The Exeter Times-Advocate, 1970-08-27, Page 6Page 6 Times-Advocate, August 27, 1970 FOR A4.L ,POPP, SPORTS By Ross Haugh Playoff time Playoff time has again rolled around in most baseball and softball circles in the district. The Dashwood Tigers are again on the playoff trail and are looking for a third straight Ontario title, If they accomplish this feat again this year they will have to do it the hard way, quite similar to their playoff pattern of the last couple of years. The Tigers dropped the first game of a best-of-three series in Wilkesport Sunday afternoon by a score of 4-2 and were at home last night, Wednesday in the second game. Dashwood won the toss and if a third game is necessary it will be played in Dashwood sometime on the weekend. In minor baseball ranks, the Crediton bantams and Dashwood midgets are still in the hunt for provincial honors. The Crediton youngsters winners of the Western Ontario Athletic Association "D" championship are currently deadlocked at a game a piece with Elmgrove in the OBA semi-finals. • The third and deciding game will be played in Crediton Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. A lot of credit should go to Jim Finkbeiner, Bob Bushfield and Lorne Preszcator in looking after this good bunch of ball players this year and guiding them down the playoff trek. The Dashwood midgets are also engaged in an OBA playoff round with Merlin and despite a loss in the first game still have a good chance of advancing. After losing 11-9 in Merlin Sunday afternoon, the Dashwood boys coached by Exeter high school teacher Joe Fulop will attempt this Sunday afternoon to square matters on their home diamond. Two of Dashwood's top performers John Hayter and Pete Kleinstiver were not in the line-up in the opening game but are expected to be in uniform for the next game and will add a lot to the team. Hayter who also plays shortstop for the Intermediate Tigers was in Montreal over the weekend taking in an Expo game and we hear made a good catch in the centre field bleachers on a ball lit by Expo catcher John Bateman in batting practice. The playoffs in the Exeter and district Rec softball league are also well underway and the games are providing plenty of excitement for the spectators. At the time of writing, Exeter Legion, Kinsmen and Dufferin Hotel have advanced to the next round while the junior Hawks lead the Crediton Tigers two games to one in the other round. Fair racing It's now official. Harness racing will be a part of this year's Exeter Fall Fair. Official approval was received early this week from the Ontario Trotting Association from whom permission must be received to stage any racing events. Two races with two heats are expected to be run during the afternoon of Saturday September 26. The group of local horse enthusiasts headed by Jim Wallace are planning a stag party at the arena on the night of September 11 to gain additional monies to improve the track before fair day. The town's RAP committee has spent 5330 on a layer of stone dust on the track but an additional coating is needed to provide an ideal racing bottom. Fencing is also necessary on the outside of the track at certain locations and a stand for the judges and officials must be erected. Know baseball? The difference between right and wrong in baseball is some times a fine, hairline distinction. Take this hypothetical situation in a major league ball game. Say the Cincinnati Reds are leading Houston 1-0, as the Astros come to bat in the fifth inning at Crosley Field. Denis Menke lashes a single to left, advances to second on Joe Pepitone's sacrifice, and moves to third when Doug Rader taps one to the Reds' second baseman. John Edwards is purposely passed bringing up pinch hitter Bob Watson. Manager Harry Walker now orders a steal home. As the Reds' pitcher goes into his stretch, Menke breaks for the plate. The pitcher promptly backs completely off the rubber, so as to avoid any question of a balk, and throws the ball home . It is apparent that Menke will be out, but Watson, sizing up the situation fast, slashes at the ball and drives a single in to right field. Immediately, the Reds claim the batter interfered with the play at the plate, while the Astros argue that Watson had every right to hit at the pitcher's delivery. If you were the umpire, how would you rule? The batter is out for interference. Under the circumstances, the man on the mound is not a pitcher, but an infielder. (See Section 8.0] e: "If the pitcher removes his pivot foot from contact with the pitcher's plate by stepping backward with that foot, he thereby becomes an infielder . ."). Had there been fewer than two out, Menke, not the batter, would have been declared out for the latter's interference under Section 7.08 g: "Any base runner is out when he attemp is to score on a play in which the batter interferes with the play at home base with less than two out. . ." Tigers drop opener in provincial play STOCKS IN ACTION — Every Sunday afternoon the stock cars are off and running at the Ausable Valley track, south of Brinsley, The picture above shows some of the action in Sunday's third race.
