boye, one would say Lucan resi-

Maureen Smith, 13 year old
daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J. W.

pupil at Miss Matthew's private
school, London, was one of the
two pupils in the school chosen
to attend special art classes at
the Art Gallery, beginning in Jan-
uary.
Miss Lina Abbott held her
Christmas Wednesday, Dec. 22,
when she entertained five of her
SS 2 Biddulph school-mates, of
over 70 years ago. Her guests

receive prizes
The Lucan Colleen bowling
league bowl-off was held at the
Lucan Lanes, last Tuesday even-
ing. Those winning turkeys for
hidden triples were Mrs. Wm.
Shipway, Betty Morley and Laur-
ette Blake. Those receiving boxes
of chocolates for high singles
were Thelma Hodgins, Joyce
Rummell, Cindy Bowerman and
Jessie Lewis.
Car in river
woman rescued
Mrs. Edith Johnston, while re-
turning home to Clinton last Mon-
day evening met with an accident,
when her car left Highway 4, at
the Sauble river bridge, just west
of Lucan, and landed in the river
the water coming up to the floor-
boards. Mr. and Mrs. D. R.
Childs of Seaforth, who were
passing, saw the accident, and
drove to the Lucan detachment
office, and reperted it.
Although sustaining back in-
juries Mrs. Johnston managed to
roil doWn the window, so pollee
could pull her free. Constable
Bill Simmons and Constable Neil
Campbell were assisted by an
unidentified passerby, in freeing
Mrs. Johnston. The Haskett Am-
bulance of Lucan took Mrs.Jiahri-
eton to St. Joseph's HOspital.
When all the $1 coupons were
collected they nearly filled a
large size garbage can.
Mr. Cliff Cronkite of Alice
St., Lucan, owns an abattoir at
Thorndale. Last Tuesday night
thieves broke in and made off
with $400 worth of meat includ-
ing 500 lbs. of wrapped beef
and $100 worth of bacon and
cooked meat.
Mr. Cronkite has purchased
the most vicious dog he could
find, which shall be tied up dur-
ing the day and have the run of
the place at night. He hopes this
dog will prevent a recurrence
of Tuesday night's robbery.
Rev, and Mrs. Charles Cars-
callen were married Nov. 23,
1905.
Mrs. Carscallen was the for-
mer Hulda Culbert, daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Culbert of Lucan. She was born
on Concession 2, Biddulph, just
north of Lucan. She attended SS 2
Biddulph public school, the Lucan
high school and the London Model
and Normal Schools. One of her
first schools, as teacher, was
"The Little Brick" on Main St.
St. Patrick's
school concert
The new auditorium of St. Pat-
rick's School, though not com-
pleted was sufficiently advanced,
to permit the staging of a concert
last Tuesday night. The chairman
of the school board, Mr. Jack
VanBussel was MC for the pro-
gram which began with a welcome
by Joanne Boland, Matthew
Toonders, Connie VanBussel and
Christopher Milne.
This was followed by Jr. l's
rhythm band and xylophone num-
bers, Gr. 2, a song, "Little
Donkey", and square dance, Gr.
3, colorful Christmas Wreath
drill and "A Little Dutch Song"
also "The Night Before Christ-
mas", Gr. 4 chorus, Gr. 5,6,7
Nativity Scene, Gr. 7, 8 a play,
"TV Comes to Lucan, a square
dance, musical rhythmics and
folk dance.
In between, there were recita-
tions by John Melihargey and Len
Wood, a song by Mary Co Dyre
and Margaret Toonders, piano
numbers by Frances Heenan and
Margaret Crunican.
The Nativity scene deserves
special mention. The many wing-
ed angels, carrying lighted
candles, the wise men in colorful
costumes and the little girl who
took the part of Mary, all were
particularly good.
Four little Gr. 2 pupils gave a
comic "Farewell number". Rev.
Bricklin, who was present gave
a short address stressing the ad-
vantages of the new school, with
its splendid auditorium.
The staff members were called
to the front and introduced by the
chairman.
WEEK OF PRAYER SERVICES
Once again Lucan's three
churches will unite for the Week
of Prayer services.
Monday, January 3 service will
be held in the Anglican Church,
with Rev. G. W. Sach as speaker;
Tuesday, January 4, in United
Church, with Rev. E. 0, Lan-
caster as speaker; Wednesday,
January 5, Pentecostal Holiness
Church with Rev. Andrew Brynja
of the Bible Society as speaker.
A special offering will be taken
at each service for the Bible
Society.

