By Rpss Haugh
Lots of
activities
This summer has robably been one of the best
for many years in this district for the number of sports
available to young boys and girls.
Topping the list has to be the swimming program
at the Exeter pool where 408 youngsters took lessons
and also participated in open swimming under the
capable guidance of Joan Warren, Carol Lynne Shapton
and Judy Glover.
Results of the final Rec Cross tests are listed
elsewhere on these pages and a quick look at the
number of successful candidates will bear out the
excellent training they are receiving locally.
The yearly summer playground program held at
the three local parks took care of the recreational needs
of more than one hundred youngsters, The wading pool
at Victoria Park also enjoyed a busy summer with a lot
of tiny tots using the facilities. •
In. Usborne township, minor softball leagues for
boys and girls were organized for the first time and also
gave more than one hundred boys and girls the
opportunity to participate.
A four-team boys midget league was organized
with teams participating from Thames Road, Hurondale,
Whalen and Elimville and a girls loop was also started in
the fifteen-years-of-age and younger class with
representation from the same four communities.
A tournament involving the eight teams was held
at the Whalen diamond located on the farm of Bill
Morley on Monday.
We spent an hour or so at the tourney Monday
afternoon and were impressed with the enthusiasm
displayed by the youngsters, What they lacked in
polished play they certainly made up in desire,
The organizers of the leagues and the managers
and coaches of all the clubs are to be commended on
their efforts in providing healthful recreation for the
youngsters of their communities.
The same community spirit was displayed in
Crediton this year when pee wee and bantam baseball
teams were formed for the first time.
Under the coaching of Lorne Preszcator the
Crediton pee wees advanced to the finals of the Western
Ontario Athletic Association before being eliminated.
Dashwood was also represented by two minor
clubs and interest for the youngsters will certainly
increase there with the installation of floodlights at the
athletic park.
Good Football Season
If the first few games of the season are any
indication of what is to follow, Canadian football league
fans are in for an interesting year, especially in the east.
What was supposed to be an almost invincible
Ottawa Rough Rider football machine was slowed down
considerably in Hamilton Monday afternoon and now
the Ticats from the Mountain City are the only
undefeated club in the west or east.
While only able to catch just a few smatterings of
the game on radio we heard a good portion of the Fifth
Quarter, a post-game show on a Hamilton radio station
when fans call in, to air their grievances and ask
questions on the game from the experts.
Tiger Cat fans in this area will be pleased to hear
that Ted Page played an outstanding game on the
Hamilton defence and was very instrumental in holding
Vic Washington, the top Ottawa runner to only a few
yards all afternoon.
Ted, who spent a few of his younger days in
Exeter had a tryout with the Denver Broncos of the
American football league and re-joined Hamilton just
before the season started. He is also forced to spend two
days a month on reserve army duty in the United States.
This is usually worked in during a lull in the schedule so
only practice sessions are missed.
Harold and Mary Holtzman of town, relatives of
Ted Page were part of the record crowd of 30,298 that
jammed the Hamilton park for Monday's game.
Playing football on a hot summer afternoon is a
good way to lose a little weight. During the
Hamilton-Ottawa game, Angelo Mosca of the Tiger-Cats
who tips the scales at 275 pounds lost 17 pounds during
the afternoon.
Another Hamilton performer Gamey Henley who
weighs less than 200 pounds shed 11 pounds during the
course of the game.
Heads Hood Hitters
A graduate of the minor baseball ranks in Hensall
is leading the Stratford Hoods hitting parade in the
Senior Intercounty Baseball playoffs.
Steve Kyle who has played several different
positions with the Stratford club this year has collected
eight hits in twenty playoff trips to the plate to lead his
club with a .400 average.
While this was being written the Stratford team
was trailing Hamilton three games to two in a
semi-final series, During the regular season Steve batted
well over .300.
Exhibition Games
Several exhibition baseball games are on tap in
the district Friday night.
The Dashwood Tigers fresh from an OBA playoff
win over Wilkesport will take on the Clinton Colts in an
exhibition game on the Dashwood diamond Friday
night at eight o'clock.
The Tigers travel to Ivey Saturday afternoon to
take part in the first of a best-of-three semi final series.
The winner of the Dashwood-Ivey set will play host to
Mattice in the all-Ontario final to be played on
Thanksgiving weekend.
The Clinton Colts, Huron-Perth champs are also
waiting for their next round OBA competition, The
Colts eliminated Tillsonburg Sunday and are expected
to meet Walkerton or Corunna in the next round.
The other game Friday night pits the Crediton
and Lucan pee wees against each other on the Crediton
diamond at 7:30.

