RESPIRATORY
DISEASE
The daring young man on the flying trapeze
never flew through the air with more ease than a lot of
difficult words like hypoxia, hypercapnia, and nasal
cannulea, used at the annual meeting of the Canadian
Tuberculosis Association held in Vancouver.
"Never mind the difficult words," is the advice
of Dr. C. W. L. Jeanes, executive secretary of the Can-
adian Tuberculosis Association. "The thing for the or-
dinary person to do is try never to be a chest physi-
cian's problem. The doctors are talking about oxygen.
Everyone needs oxygen. Our brains, our muscles, our
digestive systems need it. Awake or asleep we need it.
We need it 24 hours a day. As long as we are healthy
our lungs deliver it to the blood and the blood carries
it through the body."
"The trouble is that more and more people are
treating their lungs badly, mostly by smoking too much.
Their lungs lose the ability to contract. They can't
squeeze out the carbon dioxide which the 'blood picked
up while delivering oxygen. The carbon dioxide -fills
the space needed for fresh air and oxygen."
"The doctors are talking about ways to get oxy-
gen to him. Hyperbaric oxygen is oxygen with pressure
behind it. Pressure and skill — for it has to be the
right amount of oxygen. Too much can do harm. Pre-
vention is the best way to cope. Stop smoking, especial-
ly cigarettes. If you live where there is air pollution,
join the movement to get it corrected," Dr. Jeanes con-
cluded.
