T-A photo Members of council had several complaints to pass on to the Exeter RAP committee this week. The first was concerning the local swimming pool and Councillor George Vriese questioned why it had been closed during the hot holiday weekend. Reeve Boyle advised that the life guards at the pool had taken off Saturday to attend the rodeo and the pool was then closed for the season so there would be no charges received from the Public Utilities Commission for operating into the month of September. It was indicated that if the pool was left open into September it would cost about $70 for hydro and water services. Vricse said it was a shame to Liquor lounge — Continued from front page vote around the table and the members voted five to three not to turn the matter over to the board. Only Deputy-Reeve Mery Cudmore and Councillors Helen Jermyn and George Vriese thought council should seek the board's advice. Mayor Delbridge then named a committee of Cudmore, Vriese, Jermyn and Dobson to look at the proposed site and present a report for council's next meeting. Mrs. Jermyn declined to stand on the committee and she was replaced by Reeve Derry Boyle. Members of the committee had a difficult time choosing a time suitable to all to visit the site and this prompted Dobson to suggest that perhaps council should have turned the matter over to the planning board. Other permits approved, subject to inspection by the building inspector, were as follows: Harold Chappel, to renovate part of house on Mill St.;" William Johnston, to side house on Andrew;' Bruce Dreyer, to erect a carport at 145 Thomas; Bruce Cann, to erect a garage and breezeway at 93 Andrew. Schools — Continued from front page by the fact kindergarten classes were scheduled for the first time in five schools at the north end of the county. Secondary school enrolment accounted for 174 of the increase and there were 212 more elementary students. The other 13 was made up from an increase in the three schools housing retarded children. There are 11 students at the Huron Hope school at Huron Park and Mr. Coulter said this constituted too much work for one teacher. The board approved hiring extra help for teaching the retarded children at Huron Hope. Total enrolment at South Huron District High School was listed at 951, compared to the 894 there last year. Most elementary schools in this area also witnessed slight enrolment increases. The exception was Huron Centennial School at Brucefield where enrolment was down 20 from last year. There are now four empty classrooms at the school. Enrolment at other area elementary schools is listed below, with last year's figures in brackets: Exeter 522 (496), Usborne 330 (284), Zurich 209 (203), Hensall 266 (263), Stephen 396 (379), Huron Park 342 (261), Brucefield 672 (692). 171111111111111111111111ww'k.... have A pool and not have it opened, but Mayor .,Jack .Delbridge pointed out that most pools in LOndori had been closed for over a week. Councillor Tom MacMillan, a member of RAP, noted that it was difficult to get life guards to work after sehoOl opened and it was impossible to open the pool without them. However, he later said he was going to ask RAP to investigate the cost involved in installing heating equipment at the pool so it could be used for longer periods each spring and fall. The matter is expected to be discussed at RAF's meeting next week. A DISGRACE Councillor Ross Dobson later told council that RAP should take a hard look at the facilities at the fairgrounds, after stating that the •washrooms were "a disgrace". He said the facilities available to the 10,000 people attending the weekend rodeo "would make you sick". "If we're going to run the Exeter police — Continued from front page men on duty for 24 hours each Chief da Chief Day explained that at present the police go off duty after 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning and he opined that it was between then and the morning shift when the recent breakins were staged. Council were also advised the 'department now had a tri-pod for the radar set so it could be operated without having the cruiser evident as a warning to speeders. The police also have a sawed-off shot gun in their possession — a gift from the London Police Department. DISCUSS DOGS A discussion was held on dogs and council decided to advise the Exeter Veterinary Clinic that owners who allow their dogs to run at large should be charged after they have received two warnings. Reeve Derry Boyle was of the opinion they should be given only one warning, but others thought two should be handed out. The police are to be notified by the dog catcher of infractions of the bylaw. The other accident was at 8;40 p.m. and involved a car driven by Dana Lamont, Toronto, and was investiggted by Constable Lamont, no relation to the driver. Lamont was proceeding east on Huron St. about three miles east of Exeter when he lost control of his car and it flipped over in the north ditch. Total damage was $2,500 and the Toronto man sustained minor injuries. Another hit and run was reported Sunday at 12:40 p.m. on Highway 21. Michael Mack, Kitchener, told Constable F. L, Giffin he had been proceeding north and was side-swipped by a southbound car. Damage was listed at $100. On Monday, a car driven by John McAllister, RR 1 Centralia, struck and killed a dog on Highway 4 south of Exeter. Damage to the car was set at $50 and the dog was killed. Half of the amount was to be returned if the grounds were cleaned up Properly after the rodeo. Boyle noted the arena was paying its way by taking a split of the gate receipts from teams playing there, and a similar policy on the grounds would help provide adequate facilities Dobson also suggested that RAP members look at the way the boards were being installed around the ice surface at the arena. He suggested some dangers may arise from the manner in which the boards were being put in.
