FOR ALL GOOD $PORT
By Ross Haugh
Busy
summer
With the end of public school classes this week,
youngsters in Exeter and the surrounding communities
have the opportunity to enjoy the many recreation
facilities offered locally by Exeter's RAP committee,
the group that administers all activities of recreation,
arena and parks.
The big "if" in this summer's program, of course
will be the weatherman. Despite the cool weather of the
past weekend, the local swimming pool was open.
Recreation director Alvin Willert said with the
cool air temperatures it was impossible to get the water
temperature above 62 degrees. This makes for much less
than desirable swimming conditions.
Next Wednesday, the six-week summer
playground program gets underway with registration at
the Arena and Victoria Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Registration will continue through Friday.
Any youngsters who are eligible for kindergarten
classes this fall will be accepted for the six week
program and the maximum age limit is 15.
Willert and his staff of playground supervisors are
spending this week at a special playground course in
Goderich sponsored jointly by Conestoga College and
several Recreation Associations.
Local supervisors, Betty Jean Miller, Kathy
MacDonald, Jo-Anne Burke and Pete Mason are
participating in the special training sessions this week
and will be in charge of the local program when it gets
underway next week.
Children who register for the playground program
are asked to bring along a one dollar registration fee.
This is the only charge for the summer activities that
will include the usual parades, penny carnivals and
hikes.
Last year sleep-outs were held at the park and this
year Willert hopes to extend this to possibly three-day
camp-outs at Morrison Dam for children in the 10 to 13
year bracket and a repeat of the park sleep-outs for one
night for the younger boys and girls.
Swim Program Set
Also, next week, the full summer schedule at the
Exeter swimmingpool will be getting underway. Regular
swimming instruction classes will start Wednesday
morning, July 2.
Instruction will be given daily from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. 'and 4 to 6 p.m. Registration forms appear in this
week's issue of the T-A and may be mailed to Alvin
The senior swimming supervisor at the pool this
year will be Joan Warren of Windsor. Joan is a niece of
Rev. Douglas Warren, who has been serving as minister
of .Main Street United Church here and takes over the
new Crediton United Church pastoral charge at the end
of this month.
Assisting in the swim instruction will be Carol
Lynn Shapton and Judy Glover. Both girls are busy this
week gaining further knowledge in the swimming and
lifeguard field. Carol Lynn is attending an instructor's
course at London and Judy is in Owen Sound
completing a leader's course.
For the second year, a season ticket plan for open
swimming will be available. This means a big saving for
anyone who takes regular advantage of the swimming
pool facilities.
Tickets that go on sale this week will cost a boy
or girl, 14 or under $5, anyone over 14 will pay $7. 50
and a family group plan is available for $20. Regular
admission fees of 15c for public school students, 25c for
high school students and 50c for adults will still be in
effect for those wishing to pay each time they attend.
Beginning Saturday of this week open swimming
is available seven days a week from 2 to 4 and 7:30 to 9.
For the younger fry, the wading pool at Victoria
Park will be open each afternoon during the summer
months from 2 to 4 p.m. beginning next Wednesday.
