Firstly, the Ashfield local of the Ontario Farmers' Union has imported over three hundred tons of American fertilizer at a price approximately $10 below the 0.F.U.'s voluntary collective bargaining price. Secondly, a fertilizer salesman from an affiliated company that the O.F.U. dealt with is using this price list to sell fertilizer, regardless of whether or not the purchaser is an O.F.U,. Member, Thirdly, many people that I have talked to throughout Western and South-Western Ontario have purchased fertilizer below the O.F,U. voluntary collective bargaining price. Another good example of voluntary collective bargaining at work in agriculture is the Q.F.U. attempt to voluntary collective bargain with corn, They tried to get a price of $1.50 for corn, I would like to meet anybody in Ontario that received $1.50 for corn this year. Voluntary collective bargaining was tried in Ontario agriculture back in the 1920's. It was a complete flop. Farmers outside the scheme, sometimes only a handful, would undermine the marketing contracts and pricing structure. They claimed a right to make their own deals with the trade. They cut prices and nullified the effectiveness of the voluntary delivery and price contracts. It is time the leaders of the O.F.U. decided whether they are in favour of compulsory marketing schemes. Ontario's deputy treasurer and deputy minister of economics, H. Ian Macdonald, said private and public, considerations in land use planning are both important. He noted that, in the Niagara Peninsula, there are those who feel the rich soil should be preserved for agriculture while the owners of that land feel they should be able to dispose of it for maximum profit. "Profit and public views on land use are a problem we cannot escape from," he said. Mr. Macdonald said it also should be recognized that often, prime land for agricultural use is also prime land for industry. Recommendations in the report of Ontario's special committee on farm income that a provincial land resources commission be established to co-ordinate land use planning drew opposition from another speaker, Prof. James B. Milner of the University of Toronto's faculty of law. He noted the report was recommending another Crown corporation, the Ontario Land Corporation. "My chief complaint about these proposals is that they perpetuate the present practice of setting up a board to do the job of government," he said. W. C. Heine, editor of The London Free Press, spoke at the institute's annual banquet on a recent trip to Iron Curtain countries. Why Tip The Balance IN OUR FAVOR?