Walsingham in a similar three
game series.

on their home diamond by a

County town Sunday afternoon.
In the third and deciding
game in Dashwood Monday
night the Tigers came up with
two runs in the bottom of the
eighth to pull out a 10-S
decision and the right to advance
to further OBA play.
RAVELLE LEADS TIGERS
Third sacker Pete Ravelle led
the Dashwood club to their 10.8
Monday win with four hits to his
credit.
Ravelle singled in the first
inning to drive in two runs,
singled again in the fifth,
homered in the seventh to start a
three run rally and doubled up
the alley in right centre, eighth
to send the winning runs across
the plate.
In the first inning after
Wilkesport had tallied once, Jim
Hayter and Bob Hoffman drilled
back-to-back singles, moved up a
base on Stan Lovie's sacrifice
and came racing home on
Ravelle's first single oe the night.
The teams traded single runs
in the second to maintain the
one-run Dashwood lead. Bud
Desjardine reached second on an
error went to third on Bob
Webb's sacrifice bunt and scored
after the catch on Bob
Hoffman's long fly to centre for
the third Dashwood run.
Wilkesport scored once in
each of the fifth and sixth
innings to tie the score after the
Tigers had counted twice in the
bottom of the fifth.
Ravelle singled to open the
Dashwood fifth but was forced
at second on Gord Vincent's
fielder's choice grounder. Dave
Rats came in as a pinch hitter
and promptly doubled to score
Vincent. Rats completed the
base cycle on another
two-bagger from the bat of Bud
Desjardine.
Wilkesport moved in front
8-5 with three big runs in the
seventh but the Tigers bounced
right back in their half to tie the
score again.
Ravelle opened the inning
with his drive over the left field
fence. Cord Vincent and John
Hayter each reached base on a
visiting fielding miscue and
scored on Ratz's second double of
the night.
The Tigers scored the winning
runs in the eighth before any
batters were retired. Bob
Hoffman singled to open the
inning and moved to third when
the Wilkesport left fielder
dropped Stan Lovie's fly ball.
Both came in to score when
Ravelle drilled his double to
right centre.
Bob Webb went the distance
on the Dashwood mound and
while allowing 13 hits was tough
in the clutch. The young right
hander recorded 10 strikeouts
and retired the side in order in
the ninth.
FAIL IN CLUTCH
In their 54 loss in Wilkesport
Sun day afternoon the Tigers
came up with seven base hits but
left nine men stranded as they
failed to hit at the right time.
They missed their best
scoring opportunity in the very
first inning when they scored
their lone rub but left the bases
loaded.
Bob Hoffman reached first on
a fielder's choice in the first and
scored as the result of singles
from the bats of till Schade and
Stan Lovie.
The Dashwood hits were well
spread with the balance, also all
singles going to Jim Hayter, Bob
Hoffman, Pete Ravelle, Dave
Ratz and Robbie Wein.
Wein went the full nine
inning distance on the
Dashwood hill and was touched
for eleven safeties.
LATE RALLY HELPS
A three run rally in the
bottom of the seventh along
with excellent pitching by lefty
Dave Ratz in the late innings
allowed the Tigers to take the
opener by a score or 6-3.

their final run in the fifth, Ratz
only faced 14 batters in the last
