the next couple of weekends should be very
interesting and exciting for participating and spectator
sports,
Starting this Friday afternoon, the annual Winter
Carnival is being held at South Huron District High
School. The event gets underway at 2:30 with the always
popular broomball game between the students and
to aching staff.
Over the years this game has been very interesting.
This may be the only opportunity during the school term
when a student has any chance of gaining the upper hand
in a battle with staff members.
We well remember last year's game when the arena
was filled with students and both sides used tactics that
could be called slightly unethical in an attempt to get
ahead on the scoreboard.
If we remember correctly there were several
versions of the final score. We feel South Huron in recent
years has had an excellent relationship between staff and
students and the broomball game is an indication of the
good spirit prevailing.
Many of the events that proved popular last year
will be repeated and a few games are being added. A
marathon basketball game to last at least 24 hours is on
tap. Last year's game provided scores of well over one
thousand points by both clubs.
Last year, some students actually fell asleep while
sitting in the stands watching the game or waiting for their
turn to participate.
Student council president Burton Moon and his
staff have come up with a possible cure for sleepiness. A
series of five horror movies are being presented right
through the night.
A dance is also being planned for the old gym
Friday night with music supplied by the White Rabbit
while basketball is played in the new gymtorium.
Saturday's program will again include the popular
snow shoe and snowmobile races along with judging of the
many snow sculptures that are expected to be erected if
the weatherman continues his fine winterish efforts.
While talking about the broomball game both
teams have not been backward in coming forward in
making predictions as to the outcome of the game.
A spokesman for the grade 13 team said, "we don't
see any problem in beating the teachers. It should be no
contest. The score could be 100-1.
When told of this remark by the opposition J. L.
"Punch" Wooden, general manager and playing coach of
the staff team said, "In the 15 years the game has been
played I have never known the teachers to lose a game.
This year should be no exception."
Wooden went on to say, "Our team is now
observing a strict training schedule and we should be in
excellent shape."
The winner of the grudge battle will win the Andy
Dixon Memorial trophy.
Immediately after the broomball game, the scene
switches back to the school with two basketball games
and a wrestling meet between South Huron and Listowel.
Breakfast will be served at the school Saturday
morning starting about 8:30 with most school buses
arriving at ten o'clock with students. Snowmobile and
toboggan races will round out the morning program.
One of the afternoon features will be a powder puff
football game with two girls' teams from the school
participating. Members of the boys grid clubs will handle
the coaching duties.
Student president Burton Moon is attempting to
obtain an eight-foot balloon to be used in a proposed mass
soccer game. Later Saturday afternoon, hungry students
will have a chance to fill their appetites during the annual
pancake eating contest.
Saturday night at 7:30 the movie Bonnie and Clyde
will be shown and there is a possibility this will be
repeated Sunday evening.
Last year we stayed at the school most of the time
throughout the 24-hour marathon and expect to do a
repeat performance this year and hope to be able to stay
awake without the help of the horror flickers.
Parents are more than welcome to drop in at
anytime to enjoy a winter weekend with the students and
staff.
Invasion, beware
The entire town of Exeter will be invaded
Saturday. Before anyone is alarmed the invaders are
friendly. They are members of all-star teams of the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association.
The youngsters will be selling buttons saying, "I am
an Exeter hockey booster." The buttons sell for one
dollar and entitle the wearer admission to the annual
Minor Hockey Day scheduled for Saturday, January 30.
About eleven hours of hockey action is available
for the small fee of one dollar and spectators may come
and go as they wish anytime during the afternoon and
evening.
We will have more on the schedule for the day next
week. Let's have the welcome mat out for the youngsters
when they arrive with their buttons, Saturday.
These didn't get away
