One of the oldest trainers of harness horses in Canada can be seen at the track at Exeter Community Park almost every morning. Several residents of Pryde Boulevard say they can set their watches by Charlie Godbolt when he leaves for the track every morning at the same time from Bob Pooley's farm at the easterly edge of Exeter. Now eighty-two years of age, Godbolt who has been connected with the horse game all his life, didn't drive a horse in a race until he was sixty-three. The popular horseman says, "The first horse I ever drove at a track came home the winner. That was Banner Grattan at Goderich on Labour Day, 1951., We won ten dollars for going the fastest heat." The best horse he ever owned was Dustabout, now a 13-year-old mare and the mother of the mare he is now training for Bob Pooley. Dusty's Folly by Willy's Folly out of Dustabout made its first career racing start at Goderich last night, Wednesday. Pooley purchased Godbolt's three horse string on June 9, 1969. The other Pooley owned horse is a yearling named Dusty's Camp whose sire is Camp Hanover, the same father as Camper, the good young trotter trained by Bill Habkirk of Tillsonburg. Talking about Dustabout, Godbolt said, "we first raced her when she was three years of age and In her racing career she won 27 times out of 38 starts, placed second on seven occasions and was out of the money only once. Tom Yearley and Marshall Moore shared the driving duties. AN ITALIAN restaurateur had a customer the other night who told him, "Your veal parmesan is better than any I had in Italy on my vacation." Said the host, modestly enough, "Of course it is. Over there they use domestic cheese, and here we use imported." Godbolt has a reverse psychology to most race owners and drivers. "I always go to the track with the idea we, are going to lose. I have been told I should have faith, but faith doesn't win races, it's the horse," said the veteran trainer.
