Advertising
—Continued from page 4
pirations, tying in a commodity
as part of the package deal".
But Rodgers disputes the idea
that advertisers coerce people
into buying like the pied piper
misleads the rats. He is con-
vinced that advertisers merely
appeal to our greed and envy —
they of course don't create it.
They appeal to and encourage
our materialism but don't create
it.
In our western world adver-
tising is here to stay — it's not
going to go away and a lot of the
time it fulfills a useful function.
Our approach to it is in proper
perspective if we appreciate this
point from Edward Rogers:
"They may sell me a good car or
a good lawnmower or a good meal.
They cannot sell me a good life.
The advertiser is too compla-
cently and too fashionably a pro-
phet of materialism".
I hope we know what Vance
Packard was driving at when he
dedicated his book "The Waste-
makers" to ,my mother andfath-
er who have never confused the
possession of goods with the good
life'.
There has never been a more
difficult time in which to try
and understand Jesus' saying that
a man's life does not consist in
the abundance of his possessions.
That was and is a 'hard saying'
and it is made still more difficult
by the advertisers who have us
unconsciously singing "Be a man,
drink . . . .", or "Things go
better with . . .", or "Come
alive, you're in the . . genera-
tion".
