Fac ts N' Fancies
By Gwyn
When I saw a smug, satisfied
look come over my husband's
face as he read a recent article
about Equal Rights I knew it was
time to step into the breach.
Snatching the magazine from
his hands I threw it in the fire,
"Listen," I informed him
coldly, "don't get any ideas that
things are about to change around
here just because a lot of silly
women across the country are
making fools 01 themselves.
"For example, don't think for
a moment that you can stay in
bed another hour each day while I
go off to work early.
"Or, worse still, don't get the
idea I'm going to slug it out at the
office to bring home the bacon
while you stay home all day
having coffee parties with the rest
of the boys on the street, curling
up with a good book, taking an all
day shopping trip to the city or
just fiddling around doing
whatever you please.
"There's no chance."
Still fuming, I continued,
"And don't get any fancy ideas
we're going to start using my
money to buy groceries while you
save yours for those extra little
doodads you might want.
"Not on your life.
"Further more, I haven't any
notion in the world of roofing the
house, cleaning out the furnace or
hauling out the storm windows.
"And, even if women are
proved to be better soldiers than
men don't count on me to take up
the glorious task of fighting all
future wars.
"No way!"
He tried to interject,
"According to the new laws . ."
"New laws, indeed," I snorted,
"I know the old laws and they're
good enough for me.
"For instance, I know you are
responsible for all my debts, but I
don't have to worry a hoot about
yours.
The laws also states that I can
sell my property without any
reference to you while you must
cajole me to sign off my dowery
rights before you get rid of any of
yours.
"The law is firm that you must
give me adequate food, shelter
and clothing, and that's the way it
should be and that's the way it's
going to stay around here. "And,
you'd better believe it. "For, if
you refuse to support me I can
request a garnishee against your
wages, but just you try to do that
to me and see where it gets you.
"Just try!
"In case of divorce there's no
way you can force alimony or
child support out of me, but
should this event occur you'd
better be prepared to pay through
the nose.
"Let's 5et this thing straight
once and for all, THERE'LL BE
NO EQUAL RIGHTS AROUND
HERE. Everything is going to
remain as is!"
rub your aching muscles, warm
your feet, pat your cheek, and
say, 'you're absolutely right,
dear,' when everybody else
disagrees with you."
Snuggling up to him I laid my
head on his shoulder.
"You really wouldn't want
things to change, now, would
your I queried gently. "You're
absolutely right, dear," he
answered,

one is supposed to do when one
retires just didn't appeal," said
Margie. "There was no way we
could suddenly stop cooking for
all those people and do nothing.
We had to find something to do to
taper off."
Since their homemade pies
had always been a bit at the hotel,
the Johnsons struck on the idea
of opening a Pie Shop in their
retirement on Lake Huron.
"And;, it's just a picnic",
Margie said happily as she
removed a giant tray of mouth
watering butter tarts from the
oven.
A picnic?
Not to the ordinary person.
Getting up at 5:30 every
morning, the Johnsons turn out
7 5 pies .. . more on the
weekends . . and dozens of
butter tarts. They are baked by
10 a.m. and the shop opens to
customers at 11 a.m.
In a large room in their new
house which could be reconverted
back to a recreation room, they
have set up their kitchen and
shop.
A stainless steel, modern oven
bakes 40 pies in 40 minutes and
holds several immense trays of
tarts.
Mrs. Johnson was asked,
"After the Pie Shop, what?"
"Well," she answered, "we are
going to Florida for the winter
and we'll really take it easy down
there,"
One wonders.
Could bethey'll find there's a
real need for a couple of good pie
makers in Florida, too!
"We have to learn how to
retire," stated Mrs. Margie
Johnson, as she briskly boxed
pies in the Ross & Margie Pie
Shop, situated on the Bluewater
Highway south of St. Joseph's.
Mr. & Mrs. Ross Johnson
operated the Dominion Hotel for
30 years before they sold it early
this summer. The dining room of
the Johnson hotel, which had
been in the family for three
generations, built up a reputation
for delectable home-cooked
meals that brought people from
far and near and kept them
coming back.
Preparing thousands of
dinners each year was the usual
for the Johnsons and last
Mother's Day alone, they served
500 happy customers.
This summer Margie and Ross
decided it was time to retire.
"But, 1 didn't know what to
do with myself. Knitting and
sewing and all the other things
