Huronview in November 1965.
On his .100th birday, he was in
good health and his memory was
excellent and accurate. With his
school buddy, John Mitchell,
Mr. Stewart was honored for
being a century old during
Canada's centennial year.
Mr, Stewart joined Carmel
Presbyterian Church in the
spring of 1890 and was a
member there until his death.
He was predeceased by his
wife, the former Annie Bell, in

Duncan Stewart, Huronview,
formerly of Hensall, passed away
Tuesday in his 103rd year.
• He was born January 14,
1867 on Lot 34, Concession 3,
Usborne Township about four
miles southeast of Hensall, the
son of Robert Stewart and Jane
Ross, pioneers in the area.
He attended SS No. 1
Usborne Township School, later
• known as the Hurandale School.
Mr. Stewart spent his early
years in the area working with
his family. He spent the summer
of 1886 near Le Mars, Iowa,
with settlers from the home
area. In 1889 he was in
Manitoba and Minnesota.
The deceased farmed in
Manitoba from 1899 to 1909.
From 1909 to 1945 he farmed
one and one-quarter miles north
of Hensall.

the local arena. About 120 are

burns bales
Claire Deichert, RR 1, Zurich,
Blind Line, Hay Township,
received a surprise on Monday
(Labor Day), when he noticed
that two wagon loads of baled
straw attached to his farm
tractor were on fire. The blaze
was caused by a spark from the
tractor. Both wagon loads of
baled straw were burnt to the
ground.
If the wind had been in
another direction it would have
been serious for Mr. Deichert.
Zurich Fire brigade responded
to the call.

drowns Sunday
Funeral service for Gordon
Smith, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs.
John W. Smith, RR 3, Clinton,
who was drowned Sunday
afternoon when he slipped into
about eight feet of water while
wading along the edge of a
private gravel pit about two and
a half miles southwest of
Clinton, was held from Ball
Funeral Home, Clinton, Tuesday
afternoon. Burial was in Bairds
cemetery.
Gordon was the nephew of
Mrs. Gordon Troyer, RR 2,
Hensall.
Legion auxiliary
plans banquet
The members of the Hensall
Legion Ladies Auxiliary met for
the first meeting of the season
Tuesday evening in the Legion
Hall.
President Mrs. Garnet Allan
conducted the meeting.
The money draw was
postponed until October.
Arrangements were made for the
Kinsmen banquet this Saturday
evening at the arena.
The Auxiliary will observe
their 29th birthday October 7
with a night out.
Mrs. Harry Horton won the
mystery prize. Mrs. Clarence
Reid took the guessing prize and
Mrs. William Smale got the
attendance prize.
A pot luck lunch and bingo
followed the meeting.
