II NEWB TIRE & BATTERY 242 Main North Exeter 235-0330 The Port Huron Beefeaters registered a pair of wins over the Exeter Hawks last weekend to topple the locals into third place in the Shamrock League. The Hawks who were defeated 4-3 and 8-3 now have eight points and trail the first place Belmont Hat- ters by eight and the second place Beefeaters by six points. After holding the Port Huron squad to a 2-2 tie in the first per- iod the Hawks weakened to lose the Saturday night game in Port rt Bob Moir Injured Minor The Exeter pee wees, ban- tams and midgets all recorded wins over Lucan at the local arena last Wednesday night in Shamrock League action with the pee wees winning 8-0, the ban- tams 2-1 and the midgets by a 5-0 score. On Monday night the pee wees continued their undefeated streak with a 4-1 win in Strathroy while the bantams were on the short end of a 7-3 score. Terry Bourne's pee wee club had little trouble with Lucan in Wednesday's first game as they scored four big goals in the final period for their sec- ond straight win over the Lu- can club. Leftwinger Larry Davies led the Exeter attack with a pair of goals while single goals came off the sticks of Steve Riddell, Dale Parkin, Dennis Ferguson, Brad Klumpp, Randy Tiernan and Peter Kleinstiver. Goalie Jim Brown picked up the shutout for the locals. The bantam contest was the most exciting of the night with Chris Riddell scoring the tie breaking goal with only two min- utes remaining in regulation time to give Exeter a 2-1 victory. Both teams scored in the sec- ond period after a scoreless initial frame with Joe O'Rourke giving the locals a temporary 1-0 lead at the five minute mark but the visitors tied the score six minutes later to set the stage for Riddell's winning mar- ker. A total of 16 penalties were called in the midget game with the locals picking up 10 but the powerful club hit for a pair of goals in each of the last two frames to register a 5-0 shut- out and remain unbeaten. Bill Fairbairn opened the scor- ing at 14;10 of the first period and that's all goaltender Glenn Stire needed as he whitewashed the visitors the rest of the way. Rightwinger Mike Hoy led the Exeter club with a pair of tal- lies while Barry Baynham and John Loader added singletons. Huron by an 8-3 score. The Beef- eaters scored three times in each of the last two frames while the locals managed a single goal. The Hawks took al-0 lead in the first period when Jim Hayter took a pass from Bill Bourne and fired the puck past Beefeater netrnin- der Bill Stringer at 5:20 but the winners came back with two quick tallies to go ahead. Larry Will- ert's third goal of the season at the 12:39 mark tied the score and ended the scoring in the first period. The winners came on strong in the second period and jumped into a 4-2 lead before Jim Hay- ter's second goal of the night cut Port Huron's lead to one goal. Hayter's goal, however, was the last of the evening for the Hawks as the homesters domi- nated the play from that point. The shorthanded Hawks who played without the services of highscoring center Bob Moir who was injured when he collided with a goalpost in the Friday night game were assessed with 13 of the 24 penalties that were handed out by referee Jerry Price. Dennis Morrissey who is the Hawks sec- ond top scorer also received an injury in the Friday tilt and was not performing up to par in the return game. Because of the lack of players the Hawks brought up a midget line of John Loader, Bill Fair- bairn and Jim Hayter and the lads performed very well intheir first eter Arena last Saturday night. The Exeter squad have played five games this season. Dorchester took a 3-0 first period lead and increased their margin to 5-0 in the third period before Peter Lawson scored the lone Exeter goal half way through the third frame. Officials Clarence Boyle and Joe Wooden called 12 penalties in the rugged tilt. Bantams Although Lorne Haugh's Exeter Bantams failed to win a game in St Clair Shores, Michigan last weekend the youngsters en- joyed themselves immensely. The local hockeyists played games on Saturday and Sunday at Gordie Howe's Hockeyland and were treated royally during their stay. The players stayed with a member of the St Clair Shores team overnight. attempt at junior hockey. The youngsters were one of the Hawks' better attacking units on Friday night and came up with a pair of goals on Saturday. The locals led most of the way in the Friday night game but suf- fered a third period letdown to lose their second game in a row on home ice by a 4-3 score. Bob Moir's ninth goal of the season at 12:29 of the first frame gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead. Moir took a pass from linemate Den- nis Morrissey and carromed a shot in off a Port Huron defen- der. Each team scored a pair of goals in the second period with Morrissey and Fred Lamb