All are in for tough competition if the amount of teams entered is any indication of the calibre of play. The local Hawks have taken a big step, moving up to the Ontario Hockey Association Central "C" grouping. Although, the Hawks dropped their opening game in 'Elmira Sunday by a 4-1 count, they should make a good showing in the new loop. Coach Terry Bourne told us over the weekend that his defence will be bolstered considerably within the next week or two. A former local minor star, David Burke is returning for the winter and will be a big help to the defensive corps. David, who is now more than six feet tall and weights 215 pounds played the last two winters with Barrie, also a junior "C" club. We watched the Hawks in their Friday night exhibition against the Crediton Tigers and felt they have plenty of potential. The Hawks were down five goals at one point early in the game and never gave up to come within one goal of tying it up late in the third period. Although this is basically a young club we know they will make lots of mistakes in higher company, but feel their hustling type of play will more than compensate. While the youngsters give all they have to create a winning hockey team fan support is always very important. Playing to a large and enthusiastic crowd is a big help to any team, regardless of the sport or the age of the competitors. A goodly number of Exeter fans accompanied the club to Elmira Sunday for the first game of the season. The same Elmira team will be back at the Exeter arena tomorrow night, Friday for the first official home game of the Hawks this year. Opposition for the Hawks this year will be supplied by Preston, Hespeler, Walkerton, New Hamburg and Elmira. One change has been made in the schedule since it was first released. Manager Bob Baylmam of the Hawks received a call from Hugh McLean of the OHA early Saturday morning asking the local club to play in Preston this Saturday night Jets in Large Gi-oup The Lucan-Ilderton Jets are entered in an OHA Intermediate league that covers a large portion of Western Ontario. The Jets will be meeting Seaforth, Port Elgin, Durham and Elmira in a double schedule and will play home and home contests with Fergus, Acton, Georgetown, Hespeler and Cheltenham. Although the schedule has not yet been drafted, most of the home games of the Jets are expected to be played on Tuesday nights. The Randall Arena at Huron Park, Centralia will be used for all Jet games. The Jets have lined up a strong club and should more than hold their own in "C" company. At least a half dozen former stars of St. Marys Lincoln junior teams have been signed and will join the Lucan, Ilderton and area competitors to form the nucleus of the team. Another Big Bunch Another district club, the Crediton Tigers have moved up into higher company for the coming season. The Tigers last year's grand champions in the Western Ontario Hockey Association have been entered in "C" company in the same league and will have plenty of competition. The Crediton team, similarly to Lucan-Ilderton are playing in a league composed of 10 teams divided into two divisions. In the southern section they will vie for top honors with Wingham, Listowel, Clinton and Milverton. The northern clubs are Elora, Arthur, Harriston, Walkerton and Meaford. Dominions Look Good The fourth team in the area that should provide a good brand • of hockey is the Zurich Dominions. Coached by Hal Flaro, who was stationed a few years ago at CFB Centralia, the Dominions will be playing against Mitchell, Belmont, Lambeth and Hanover in a junior "D" grouping. Chip With Rochester Hensall's contribution to major league hockey, Tack Chipchase is performing this year with the Rochester Americans of the Americans of the American Hockey League. The last couple of years Jack has spent in the Central loop and this is a step up in the Toronto Maple Leaf chain. According to the latest issue of the Hockey News, Jack has been seeing some action with the Americans and drew penalties in two of the games listed. Lots, of action Junior Panthers The South Huron Panthers were outscored 13-6 Tuesday afternoon in the Huron-Perth Conference junior football final played on the local school field. Coached by Doug Ellison, the SH youngsters finished in first place in the league standings and received a bye into the finals against Goderich. The team is shown above after Tuesday's game. Exeter ice, The Tigers, last year's WOAA grand champs jumped into a quick 5-0 lead in the first period of play and appeared to be well on the way to a very decisive victory. The Hawks, unable to get going in the first twenty minutes of play against their more experienced opposition, steadied considerably in the second session and came on with a rush in the last period to make the final score very close. A member of the 1967-68 version of the Hawks led the Crediton scoring attack. The Jets -have now won three straight times in pre-season games before their regular schedule in OHA intermediate ranks begin. They meet the University of Western Ontario Mustangs in another exhibition tilt at the Centralia rink Tuesday night at 8:30. The Crediton Tigers, preparing to compete in a WOAA intermediate "C" grouping now boast a one-one record in exhibition play, having edged the Exeter junior Hawks 6-5 in Exeter, Friday. ROBB LEADS JETS Jamie Robb, a member of the Crediton team last year that won the WOAA grand championship scored three times Tuesday to lead the scoring parade against his old team-mates. The Lucan-Ederton club scored three times in the first period without a reply from Crediton and upped the score to 9-2 after two periods of play. Barry Hearn, Tom Monteith and Robb were the L-I marksmen in the first twenty minutes of play. In the second session, Hearn and Robb added their second scores of the night and Bill Neil fired a pair of markers while singles were fired by defencemen Don Urbshott and Ken Loft. Crediton goals were chalked up in single fashion by Glenn Overholt and Jim Morrissey. Craig Chapman drew assists on both scores. In the last stanza Bill McIntosh and Jamie Robb scored single goals to complete the L-I counting and Paul Young tallied for Crediton.
