Last weekend's snowfall, while reminding ev-
eryone that Christmas is here, also perked up the
area's winter sports enthusiasts who have been pa-
tiently waiting to get into action. Local skiers and
tobogganists now have their snow and a great many
people will be making their way to their favourite
hills over the holiday season,
While there are a few adequate skiing hills
around town most of the skiers head for the Grand
Bend area where the Pinery Provincial Park and
Walker Woods provide fine facilities for every kind
of winter sport enthusiast.
The Pinery Provincial Park just south of
Grand Bend is one of the most popular spots this
time of year. The park will operate two main ski.
hills and one hill for beginners this year and will
also have four toboggan runs and an outdoor skat-
ing rink. The 135 x 75 foot rink is open every day
and is the perfect thing for a skating party.
Besides the various hills the Pinery Park
boasts a Chalet which is equipped with its own first
aid room to look after any accident victims. A Poma-
Lift is also provided to make the long trip back up
the hill enjoyable.
Vehicle permits are required to enter the
Provincial Park with a yearly permit costing $5.00.
Daily permits cost S1.00 while tow charges are 500
per day per person.
FIGURE SKATING CLUB
Membership in the Exeter Figure Skating
Club is up this year and club officials are looking
for one of their best seasons ever. The club which
has a membership of 90 skaters this season meets
every Monday at the Exeter Arena to practise for
their annual carnival and skating tests.
The club has gained about 20 more members
than last year and instructress Mrs. Faye MacDonald
of Walton is working with the youngsters in prep-
aration for their annual carnival which will be staged
on February 19. The theme of this year's carnival
is "Holiday on Ice" and the event is being held
earlier than in previous years in order to give the
skaters more time to practise for their skating test
which will be tried towards the end of the season,
In addition to the carnival and upcoming test
the club will hold a Competition Day later on in the
season to judge the best skaters in each age group.
MINOR HOCKEY TOURNAMENTS
With the tittiday season upon us again there
will be a couple of minor hockey tournaments as
well as extra skating sessions for holidaying students.
Public school students skated from 4 to 5 on Tues-
days and Thursdays when school was in session but
Arena Manager Alvin Willert has increased the skat-
ing times from 2 to 4 on the same days.
Christmas holidays also mean hockey tourna-
ments and both the Exeter Pee Wees and Bantams
will be playing in tourneys over the holidays. On
Boxing Day Lorne Haugh and Lyle Riddell will take
the bantam club to the Treasure Island Gardens in
London to play in the London Suburban Hockey
Tournament. The locals have not received word as
yet as to who they will play but their first game is
scheduled for 2:00 o'clock.
The local pee wees, under the direction of
Terry Bourne and Jim Brown, will compete in the
annual Leamington tournament on December 28. The
Exeter squad will meet Blenheim in a 9:00 o'clock
contest.
Because both Christmas and New Year's fall
on Saturday the regular Saturday morning minor
hockey houseleague games will be played on the
previous Fridays.
RUSTLINGS — In addition to extra skating
time there will be more practise time for local minor
hockey teams during the holidays . . The Exeter
Junior Hawks really stood out in their new uniforms
last Friday night. The new outfits, which were pur-
chased by the Exeter Teen Town, are yellow and
white and must have had some effect on the locals
as they won their sixth game of the year, defeating
Point Edward . . Some very high scores were
turned in at the local bowling lanes this week as
the keglers took part in the annual Turkey Roll.
Hank Gosar came up with two over 300 perform-
ances with 358 and 324 while teammate Ray Van
Dorselaar rolled 361 for the highest game of the
week. Other 200 games were bowled by Bob Martin
303, Frank Brintnell 328, Don Jackson 300, Bill
Mercer 308 and Nancy Dowson 313 . . . John Cooper
and Bob Livermore, two members of Clinton's On-
tario Junior 'D' champions last year, worked out
with the Hawks last Sunday and are expected to be
in the lineup when the club travels to Point Edward
tonight (Thursday).
In closing' we would like to take this oppor-
tunity to wish all our readers a very Merry Christ-
mas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year,

AS a result of their 3.2 win
over the Sharpshooters last Fri-
day, the Plurribers are back in
the lead in the Legion Mixed Dart
League. The Plumbers who have
been on top or tied for the lead
since the start of the season have
a total of 35 points while the
SherpShooters have 34.
The Feather Flights whipped
the Mee Birds by a 4-1 score but
the Cleaners Moved into a third

