CLOSED FOR HOLIDAYS Sept. 7 to 24 DOUG WEIMAR Barber Shop Main St. Exeter One often hears the saying "the ball game isn't over until the last man is out". Well, we are quite sure the members of the Dashwood Tigers Intermediate baseball club believe this very sincerely, The Tigers weren't actually down to the last out but they were within three outs of gaining an OBA playoff win over Wilkesport on the Dashwood diamond Wednesday night when the roof literally fell in, This is very hard to believe but Wilkesport scored eighteen runs to wipe out a 12-6 Dashwood margin in the top of the ninth and won the game 24-12. Seeing is believing. We saw it and are still not sure if it was a dream. No, it wasn't a dream. It had to be a nightmare. One of the most odd facts of the crazy game was that the same Wilkesport player made all three outs in the ninth inning. This has to be a world record and fair game for Believe It Or Not Sports Oddities. After doing a lot of thinking about this oddball game we did some researching and came up with a lot of odd baseball happenings that we think are worth passing on. One of the few Canadian pitchers in big league baseball, Dick Fowler of Hamilton, pitched a no-hit-no-run game in his first big league start for the Philadelphia Athletics. The famous Lefty Gomez of the Yankees once struck out 22 opposing batters in a nine inning game and lost. But( in April of 1931, Miss Jackie Mitchell, the first woman to sign a professional baseball contract struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in succession in an exhibition contest. Louis "Buck" Newsom pitching in both games of a doubleheader for the St. Louis Browns walked the first four men in the first game and came back in the second game to strike out the same four players. Ed Delahanty was the only player to lead both the National and American leagues in batting. He hit .408 for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1899 and .376 for the Washington Senators in 1902. Neal Ball of Cleveland of the American league made an unassisted triple play and hit a home run in the same inning on July 19, 1909. Harry Hulen of Minneapolis in a game in 1894 came to bat six times, walked six times and scored six runs. The Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast league completed double plays in six consecutive innings on September 25, 1934. The only major league game in which nobody got a hit in nine innings was played on May 2, 1917. Fred Toney was pitching for the Reds and Jimmy Vaughan for the Cubs. In the top of the tenth, Toney "fell apart" and was touched for two hits and a run. Russ Meyer, a former Phillie hurler while pitching for Superior in the Northern league in 1942 struck out six men in one inning. The catcher dropped three third strike pitches. Elmer Smith of the Cleveland Indians made seven consecutive extra base hits totalling 22 bases — four homers and three doubles. Chuck Dyke pitching in an American Legion league game in Cleveland fanned 25 batters in one game and made the other two outs on throws to the first baseman. Tony Freitas pitching for Sacramento, California struck out a batter and caught the third° strike himself. The ball hit the catcher's chest protector and bounced right to the pitcher. Nick Altrock, famous for his clowning antics at big league ball games in later years once won a game for the Chicago White Sox without pitching a single ball. Altrock came into the game in the first half of the ninth with the score tied, two out and the bases loaded. On the first play he picked the runner off first and his team went on to win their half of the ninth. The famous Babe Herman of the old Brooklyn Dodgers doubled with the bases loaded and a double play resulted. Herman over-ran the two base runners ahead of him. Tom Hughes pitched no-hit-no-run games in both the National and American leagues, for New York against Cleveland in 1910 and for Boston against Pittsburgh in 1916. Joe F. Moore pitching for Philadelphia on April 4, 1904 pitched only 38 balls. He retired the first 18 men on 19 pitches. Burleigh Grimes of Brooklyn Dodger fame hit into two double plays and a triple play in three successive trips to the plate. No one ever had to tell the great Christy Mathewson to exercise pitching control. During the 1918 season, the Giant's immortal hurled 68 consecutive innings without walking a batter. For 12 seasons in a row, Matty won 20 or more