Retired bank manager,
Charlie Smith, is still working at
figures, and he's pretty good at
balancing, too.
Only now, it's not the kind
you find in the columns of bank
ledgers, but the intricate figure
three and eight that figure skaters
try to perfect on the ice.
Mr. Smith, who retired as
manager of the Bank of Montreal
last year, says he always had a yen
to do figure skating, and nova, he
has the time and the instructor to
teach him the fine points at the
Exeter Figure Skating Club.
A good skater since his youth,
when his father taught him the
basics on skating ponds around his
home town of Waterford, Charlie
took some lessons in trick skating
when he was about 15. Later,
when employed as a school
teacher in Toronto, he joined the
Granite Club skating club where
he "learned to really love the
grace and thrill of figure skating."
After a year of teaching he
went on temporary summer staff
at the bank, decided this was the
career for him, and continued in
this field until a few months ago.
"I always was good at figures."
Now, that he's switched from
adding figures to skating figures
he can be found at the arena with
the intermediate class every
Tuesday afternoon from four to
six, and his instructor, Brad
Loosley, of Woodstock, says, "He

cuts a pretty mean edge!"
Mondays, Charlie is also at the
arena helping with the beginners.
He laces up umpteen dozen
skates, loosens too-tight laces,
picks up youngsters when they
fall, and helps out in many ways,
When a class is finished he
often moves with the little people
to the other end of the rink to put
them through their practising
before pack up until the
following week.
Mr. Smith says he's sorry there
aren't more boys in the classes.
"Boys seem to think figure
skating is sissified, but it isn't.
Every hockey player should take
lessons to learn balance."
He points out there would be
far less accidents in hockey if
"the lads could really skate."
Having been a long time hockey
player, himself, Charlie should
know what he's talking about.
He confesses he gets a real
bang out of the kiddies and
derives as much pleasure from
helping them as he does from his
own lessons. "It's about a 50.50
deal," he says.
His philosophy is that unless
you help somebody you die.
"When I was in the bank I felt I
was a useful part of society, and I
didn't want that to stop when I
retired."
Although he says he didn't
look forward to retirement, and is
