sets.
A donation of $10 was voted
to the Cancer Society and $60

in Hong Kong.
The ticket on the linen was
drawn by President Mrs. Ed
Hearn and won by Mrs. R. Mc-
Innis, 78 Gidley St.

convention were read and dis-
cussed. Those planning to attend
from Exeter are Mr. and Mrs.

Mrs. Ray Shoebottom's kit-
chen, Centralia, was a busy spot
last Wednesday forenoon when
she turned out over 300 tea
biscuits for the centennial tea
served by the ladies in the church.
She has kindly given the recipe
she uses. Each homemaker has
a favorite recipe for making tea
biscuits but we can always learn
and improve by comparing with
others.

Square dancers
complete season
Exeter Promenaders wound up
their dancing season last Wednes-
day night with the annual box
social. This year the positions
were reversed, with the men pro-
viding the lunches and the ladies
bidding on the auction. Many in-
teresting and unusual designs of
boxes were prominent.
Even though dancing has ceas-
ed, the Promenaders still have
several activities planned for the
summer. On June 21 a chicken
barbecue is being held in River-
view Park followed by squar e
dancing in the arena. Also in
June the club will hold their an-
nual family picnic in the park.
The beach party will be held in
July at Port Franks.
of baking ammonia and oil of
lemon was almost too much in
former years but prices have
changed and maybe that quantity
would be less today. Cream the
butter and lard, add sugar and
cream some more. Add eggs and
add alternately flour and milk
with the ammonia. Chill dough
for rolled cookies.
Bake in a 375 degree oven
for 6 to 8 minutes according to
the size of the cookies.
Now at the drug store one can
buy "Lemonia" for making these
lemon cookies. Each package
contains three "buds" of lemon
oil and a container of baking am-
monia. The recipe for Lemonia
lemon Cookies is on the outside
of the package. This gives a more
exact quantity of baking ammonia
and oil of lemon.
Sy the way, Mrs. Craig has
quite a novelty in a house plant.
Last fall she potted a small
pepper plant from the garden
before it was touched with frost.
The plant has grown and now
has two red sweet peppers and
another that is turning red. The
peppers are about 3 inches long
and 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
She also has a plant of hot red
peppers.
Sift flour, baking powder and
salt. Rub shortening in, until
mixture is like coarse crumbs.
Mix soda with buttermilk until
it is dissolved. Add to the dry
ingredients, mixing till they are
thoroughly dampened. Turn onto
a floured board and knead lightly
for about 30 seconds.
Roll out until about 1/2-inch
thick. Cut with floured biscuit
cutter and bake at 450 degrees
for 12-15 minutes.
LEMON COOKIES
With so much talk of the olden
days and the serving of Centen-
nial teas many old recipes have
been revived. Someone asked
about the Lemon Cookies that
were made with baking ammonia
and oil of lemon. Mrs. Louise
Craig, Carling St., very kindly
gave us her recipe which she
hunted up in her recipe file,
1 cup lard and butter mixed
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sweet milk
4 baking ammonia
5e oil of lemon
pinch salt
4 cups flour
Dissolve ammonia in warm
milk until thoroughly dissolved.