In spite of teeming rain, there
was a splendid Christmas eve
service, when over 100 took com-
munion. Lights were turned off
for the processional hymn when
28 choir members walked up the
centre aisle carrying lighted
Candles.
United

Lucan travelled to Strathroy
for their encounter in Shamrock
Minor Hockey this week.
Lucan pee wee's went down to
a 5-3 defeat as they wilted in the
final minutes of the game,
Lucan bantams playing short-
handed were shut out 4-0.
The Lucan midgets after hold-
ing on to 3-3 tie allowed the
Strathroy forwards to get into
the scoring zone unmolested and
they were defeated 5-3.
London Firemen i ncreased
their first place hold to four
points by defeating the Lucan
Merchants 5-4. Rankin Ford de-
feated the Ailsa Craig Flyers
4-2.
In the final Strathroy Jets in
their new uniforms outskated Lee
& Stewart to an 8-4 victory.

True to form, trouble never
comes alone. Mrs. Cronkite, who
hasn't been well since her recent
operation, was rushed back to
St. Joseph's Hospital Tuesday
where it is possible she will have
to undergo further surgery.
Their two-year-old son Randy,
while visiting his aunt Mrs. Les
Greenwood of Grand Bend, fell
and broke his leg in Sept. and
was in St. Joseph's hospital for
nine weeks. It is hoped 1966 will
be more fortunate for the family.
South in Lucan.
After their marriage the couple
went to China, where they served
as missionaries for 24 years. On
returning to Canada they secured
the position of head of the Ontario
Ladies College at Whitby.
They have one son and three
daughters, Major Charles Cars-
callen of Ottawa, Kathleen (Mrs.
Howard Gowland) of Kingston,
Alice (Mrs. Stewart Griffith) of
Ottawa and Miss Helen Cars-
callen of Toronto.
Rev, and Mrs. Carscallen cele-
brated their anniversary quietly
in their Whitby home with their
family. Although now 86 and 84
years of age they live alone and
are both enjoying good health.
Mrs. Eldon Hodgson of Alice
St., Lucan is one of Mrs. Cars-
callen's sisters.
Annual concert
Biddulph school
So great was the overflow at-
tendance at the Biddulph Central
School's third annual school con-
cert last Monday evening that it
was announced there would be a
two-night concert next year.
Bill Blane, a Grade 8 pupil,
was MC for the program which
began with "Greetings" bySusan
Gebel, Dianne Irvine, Nancy Rid-
dell and Susan Brigham. This
was followed by the Grade 1
rhythm band and xylophone num-
bers. Grade 11 staged dance num-
bers and Grade III, Santa's Fash-
ion Show. Grade IV chose aplaylet,
"The Huron Christmas Carol,"
Grade V, "A Story of Christmas
Carols," Grade VI a colorful
drill, Grade VII choral reading
and Grade VIII a play, "Good
Will Towards Women".
In between numbers Brian An-
kers, Herman Wilk, Roy Willis,
entertained with guitar numbers,
Brenda Wallis with an accordion
solo, Nancy Nickles, a tap dance,
and a reading by Nancy Weller
and Helga Krainz.
All the children were well
trained and did their parts well
especially Mrs. Clarence Har-
dy's jr. and sr. choirs.
During the program Mrs. Har-
dy was presented with a gift
from the children.

in rhyme.
Mrs. Mohr's junior girls, each
repeated a verse of a peom and
Mrs. Froats Jr. girls, sang and

mediate boys and girls each car-
ried a sign and each repeated
a verse.
Sr. boys and girls sang sev-
eral choruses, after which all
went to the basement where Santa
Claus presented to each child a
gift from the Sunday School.
CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE
A well attended carol service
was held at 11 pm Christmas
eve with Mrs. G. W. Sach at the
organ.
Pentecostal Holiness
With the pastor still away,
Rev. Ed. Corner of Lucan was
the guest Speaker at 11 am and
Miss Betty Butler of Chatham
at the evening servide.
Attend funeral
Anion those whp attended the
funeral of Mr. B. F. Lancaster,
at St. Marys, last Thursday was
his nephew, Rev, E. 0. Lancaster
and Mrs, Lancaster of Lucan.
Until his retirement Mr. Lan-
caster was postmaster at St,
Marys. lie was a member of the
Diocese of Huron, Synod, for over
60 years. Rev. Handley Perkins,
rector of St. James church, con-
ducted the 5ervice. He was as-
sisted by Bishop H. T. Apple-
yard and Rev. E. 0. Lancaster.
