
and 17.
At the February social
meeting guest speaker will be
William Hart of Exeter who will
discuss hobbies and why they
are important especially to
senior citizens. He will display
some of his own hobbies.

Brierley, the former Sheila A.
Fahner, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Fahner, Crediton,
has graduated as a registered
dietitian at Misercordia General
Hospital, Winnipeg.
Mr. Rick Haveling left Sunday
for his duties in Fort Frances
after spending the holidays with
his mother, Mrs. William Haigh,
William St., Exeter,
Douglas Triebner is a patient
in Westminster Hospital,
London.
Mr. & Mrs. William J.
Thomson visited with Mr. & Mrs.
J. A. Christie in Guelph over the
weekend. Sunday they attended