Strathroy for their secondSham-
roek League win of the season.
The locals were never behine
in the fast moving contest as they
held a 4-0 lead at the end of the
first period and led 6-2 at the
end of the second frame.
Exeter goaltender Bill Farqu-
har had little to do in the game as
his mates checked the Dorchester
crew into the ice.
Defenseman turned forward,
Ron Broderick, paced the Exeter
Junior Hawks to a thrilling 9-8
victory over Point Edward at the
Exeter Arena last Friday night.
By virtue of their win over the
sixth place Redmen, the Hawks
climbed to within five points of
the second place Port Huron
Beefeaters.
Hawks coach Earl Wagner who
has had trouble finding a line
with scoring punch inserted rear-
guard Ron Broderick between
Dennis Morrissey and Bill Chip-
chase and this unit accounted for
seven of the nine Exeter tallies.
The high scoring line also picked
up a total of 11 points for the
evening with Broderick scoring
three goals and one assist, Mor-
rissey two goals and two assists
and Chipchase picking up two
goals and one assist.
The game itself was probably
the most nerve racking of the
season with the teams trading
goals through the first two per-
iods only to have the visitors
take a two goal lead with five
minutes and 31 seconds remain-
ing in the contest. Bill Chip-
chase's second goal of the night
at 15:12 cut the Point Edward lead
to 8-7 to set the stage for Brod-
erick's tying and winning mark-
ers that came only 12 seconds
apart.
For the next two weeks the
pee wees, novice, squirt and
mites houseleague which is play-
ed on Saturday mornings will be
played on Friday mornings, Last
Saturday morning the all-star
pee we es played a hockey game
at the Gardens at London. This
left the houseleague teams short
of players so we scrambled the
players that were here together
and played two games. The re-
sults will not count in the stand-
ings of the teams.
The Novice players turned out
in full force and after one hour
of play the Blue Wings defeated
the Red Wings 4-1. Brian Vicker -
man after being checked from
behind on one breakaway, finally
came through and scored two
goals with John Vriese adding
two more. The lone goal for the
Red Wings was scored by Doug
Fairbairn on a breakaway.
Detroit trounced Toronto 10-2
in the Squirt game. After losing
three straight games to Toronto
the Detroit team has won their
last two games and seem to be
getting stronger all the time.
Doug Ferguson was the big gun
for Detroit as he scored six
goals. Tommy Hayter had three
and Marty Becker one. Danny
Brintnell was the only goal scor-
er for Toronto with two goals,
In Rec League on Thursday,
Crediton displayed their best
form of the season to defeat the
strong Old Timers 11-5. In the
second game the (top team) the
Bank Boys really trounced Gra-
ham & Graham with a score of
22-5.

came off the sticks of Doug
Stanlake, Bill. Bourne, Scott Bur-
ton, Rick McDonald, Pete Law-
son and Bob Moir.
Coach Frank Boyle's club will
meet Byron on Friday night at
the Exeter Arena and will be
seeking their third straight win,

With less than a minute re-
maining Wagner pulled netminder
Rick Stade in favour of an extra
attacker and the Hawks tied the
game when Broderick slapped
Bill Bourne's rebound past Point
Edward goalie Ted Ateo. The
teams faced off at center ice
and Broderick again got the draw
and made a perfect pass to Chip-
chase who relayed the puck back
to Broderick who made no mis-
take catching the lower lefthand
corner of the net to give the
Hawks the victory. Broderick's
winning marker came with only
one second remaining in regu-
lation time.
John Loader and Bob Moir
scored the other Exeter tallies.
The locals will play their next
game tonight (Thursday) in point
Edward and will not play again
until January 4 when they travel
to Glencoe to face Mount Brydges.
The Hawks next home game will
be on January 7 with Mount Bryd-

Exeter Pee Wees brought their

wins, one tie and two losses.
Larry Davies gave the locals
a brief 1-0 first period lead
when his passout from behind
the net struck the goaltender's
pads and bounced in but the losers
tied the score before the end of
the initial frame. Barry Smithers

Exeter netminder Jim Brown

with one of the goals coming with
the locals a man short but Barry
Smithers second goal of the game
midway in the period turned out
to be the winner.
Larry Haugh of the local bant-

in Shamrock League play.
Pete Lawson and Jim Hayter

while John Loader and Mike Hoy
added a goal each.
SQUIRTS TIE LEADERS
Stellar goaltending by Doug
Fairbairn enabled the Exeter
Squirts to play the unbeaten Lucan
club to a 1-1 tie in a Shamrock
League tilt that was played in
Lucan last Saturday afternoon.
Fairbairn was a standout
throughout the contest as he re-
peatedly thwarted Lucan scoring
attempts. Perry Stover, the lo-
cals leading scorer took a pass
from linemate John Courtney and
skated in alone to give Exeter a
1-0 first period lead but the league
leaders tied the game with a goal
midway through the second
frame. Each club had several
good scoring chances after the
Lucan goal but both goaltenders
came up with clutch saves.
The locals do not play in Lucan
again until January 8 when they
meet Lambeth.

4-3 decision to the visitors while
the pee wees went down by a 3-1
score.
The midget's Glenn Stire play-
ed an outstanding game in the

his third shutout of the young
season as he came up with sev-
eral good saves during the con-
test.
Bill Fairbairn and Jim Hay-
