Overall winner was Larry Cann, with broom, their second annual family bonspiel. Pictured above are the winners his wife Rosalie and the two Youngash brothers, Alan and Roland. Don Farrell's goal at 12:30 of the third period gave the Ex- eter Legion Bantams a 4-3Sham- rock League win over Strathroy in the Exeter Arena last Wednes- day night. In the first game of the scheduled triple header the Ex- eter PeeWees rallied for single goals in the last two periods to tie Strathroy 2-2 while the midget game was cancelled because the visitors were unable to make the trip. Lorne Haugh' s Legion Bantams who have been having their prob- lems breaking into the win column so far this season built up a 3-0 lead over the visitors in the first two periods as goalie Mike Mc- Laughlin came up with several clutch saves to keep Strathroy off the scoresheet. John Braid, Chris Riddell and Larry Haugh each scored to give Happy New Year for Hawks the locals a three goal bulge but the Strathroy club came back strong to score three times in the third period but Farrell's winning marker took the steam out of the loser's attack. The Strathroy Pee Wee club hit for two first period goals in the first game of the evening but the locals kept the pressure on and came out of the game with a hard earned 2-2 tie. Exeter goaltender Jim Brown settled down after the first period to blank the visitors in the re- maining stanzas while Barry Smithers with a second period goal and Dale Parkin with a mark- er in the third tying the score. A total of nine penalties were called in the close contest with the visitors picking up five minors. The Exeter Junior Hawks started the new year off on the right foot by trouncing Mount Brydges 9-1 in Glencoe on Tues- day night. Their win was the third victory in a row for the Hawks and moved them to within three points of the second place Port Huron Beefeaters. Dave Taylor played the final period in goal for the Hawks and was given good support as Livermore, Chipchase and Wil- lert scored to give Exeter their eighth victory of the season. The lo- cals, who received some badly needed player sup- port with the addition of forwards John Cooper and Bob Livermore from Clinton, should be ready to make their move. Last year's Shamrock League champions have two games remaining with every club in the circuit and could possibly pick up six points this week as they play three games against the two weakest clubs in the seven-team loop. The locals played in Glencoe against Mount Brydges last Tuesday night and will meet Mount Brydges in the Exeter Arena on Friday night, The Hawks will then travel to Delhi on Sun- day afternoon to face the cellar dwelling Delhi club to complete the three-game sked which the Hawks must win to remain in contention for first place. The Earl Wagner coached club is currently riding a two-game winning streak and is expected to be at full strength to start the new year off right. Earlier this year the Hawks were short on players and had to insert some midget players into the line- up but now the club boasts three strong forward lines and a tough defense. The newly formed line of John Cooper at centre with Bill Chipchase and Bob Livermore on the wings has given the Hawks a more potent scor- ing attack and taken some of the pressure off the Dennis Morrissey, Ron Broderick, Scott Burton at- tacking unit that was the local's biggest line before the arrival of the Clinton boys. Cooper and Liver- more were two of Clinton's top scorers last year when the Junior Colts won the Ontario Junior 'D' title after ousting the Hawks in six games. Fred Lamb, who is the top Exeter goal scorer with 15 along with Bob Moir and hustling Fred Wells, make up the Hawks' third line while Larry Willert, Craig Davidson and Bill Bourne make up the Hawks' defensive corps. Rick Stade has played most of the games in goal for the Hawks with Dave Taylor as the backup man and Hawk officials hope to have Tom Glavin in the lineup within the next few weeks. Glavin played with the Hawks last year and was one of the main reasons why they won the league title. At the present time the locals have a 7-5 rec- ord but seem to be strengthened by the player addi- tions and a shakeup of the forward lines and for these reasons are expected to be at or near the top when the schedule ends on February 11. Livermore led all goalgetters with three for the night while Chipchase and Lamb each sunk a pair. Dennis Morrissey and Larry Willer t picked up the other Hawk goals. The locals held a 2-0 lead after the first period but if it had not been for the outstanding netminding of Rick Stade the Hawks would have been trailing by a couple of goals. The Exeter club appeared listless in the first frame and Mount Brydges carried most of the play with Stade com- ing up with some very neat saves as his defense failed to clear the puck from in front of the net. The Hawks found their legs in the second period however and after Mount Brydges' Don Ers- kine had cut their lead to 2-1 the locals rammed in four goals to take a 6-1 lead into the final 20 vs Jr. Hawks Town dance on Friday plastic cushion called a Hot Seat (it really works). Leslie Page, Doug Ferguson and Doug Fairbairn