games, for three straight seasons he won 20 or more and in the 1905 World Series he pitched three shut-outs. "Old floss" Radbourne of Providence pitched and won nine games in ten days in 1884. Sam Chapman of' the Philadelphia Athletics hit two home runs in two days in the same game. He hit the first homer before midnight and the second after midnight on July 30-31, 1941. James Hinson of Monroe, North Carolina made 16 hits in succession as a pinch hitter in 1923. Billy Herman, who played second base for the Chicago Cubs for many years playing in his first year in the majors and in his first World Series was first man up in the first inning of the first game, scored the first hit and first run. He also made the last hit and the last run in the last inning of the last game, In 1923, Herb Pruett pitching for St, Louis struck out Babe Ruth, 13 out of 15 trips to the plate. Greys ahead in playoff The Exeter Greys scored two consecutive wins over Mitchell during the past week to take a three games to one lead in their best-of-seven Huron Ladies softball league "B" final, The Greys trounced the Mitchell girls 25.12 in the Perth County town, Thursday night and came back with an 8-3 decision on the Exeter diamond Tuesday. The fifth game of the series is scheduled for the Mitchell park, Tuesday night of next week. Homer helps Lynne Farquhar homered with Patti Robinson on base in the second inning to put the Greys out in front after Mitchell scored a single run in the first inning. The Greys came up with four hits and the same number of runs in the fourth to take a comfortable lead. Doubles by Joan Campbell and Lynne Farquhar and singles by Patti Robinson and Glenda Fisher sparked the rally. In the seventh, Joan Campbell tripled and came home on Sheila Willerts' double. The final Grey runs were scored in the eighth by Marlene Parsons and Patti Robinson. Marlene Parsons went the distance to gain the Exeter pitching win, allowing the Mitchell girls to score single runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings. take the deciding game of a hest-of-three series, Crediton now takes on Walsingham with the first game slated for Walsingham Saturday afternoon at four o'clock. The second game will be back in Crediton Labour Day afternoon. A five run rally in the second inning and another three mu spurt in the next inning sent the Crediton boys on their way to victory. Elmgrove scored two runs in the first inning on one hit, a walk and a Crediton error before the home club started to go. With the first two Crediton batters retired in the bottom of the second inning the Crediton bats went to work. Rodger Finkbeiner kept the inning alive with a double and Rick Bowers followed with a booming triple. Before the inning was over Doug Fairbairn and Paul Robinson singled and Peter Wuerth connected for a three-bagger The home team used the reverse pattern in the third inning rally scoring two runs before any outs were registered' and Kevin Bestard tripled to complete the Crediton scoring for the afternoon. Catcher Peter Wuerth was the WIN TITLE — The Huron Park Tyke baseball team recently won the WOAA "D" title and are now engaged in OBA championship play with Poplar Hill. At the Huron Park diamond, Monday night, the Dufferin boys edged the Legion 7-5 in the first game of a best-of-five series. The second contest goes at Exeter Community park tonight, Thursday at eight o'clock with the third back at Huron Park, Monday. A four runs Dufferin spurt in the bottom of the third inning proved to be the deciding factor in a close contest. Two walks and three base hits allowed the Leafs to score their first four runs of the game. Brintnell and Colin Brewer drew the free tickets to first while Bob Conrad rapped out a triple and Don Boudreau and Bob Pinter nabbed singles. The Legion hit the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the fourth when Jim Hewitt walked and scored on Dean McKnight's single. The Leafs were right back in their half of the same frame to score twice. Lloyd Mathers and Brintnell walked and rode home on Colin's triple. The hotelmen finished off their night's scoring with a single marker in the fifth when Dennis Carey walked and completed the base cycle without the aid of a hit. The Legion club struck back quickly in the sixth when Earl Wagner singled, Jim Hewitt tripled and Dean McKnight LIJI1111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111I11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111.: Start early The Greys wasted little time in taking the lead in Thursdays game as they scored nineteen runs in the first four innings. Joan Campbell blasted a round tripper in the second and repeated the trick four innings later. Kathy Wells homered in the third and Ann Jorgensen in the sixth frame. Exeter Fair Raceway LICENCED chipped in with his second one-bagger of the night to score two runs. Jim Finnen walked to lead off the Legion seventh and scored on Ron Bogart's long home run blast that completed the game scoring. Bob Robinson was the winning pitcher for the Leafs chalking up eight strike-outs while allowing five base hits. Don Pickering, the losing pitcher allowed the same number of hits as his mound opponent and fanned a total of twelve. The final round of the "B" division in the Exeter and district Rec softball league will get underway tonight Thursday at Exeter Community park with the Kinsmen meeting the Junior Hawks. The Hawks edged the Crediton Tigers 5-4 in the fifth and deciding game Monday night, but the final outcome was in doubt until a league meeting was held Tuesday night. The Crediton club filed a protest after Monday's loss regarding the eligibility of several players on the Hawks club. The Crediton team claimed three players, Jack Fuller, Terry Bourne and manager Bob Baynham had not played the necessary six games to make them eligible for the playoffs. The meeting that included all team representatives decided that Fuller would not be eligible for further playoff action. At the same time Crediton allowed the series to stand and the Hawks will go on to meet the Kinsmen Crediton walloped the Hawks 26-10 Thursday night to force the STAG Many golfers in weekly play A total of 31 golfers participated in the weekly men's nite play at the Ausable golf course, Tuesday night. The Crediton run total was raised to three in the second when Grasdahl's triple scored Jim Finkbeiner and Brian Hodgins. In the Hawks third inning, Bill Farquhar and Barry Baynham were safe on errors and scored on Greg Revington's single. The final Crediton run came in the fifth on singles by Jim Pfaff and Bob Parsons. Barry Baynham homered for the Hawks in the top of the fifth to cut the Crediton lead to 4-3. BIG INNINGS The Tigers went on a scoring spree in three innings as they swamped the Hawks 26.10, Thursday night. Seven run spurts in the second and third innings and a ten run outburst in the sixth were more than enough to get the victory for Crediton. Three home runs helped the Crediton cause immensely. Pitcher Gord Slaght, Ron - Grasdahl and Brian Hodgins socked a home run in addition to picking up a single each. Bob Parsons and Joe Regier each picked up three singles for the winners while Murray Hodge bashed out a pair of one-base blows. Jim Pfaff gained the distinction of getting a walk in each of his five appeOrances at the plate. The first three hitters in the lineup and the ninth man were the only Hawks to get base hits. Leadoff man Larry Haugh had two singles, Bill Farquhar followed with three singles and Barry Baynham clouted a home run. At the bottom of the batting order Pete Revington collected a triple. REC LEAGUE PLAYOFFS "A" FINAL Dashwood midgets ousted in OBA play The Dashwood midgets have been eliminated by Merlin in two straight games in Ontario Baseball Association midget "D" play downs. Merlin edged the Dashwood youngsters 3-1 on the Dashwood diamond Sunday afternoon in an extremely well played game. Merlin took the opener by a score of 11-9 on their home grounds a week earlier. With two out in the Dashwood third, Peter Kleinstiver moved up on Gary Hartman's single and scored on a similar hit from the bat of John Hayter. While failing to score any further runs the Dashwood boys threatened on several occasions. They had the bases loaded in the sixth with no one out and failed to score and had runners on second and third in the seventh without scoring. John Hayter and Gary Hartman each collected two singles to lead the Dashwood hitters. Other singles went to Kevin Bestard, Peter Kleinstiver, Jim Guenther and Randy Becker. Brian testard went the distance on the mound for Dashwood and gave up only four hits while gaining ten strikeouts. Conlan called him back saying the count was three and one, The manager ran up to Conlan. 4'Which one of those four pitches did you calla strike?" he demanded.
