HOCKEY PLAYERS Tigers capture Ontario ft
The Dashwood. Tigers won
the Ontario Association
Intermediate Baseball.
Championship in the quickest
Possible way over the
Thanksgiving holiday.
The Tigers 014seored another
Tiger team, from Mattiee in the
Saturday opener 12.9 and came
right back in, the same style
Sunday with a 12-8` victory to
wrap up the provincial title.
Both games were played on the
Dashwood diamond.
It was the second all-Ontario
championship for a Dashwood
intermediate club in. 15 years.
Dashwood disposed of the
Walsingham Senators, also in
straight games, almost a month
ago to advance to the final
round. Mattice, winners of the
only intermediate grouping in
Northern Ontario received a bye
into the championship series.
The play of both clubs
suffered severely from their long
layoffs but the large crowds on
hand Saturday and Sunday were
treated to plenty of action and
saw base runners in almost every
inning.
During the entire series, on
only one occasion was each team
retired in one-two-three order,
both instances happening in the
Sunday game,
Dashwood pitcher Bob Webb
got three straight outs in the
third inning and Willie St. Louis
of Mattice did the same thing in
the Dashwood seventh, although
he gave up one base hit.
Jim Hayter started the inning
with a single but was thrown out
trying to steal second. St. Louis
struck out the next two batters
to record a perfect inning.
Dashwood's pitching staff of
Bob Webb and Dave Ratz
combined to bring home the
championship and were helped
by timely hitting by their mates
and costly Mattice errors.
Webb came on to relieve Ratz
in the seventh inning of
Saturday's game and went the
full nine inning distance in the
second contest.
The South Huron District
High School football clubs are at
the top of the standings in their
respective divisions of the
Huron-Perth Conference.
The junior Panthers have
three wins in as many starts in
league play and hold undisputed
possession of first place. Doug
Ellison's club shut-out Stratford
Central 13-0 in the first half of a
doubleheader at the local school
field, Thursday.
In the second half of the twin
bill, Ron Bogart's senior
Panthers squeezed past Stratford
Central 13-12 in a rough contest
played on a muddy field.
The win was the third
consecutive triumph for the
seniors and gives them a share of
first place with Goderich and
Wingham.
The next Conference action
for the South Huron teams
comes this afternoon, Thursday
when they are again at home for
two games.
The juniors will be playing
host to Listowel while the
seniors are taking on Seaforth.
Goderich and Wingham senior
clubs meet this week in a crucial
contest.
TWO LONG PASSES
A pair of long forward passes
that went for touchdowns
provided the South Huron
juniors with enough power to
down Stratford Central, last
year's league champions 13-0.
After a scoreless first quarter,
South Huron quarterback Randy
Decker hit Brian Campbell with
a 35 yard pass in the early
moments of the second period
to open the game scoring.
Decker kicked a single point
in the third quarter to up the
Another deadlock
in Legion darts
For the second consecutive
week a tie exists for first place in
the Exeter Legion mixed darts
league.
The Hairpins and Dark Angels
are deadlocked at the top with
10 points apiece while the
Cleaners are only a point back in
third spot. Another notch
behind are the Canners and Dart
Sharks with eight points apiece.
No change has taken place in
the individual record since
opening night with Eric
Heywood's 140 best in men's
high score with Ann Romaniuk
leading the ladies at 132.
Last week's scores are as

South Huron lead to 7-0.
Another aerial toss from
Decker from his own 45 yard
line was picked off by Larry
Bourne and carried over the
Stratford goal line to complete
the scoring for the afternoon.
In a post game vote, Gary
Eagleson was named the best
performer on the local defensive
unit and Larry Bourne was
, chosen best on the team,
offensively.
TOO, TOO CLOSE
The senior Panthers kept
their winning streak intact with
the 13-12 win over Stratford
Central, but- coach Ron Bogart
said after the game "it was too,
too close."
Although the footing was
treacherous due to heavy rains
of the previous night', a lot of
the yardage gained came on
forward passes.
Stratford quarterback Glenn
Harloff completed 10 ofh23 pass
attempts good for 130 yards.

VISITORS SCORE FIRST
Mattice scored three times in
the first four innings Saturday
without a reply from the home
club and put a scare into the
Dashwood fans.
Typical of their play all
season, the hometown Tigers
exploded for eight runs in the
bottom of the fourth and came
right back with another four
markers in the next inning.
Mattice clean-up hitter Jean
Paul Gagnon singled to score the
+ first run for the visitors. A hit
batsman, a Dashwood error and
Yvon Aube's single upped the
Mattice run total to three in the
fourth.
Twelve Dashwood batters
went to the plate in the fourth
when they blew the game wide
open with an eight run rally.
Gord Vincent and Jim Hayter
poked doubles while Bob
Hoffman and Stan Lovie
contributed singles to spark the
rally.
In the fifth, singles by Bill
Schade and Hoffman along with
a visiting error and a balk were
mainly responsible for the four
Dashwood runs.
Three infield singles by Paul
Brunelle, Gaetan Gosselin and
Jean Paul Gagnon along with
Barry Gibson's solid single, a
Dashwood error and Claude
Gagnon's triple sent six Mattice
runners across the plate in the
seventh.
In the seventh, Mattice batted
out of turn in their second time
around with Art Dillon one of
the club's top hitters batting
ahead of pitcher Willie St. Louis,
but the intended strategy failed
as Dillon popped out.