each scored 1 goal for the Red Wings. The lone goal for the Blue Wings was scored by John Vriese. The club has three straight exhibition game victories under its belt and is looking stronger every time out. Pollen's crew defeated St. Marys twice and Parkhill once in preseason games and will start the season with five veterans in the starting lineup in Mitchell. Glenn Shipman will start the year at centre with Gary Ford and Bryan Baynham on the forward line and Dave Taylor and Robert Wolfe at the guard posi- tions. BOWLING The Huron-Perth basketball schedule is set to start on Jan- uary 11 and all four South Huron District High School teams ap- pear ready to vie for a confer- ence playoff birth. Miss Lauretta Siegner will coach the Senior Girls club this year while Miss Pat Hergott who is in her first year as a basketball coach will handle the Junior Girls. Bill Pollen and Bruce Shaw will coach the Senior and Junior Boys re- spectively. There is a total of ten teams in this years conference but South Huron will play a six game sche- dule and will have to finish in the first four teams in order to make the post season playoffs. The locals will play Mitchell, Stratford Northwestern, Goder- ich, Listowel, St. Marys and Stratford Central during the re- gular season. Other teams in the conference include S eafor t h, Clinton and Wingham. The Senior Girl squad who went through last season undefeated have six holdovers and with the addition of some members of last years junior club the club is expected to be a prime contender for the title. The team has had several practice sessions but Miss Siegner has yet to pick a starting lineup. Players vying for positions on the club include holdovers Linda Hunter-Duvar, Iris Marshall, Ann Mickle, Lynn and Judy Lesnick along with Mary Kennedy, Dora Goodale, Brenda Dinney, Darlene Parsons, Ger- aldine Blair, Nancy Strang, Enid Blackwell, Diane Stone, Mar- garet Salmon, Karen Finkbeiner, Joanne Desjardine and Margaret Bosch. 31 27 24 19 17 15 11 9 SD NH RE SH FE LL DU MA LUC AN MEN (D. For a while early in the season it seemed that New York was going to make things rough on the four con- tenders but the Rangers have slipped down to with- in six points of the hapless Boston Bruins leaving little doubt as to which four clubs will be in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. At the time of this writing the Chicago Black Hawks have a one-point lead over the Montreal Canadiens in the race for first place while last year's champion Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs are very close behind. The Black Hawks, who rely on two players for the bulk of their scoring, have been on tap or near the top of the heap through- out the season but the well balanced Habs should overtake them although the Chicagoans will be no pushover. ALL-STAR SELECTIONS WILL BE TOUGH The NHL sportswriters and sportscasters, who pick the all star teams after the halfway point in the season will have their hands full in choosing the two dream teams. Bobby Hull of the Black Hawks, who is off to another fabulous start with 29 goals in 31 games, is the only sure bet for a birth on the squad at left wing while all the other positions will be a tossup. Hull's closest pursuers for the left wing posi- tion would seem to be Frank Mahovlich of the Leafs and Dick Duff of the Canadiens who have 10 and eight goals respectively. Stan Mikita, Norm Ullman and Jean Beliveau again should be prime candi- dates for the centre position on the all star lineup. The fact that Ullman has played several games at left wing could hurt the veteran's chances of making the team although Mikita, who is considered one of the best playmakers in the league would seem to be the unanimous choice. For the last 15 years Detroit's Gordie Howe has had almost permanent possession of right wing on the all star teams but this year two relatively newcomers are vying for right wing honours. The 38-year-old Howe, who is a perennial slow starter, has 16 goals to his credit so far while Bob Nevin of the New York Rangers has 18 and Bobby Rousseau of the Canadiens, who scored only 12 goals all last season, presently has 16 goals. Pierre Pilot of the Black Hawks and Jacques Lapierriere of the Canadiens captured the defense positions last year and these two along with Detroit's Doug Barkley, Tim Horton and Allan Stanley of the Maple Leafs and Harry Howell of the Rangers should again place high in the voting. Detroit's Roger Crozier and Glenn Hall of Chicago seem to be the prime candidates for goal- tending honours with the veteran Hall getting the nod because of the Hawks' lofty position in the standing. RUSTLINGS—Sports activities were light last week with bowling, curling and the dart leagues halting play for the holiday season. All leagues are expected to resume play this week „ Local minor hockey players will be selling hotseats in the next couple of weeks. The seats, which sell for one dollar, are ideal for a cold car or a hockey game seat. Pro- ceeds from the hotseats will go to financing Minor Hockey Night which will take place later this month . The Exeter Minor Hockey Association's annual Family Night will be staged some time in February.
