Leaders for the homemaking club for Staffa No. 1 are Mrs. Spencer Jeffery and Mrs. Bill Butson; Staffa No. 2, Mrs. John Wallace and Mrs. Charles Douglas; Staffa No. 3, Mrs. Les Waddell and Mrs. Ross Balfour. 4-H NO. 1 CLUB Staffa No. 1 4-H girls held the first meeting of the homemaking club "Working with wool" at the home of their leader Mrs. Spencer Jeffery, Monday evening. The meeting was opened with the 4-H Pledge followed by the election of officers. The girls decided to call their club the "Staffa Woolies". The leaders discussed the qualities of wool and explained to the girls how to distinguish between the different kinds of wool, namely reprocessed, reused and virgin wool. The officers elected were: president, Mary Jane Templeman; vice-president, Dianne Miller; secretary, Joanne Ross; ass't. secretary, Ruth Jeffery; press reporter, Elizabeth Templeman; telephone girls, Teresa Miller and Linda Miller; record book covers, Rae Butson and Eleanor Butson; Achievement Day committee, Eleanor Butson and Judy Jeffery. Mrs. Elizabeth Riley and Mrs. Mary Taylor returned Saturday from a five week's vacation in Vancouver, B.C. and other places of interest, They called at Red Lake, Ontario, visiting with Mrs. Riley's brother and sister-in-law, Mr, & Mrs. William Taylor. Mr. Taylor is in poor health. Sim Roobol received a cablegram from Holland Saturday morning informing him of the sudden death of his father, Jacob Roobol of Oud-Beyerland, Holland. Mr. Roobol, 93 years of age, died Saturday morning. Although he was blind for over 20 years he had been in good health. Mr. Roobol visited his father two years ago. Carl Payne spent a few days in Victoria Hospital, London last week where he underwent eye surgery. Mr. & Mrs, Hank VanDyke returned to Holland by jet from Kennedy Airport this Thursday, after a three month's visit in Canada with Mr. & Mrs. Sim Roobol and other relatives. Mrs. Bill Knights of Blenheim, visited with Mr. & Mrs. Harry Snell. Stewart and Jane Knights returned home with her. Mrs. Henrietta Keyes, Mr. & Mrs. George Keyes of Toronto were recent visitors with Mr. & Airs, Harold Parker and Patsy. Ann Mickle who has spent the summer months in London is visiting for a week at the home of her parents Mr. & Mrs. E. L. Mickle, prior to taking up residence in Toronto where she will be teaching this term. Mr. & Mrs. Don Joynt and Pat, returned home after holidaying at their summer home on NEW FIRE HALL IN HENSALL is well underway. Don Oke, Zurich is doing the renovations that will make a hall large enough to house the new fire truck purchased this Summer for the village. Mrs. Cameron Vivian reported on the bus trip to Brantford in September and Mrs. Ed. Chappel gave a demonstration on nylon net hair caps and other novelties. The meeting closed with a sale of vegetables and lunch served by the hostesses, Mrs. Penelope Fell, Miss Vera Hambley and Mrs. Verna Brooks. PERSONALS Karen Miller entertained several of her friends Saturday on her ninth birthday. It constitutes a sort of bird-control pill — or, if you prefer, Planned Pigeonhood. 235-0120 EXETER, By MISS ELLA MORLOCK CR EDITON Mr. and Mrs. Walter Fydenchuk, Paul, Wally and Anne have returned from a month's car-trailer trip to the Maritimes. The outward journey was through the United States, the return by way of Quebec and Ontario. They visited places of historical interest such as Louisburg, the Acadian country at Grand Pre and Ottawa. The last site they toured in Ontario was Algonquin Park. MOOSONEE HOLIDAY Last week Mr. and Mrs. Ross Krueger drove to Cochrane, then boarded the excursion train for Moosonee. There were 450 people in the party, many of them Americans who had left their cars in Toronto and travelled northward by train. One of the group was a construction worker who had gone to Moosonee in 1926 and was returning after an absence of twenty-four years. He marvelled at the new buildings and roads and at the changes• which had occurred. In Moosonee the tourists visited the horticultural society, the museum, the Anglican church. They proceeded by boat to Moose Factory to view the Indian hospital and homes. Indians offered beads, moccasins and gloves for sale. Indian children sold shells and stones. The waters of the streams and lakes and even those of James Bay are coffee coloured, stained by the roots of the spruce and tamarack trees. Crediton tourists back from interesting trips Hydro was guest speaker at the August meeting of the Staffa Women's Institute held in the township hall Wednesday evening, Mrs. George Vivian presided and opened with the Institute Ode and Mary Stewart Collect. She introduced the guest speaker who showed slides and gave an interesting commentary on the Portable Appliance Parade. Miss Boylco was thanked by Mrs. Lloyd Miller. There were 19 members and four visitors present and the roll call was answered by Hints from the Green Thumb to the Greenhorn. An interesting paper on the motto, The Wheels of Industry are the Gears of the Nation, was given by Mrs. Lloyd Miller. A report of the District executive meeting was given by Mrs. Carter Kerslake and members were reminded of the county rally which will be held in Atwood in October. Readings were given by Miss Olive Speare and Mrs. Garnet Taylor. Miss Ruth Jeffery delighted everyone with an accordion instrumental and Mrs. Charles Douglas conducted a contest on weeds with Mrs. Carter Kerslake the best educated member on the subject. The president Mrs. Ed. Chappel presided for the business. A letter was read from the Institute's adopted child. Manitoulin Island. Mrs. Percy Bartlett, of Thamesford, Mr, & Mrs. Stewart Bartlett, of Belmont, spent Sunday with Stewart McQueen and Mr. & Mrs. Harry Snell. Ann Plantanga has returned after a month's vacation with relatives and friends at Grongingen, Holland. She took the trip by jet. Ray McKenzie of Vancouver, B.C., is visiting in Hensall with relatives and, renewing acquaintances. Troyann Bell has returned home from St. Thomas where she has attended Summer Figure Skating School this past eight weeks. Test Day was held last weekend. Troyann was successful in passing two Silver Dances and received the "Silver Medal" for Free Skating Solo. At the Hensall Women's Institute meeting, next Wednesday the guest speaker will be Brother Bob Mittelholtz of Zurich, speaking on his work in India. Visitors are welcome. Following union services for July and August regular services will resume in Hensall United Church this Sunday at 11 a.m. when Rev. Harold F. Currie will occupy his own pulpit. Mrs. William Kyle is a patient in Victoria Hospital, London. Mrs. Alma Hess was a weekend guest with Mr. & Mrs. Edgar Smith and Mrs. Mabel Jarrott in Guelph. Mr. & Mrs. John Soldan,Mr. & Mrs. Patrick Soldan and Tracy, of Huron Park, spent the weekend with Dr. & Mrs. J. A. Spellman, Kitchener, and Mr. & Mrs. C. A. Heppler, Waterloo. Jarvis conducted the service in Carmel Presbyterian Church Sunday, the topic of the sermon was entitled No Tripping. Mrs. Malcolm Dougall again led the choir. Carmel services next Sunday and until the end of October will be at 10:15 and Hensall United Church and Chiselhurst will resume regular hours next Sunday.