Trying for two points
Once and awhile a football coach decides his charges should try a
pass play good for two points on a convert attempt. This was the
case Thursday when the South Huron Panthers edged Stratford
Central 13-12. Above, Barry Baynham fails to hang onto the ball
after the second SH touchdown but the Panthers got another chance
when Stratford were offside on the play. In a quick change, Jim
Hayter then kicked the extra point that proved to be the difference
in. the game. T-A photo

.FOR. ALL GOOD
By Ross Haugh
Hail the
champs
This was certainly a good year for Tiger baseball
teams that have been without championships for quite a
few years.
Of course, the biggest news was the Detroit Tigers
appearing in a World Series for the first time in 23 years,
This had to be one of the most exciting ball clubs in
many a year and they didn't disappoint their fans by
using .the same come-from-behincl tactics against the
Cardinals as they did all season long against their regular
American league foes.
Closer to home, the Dashwood Tigers using the
same methods as their more famous namesakes brought
home the Ontario Baseball. Association Intermediate
"D" championship after an absence of 15 years.
This year's Tigers, guided by Glenn Webb
knocked off the northern champs from Mattice in a
couple of high scoring games on the weekend.
Dashwood with an eight run rally in the fourth inning
Saturday took the first game 12-9 and came back
Sunday with a 12-8 win with four runs in their first trip
to the plate.
This was the first time a Northern Ontario team
has made an attempt to win the provincial title. The
calibre of play was far from championship style but
each game provided lots of excitement for the large
crowds.
Manager Mano Dupuis of Mattice told us his club
was very happy with the trip and the courtesy extended
by the Dashwood management and fans. Both clubs
were obviously far from their best due to lengthy
layoffs after winning the right to compete in the
Ontario final.
Dashwood eliminated the Walsingham Senators
on September 15 and were idle except for one
Huron-Perth playoff game with Mitchell since that time.
Similarly, Mattice cinched their group title at about the
same time and were certainly hampered by the long trip
to Dashwood, about 765 miles.
Some of the Mattice players brought their wives
and families along for the weekend, making it sort of a
fall holiday.
For one member of the Mattice club it was a
homecoming weekend. Barry Gibson, a native of
Wingham was in left field for the opening contest and
appeared as a pinch hitter in the final game.
Gibson, who we remember as a Wingham softball
star a few years back has been the Canadian National
Railway station agent at Mattice for the past two years.
We were impressed with the friendliness of the
Mattice officials and players that we met during their
short stay in the district.
Due to the fact, the club was not guaranteed a set
amount of money for the trip south, each player took
care of his own expenses and will then receive a share of
the money the Mattice team receives from the split of
the two Dashwood gate receipts.
One member of the MattiCe pitching staff;4 lanky
left hander named Willie St. Louis showed plenty of
promise • but needs plenty of pitching coaching in
learning the proper ways to assume the proper set
position on the mound with men on the base paths. He
seems to have a lot of natural ability but was called for
balks on several occasions during the weekend series.
Congratulations to both Tiger clubs winning
championships.
Not in Tigertown
Following is an item that appeared in Saturday's
issue of Newsweek Magazine.
"While other leisure activities expand, baseball is
shrinking and polls indicate little hope of resurgence.
Baseball is sick and it is going to get sicker as long as-its
leaders keep ignoring its problems.
"Every year it becomes harder to even sit
through, much less enjoy, a nine inning game, and it is
almost impossible for anyone but the most hypnotized
fans to stay really interested in an endless 162-game
schedule. Baseball has become an anachronostic bore."
This may be true in some parts of North America
but don't try to sell that idea in Detroit or Dashwood
this week. Detroit is still recuperating from one of the
most enthusiastic celebrations ever held anywhere and
the police village of Dashwood erupted with a small
celebration of its own after the local Tigers took the
OBA "D" championship.
The hero of the Detroit Tiger World Series
victory, Mickey Lolich has received some special spoils.
Washington Boulevard in Detroit has been temporarily
renamed Lolich Boulevard and Mickey, a sergeant in the
Michigan National Guard has been exempted from KP
duty for one full year.
In Bill Freehan's neighbourhood, about 250 kids
from St. Bede's grammar school went over to the Tiger
catcher's house and staged a celebration on the front
lawn.
