FOR ALL. GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Wrestling
tips
A very successful wrestling tournament was held
at South Huron District High School Friday afternoon
and evening of last week.
In a four-team event, the local grapplers coached
by Doug Ellison and Jack Riddell fared very well
finishing second against three strong clubs, two from
much larger communities.
Waterloo Collegiate were the champions with a
total of 89 points, only five more than the South Huron
boys. Listowel finished third with 70 points and St.
Jerome's of Kitchener placed fourth with 68 points to
their credit.
This type of wrestling is a real test of strength and
skill and is in complete contrast to the wrestling 'shows'
seen on television.
In order to familiarize our readers with true
amateur wrestling we will pass along some information
that was included in a pamphlet handed out at Friday's
local meet at the high school.
Every match has three periods of two minutes
duration each unless the bout is won by a pin in a
shorter time. To open a match, the wrestlers start from
a neutral standing position after shaking hands.
Each wrestler tries to gain control of his
opponent and take him to the mat with a takedown. On
a successful takedown, the referee will signal two points
with his right hand, usually the first points handed out
in a match.
After the initial takedown, the defensive or down
wrestler is trying to escape or reverse his position while
the offensive or top wrestler tries to stay on top and
secure a hold with which he can keep his opponent's
shoulder blades on the mat for two seconds for a fall or
pin to end the match.
If the match is not won by a pin, the referee
wards the bout to the boy who has accumulated the
greatest number of mat points.
The following point system is used to determine
the winner of a match.
Takedown Two points are awarded when a
wrestler takes his opponent to the mat and stays behind
him in control.
Escape — One point is awarded if the down
wrestler can get into a neutral position or away from the
control of the offensive man.
Reversal — Two points are awarded for getting
out from underneath and moving to a position of
control on top of the opponent.
Near fall — Three points are awarded for holding
opponent's shoulders on or near the mat but neither
close or long enough for a fall or pin.
Predicament — Two points for controlling the
opponent in a pinning situation and a fall or near fall is
imminent.
Stalling One point is given to the non-offender
when his opponent fails to make an honest attempt to
wrestle.
Illegal holds — One point is awarded to the
non-offending wrestler,
It is essential to keep at least one eye on the
referee as the match progresses. He awards points as the
action continues by holding up the fingers of his right
hand to inform the official scorer.
A Bunch Of Veterans
The saying that 'life begins at forty' is being
borne out quite well this year by quite a few players in
the National Hockey league that have reached the 40
mark or are very close.
Gordie Howe is, of course, the oldest competitor
at 41. A pair of goal tenders Jacques Plante and Gump
Worsley are next at 40 while Terry Sawchuck and Tim
Horton are each 39.
- Next in line come Jean Belliveau and Jim
Morrison at 38 and Alex Delvecchio, Gerry Ehman, Leo
Boivin, Ron Stewart, Don Marshall, Dean Prentice, Al
Arbour and Jean--Guy Talbot at 37.
. The expansion clubs have the oldest and youngest
teams in the NHL. The St. Louis Blues are the oldest
club with an average age of 29.8 years, a full year older
than the second oldest Pittsburgh Penguins.
The Los Angeles Kings are the youngest with an
average of 27 years.
World Hockey Tickets
Tickets for the World Hockey championships to
be held in Canada next March are already on sale and an
order form can be found in any recent issue of Hockey
News.
The first fifteen games of the tourney will be
played at the Montreal Forum from March 12-20 with
the scene switching to Winnipeg for the conclusion from
March 22-29,
Due to heavy initial interest and advance demand
for tickets, only the full schedule of 15 games at
Montreal may be ordered at special prices.
The Montreal prices for the full series range from
$35 for terrace seats to $70 for boxes and mezzanine.
The Montreal portion of the championships opens
at eight o'clock on March 12 with Canada meeting
Finland and closes on March 20 at the same time with
the Russians and Canadians tangling. Two games are
slated for each day in Montreal except on the opening
day and March 16 and 17.
