Exeter Lions Club will
canvass the town of Exeter
October 23 and Centralia and
Huron Park October 24 for
funds to assist the Canadian
National Institute for the Blind
to continue their work.
• Jack Clements, district field
secretary, knows the problems
of the blind because he is blind.
He relates this touching true
story for our readers, to better
acquaint them with the great
courage and determination of
the blind — and to show where
money is spent and the good it
does.
Five year old Angela Goodale
took the drawing to her pretty
dark-haired mother and put it on
the table.
"Describe it to me Angela"
said Mary.
"Well, it's orange, and it is a
pumpki.i, and it has funny
shaped eyes (triangles) and a
funny mouth.' She stopped for
a moment and then added, "and
its round".
Angela was describing her
drawing from kindergarten to
her mother, Mary Goodale of
Strathroy, who is blind. Mary
lost her sight when she was
sixteen during a hunting
accident. She had only been here
a few months from her native
Holland. So she had to learn
about Canada and blindness at
the same time.
Mary met her husband, Don,
when he interviewed her for a
'newspaper story. Mary was a
Home Teacher with The
Canadian National Institute for
the Blind in Sudbury at the
time.
Last year, Don decided to
change careers, and Mary went
back to work to put her husband
through school. She taught skills
for daily living to many blind
people in this area.
Mary has few problems
around the house and has
discovered many small tricks
that make her housework easier.
"When I vacuum I use
furniture and carpets as aguide.
As for cooking, I have Braille
markings on most appliance
controls. I am probably more
cautious than the average
housewife, but when something
spills, I clean it up right away so
I don't forget where it is."

:and keep it up! The *gong
streak seems to. suit 'South
Huron well.
School spirit is an essential
ingredient to the life of any
collegiate and unfortunately
South Huron has had a few years
of merely' existing, due to a
rather sad lack of enthusiasm.
Last year, however, the
students seemed to be raised out
of their apathy and became
active, patriotic citizens of
South Huron.
Perhaps two major
achievements deserve the credit
for this phenomenon.
The first is the beautiful new
addition that has created a
thoroughly modern high school.
The second is that the senior
team in football won a rare
honour—the Huron/Perth
Championship.
At any rate, when I returned
Of course there are many
things a blind housewife can not
do which increases the cost of
running the household. Grocery
shopping is difficult and ,if Mary
wants to go to the hairdresser,
she takes a taxi.
"The last thing Don does
before he leaves in the morning
is take a look at Angela and
make sure she is presentable."
Angela accepts the fact that
her mother is blind without any
trouble. Often she forgets. She
will nod her head instead of
answering. But there are other
housewives who happen to be
blind who need assistance.
Mary Goodale used to teach
newly blind housewives. It is up
to you to see that this important
program. continues.
to the school after a few.months
absence, I was struck by its new
personality.

The Drama Club. this Year ,is
headed bY Mr. Roy Stevenson.., The member§ ,of tha Drama
Executive are: president, George
Farewell; secretary treasurer,
Judy Burke; set design, Barbara
Eliott; Peggy Pryde;
and wardrobe mistress, Jo-Anne Burke.
The club offers three one-act
plays for its first presentation
and.I think we can all look
forward to an exciting night at
the theatre, We'll hear more
from the Drama Club soon.
I might add that the response
for the club was very good;
however, we would have
appreciated more interest from
our male population. Would-be
actresses are abundant at South
Huron, but our actors are either
scarce or terribly shy.

Career Day was held at South
Huron Hospital last week and
many aspiring nurses departed
for the hospital on Tuesday
afternoon for what proved to be
a very interesting presentation.
This type of career
programming is most
enlightening and more should be
planned for the future.
The Chocolate Bar Campaign
will begin soon. The student
council and yearbook
representatives from the classes
were briefed on this last week.
In return for their attention,
they were gifted with free
chocolate bars. A Sneak
Preview—the bars are the same,
and just as delish!

South Huron's golf team has
been selected. Our pro golfers
will compete for the inter-school
championship. Golf is a
relatively new part of our sports
programme and we all wish the
group lots of luck. * * *
A reminder: the South Huron
student body elected its Student
Council Executive last year,,
The members are; president,
Ron Durand; vice Kesident,
shari Robinson; social convener,
Linda BOUrne;seerateTY-treasurer,
Jean Jennison..
It, is too early in the Year to
comment on their activities, but
I'M sure that under such
competent leadership, the
council will prove its worth once
again.
*
Something South Huron 'has
lacked in the past is a school
newspaper and many students
will be happy to hear that one is
struggling to make an
appearance soon.
If all goes well, a full-fledged
newspaper will be distributed on
at least a monthly basis, in the
near future,
I feel that this is tremendous
news for the students, since a
successful newspaper is
invaluable to any large group
such as a school embodies.
