Ken McKinnon, director of the
Ontario Milk Marketing Board,
said in Clinton last week the
board proposes to adjust quotas
of producers seriously affected
by Ontario's newly-introduced
milk-price pooling operation.
The pooling, which started this
month, involves equalization of
financial returns for farmers who
previously shipped milk to
dairies for bottling, and their
colleagues, whose milk went to
processors at a lower price.
Traditionally, the dairies paid
about twice as much as milk
manufacturers for grade A milk.
Many farmers who have been
selling their product to dairies
have objected to the board's
move, claiming they would have
to sell their dairy herds or suffer
sharp reductions in income be-
cause of the pooling policy.
Marketing board quotas would
be equal to or larger than those
previously established by dair-
ies, 260 farmers attending the
annual meeting of the Huron
County milk committee were told.

products, Mr. McKinnon told
producers the consumer is boss
and "we must meet the chal-
lenge as to what she wants."
Mr. McKinnon suggested more
money for advertising is needed
to promote dairy products in
Ontario. "We will, however, have
to recognize that dairy substit-
utes will take a small percentage
of the market," he said.
Clifford McNeil of RR 6 God-
erich, was elected chairman of
the Huron association, succeed-
ing Martin Baan, RR 3 Walton.
The outgoing chairman de-
fended the provincial board, tell-
ing producers "to think twice
before you say anything against
the board. This coming year is
going to be the test of strength
for it. If it fails, it will be an-
other generation before we have
anything like it," he said.
"We cannot afford to stand
alone," Mr. Haan continued. "We
may farm alone, but we can't
get our markets alone."
Other executive members
elected last week are: vice-
chairman Simon Hallahan of
B1 y t h; secretary - treasurer,
Boyd Taylor, RR 3 Walton.

the need to further consolidate
