MEN'S WEAR
By MRS. JOHN E. McEWEN
Hensel!
When I was a little girl we
always went to Grandma
Jarrott's on Christmas Day.
She lived in the village of
Hillsgreen which was five
miles west of Kippen on the
Town Line.
Her father, William Gram
lived with her.
Hillsgreen had a general
store owned and operated by
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Troyer,
two churches, Presbyterian
and Methodist, a blacksmith
shop owned by N. Hill, a
town hall where Christmas
concerts were held and a few
houses.
Or andma had a cow, horse,
buggy and cutter. She had
hens and eggs, made her own
butter, baked her own bread,
had a good sized garden and
so had all the necessary
vegetables.
In the kitchen she had a
stove with an oven door on
each side. The stove was
made of iron.
Sh e also raised her own
turkeys. For Christmas Day
she dressed the turkeys from
her flock (also had some for
sale) had all the necec,..ary
vegetables raised in her
garden, had a good supply of
home made bread on hand,
lots of whipping cream
skimmed off the milk and a
good supply of table cream
for the tea and coffee, had a
real old-fashioned Christmas
cake, short bread and mince
pie.