giving the Exeter club a 3-2 lead. The third period was all Port Huron, however, as the visitors tallied twice while goalie Don Galloway held the locals scoreless. Referee Gus Boussey of Sea- forth handed out 15 penalties in the crowd pleasing tilt with the Hawks picking up eight. Standings; Belmont Port Huron Exeter Strathroy Point Edward Delhi Mt. There will be 16 more weeks of bowling after this week's action and anything can happen. In the ladies' leagues which operate on Tues- day and Thursday evenings the Happy Gals and Blowettes lead their leagues with 62 and 67 points respectively. The Happy Gals are eight points out in front of the Pinpoppettes and the Trailers who are tied for second place while the Hot Dogs are pres- ently in third place with 52 points. The race in the ladies' B' league is much tighter however, with the Blowettes with 67 points holding a slim one-point lead over the Mighty Mice while the Handicappers are holding down third place with a total of 62 points. The Jolly Jills are in fourth place 17 points behind the leaders. Phyllis Haugh of the Pinpoppettes holds the high average and the high single while Norma Cole- man of the Happy Gals has the high triple of 851 in the ladies' A' loop. Haugh's high single game is 370 and her league leading average is 216. In the ladies' Thursday night 'B' league the Little Hopes' Lila Smith is the leader in all three departments with a high single of 306, a high triple of 809 and the leading average of 218. Only six points separate the first four teams in the men's 'A' league with Russ' Billiards in first place with 36 points, three ahead of the second place Rockets. The Canners are currently in third place with 31 points while the fourth place Fairlanes have 30. Ray Smith of the Billiards came up with a 368 game last week to take over the high single in the 'A' league while Art Finlayson of the Seaforth Tigers and Jack Fuller of the Rockets hold the high triple and high average respectively. Finlayson has a high triple of 885 while Fuller's league leading average is 244. In the men's Wednesday night 'B' league, the Crystal Loggers who have 35 points are one point ahead of the second place Beatles while the Pepsis and the Milkmen are deadlocked in third place with 30 points. Glenn Stire, Harold Wolfe and Charlie Att- hill are presently holding the individual titles with Stire holding the high single of 326, Wolfe the high triple of 765 and Atthill the high average of 208. The Guttersnipes are the leaders of the Fri- day night Mixed League with 61 points, seven more than the second place Rioters while the Blowers and Twisters are next with 48 and 44 points respectively. In the Sunday night Mixed League the Shabooms are currently holding a nine point margin over the second place Cool Cats with the Globetrotters and the Dumb Bells in third and fourth place with 50 and 42 points. The Cheerleaders have 48 points and the Rheu- matics 45 while the third place Mickey Wonders and fourth place Rollettes have 34 and 27 points re- spectively. LADY CURLERS HOLD BONSPIEL The Exeter Ladies' Curling Club held their first Invitational Bonspiel at the local club last Wed- nesday and although there were no winning Exeter rinks the renovations at the Exeter Curling Club received some very favourable comments. Lady curlers from Seaforth, RCAF Clinton, Forest, RCAF Centralia, St. Marys and Strathroy took part in the bonspiel. A great many of the con- testants commented on the fine conditions at the local club. The lady curlers have staged a couple of bonspiels since the start of the season while the men will be having some 'spiels after Christmas with the first competition coming New Year's Day against RCAF Centralia. RUSTLINGS — Lanky Rick Allen of the Port Huron Beefeaters is the leading scorer in the Sham- rock Junior 'D' league. The tall centerman who played for Point Edward last year has 25 points . . . Exeter bowlers will really be bearing down this week as it is turkey time again. The annual turkey roll is under way again at the Exeter Lanes with the ladies competing this week and the men next week. The Mixed League will vie for turkey this Friday and Sunday night . . , John Loader, Jim Hayter and Bill Fairbairn of the Exeter Midget club played a pair of games for the Hawks last weekend and were one of Exeter's better attacking units. The midget line was skating at all times and with a little bit of luck could have had a couple of goals in the Friday night contest with Port Huron . . By the look of last week's bowling results it seems like a lot of bowlers thought the turkey roll was last week. Ten keglers came up with 300 plus games with Phyllis Haugh's 370 game tops. Other big games included Norma Coleman 350, Nancy Dowson 321, Art Fin- layson 335, Ray Smith 368, Har Brintnell 356, liar Holtzman 302, Stan Frayne 317, Don Couture 311 and Harold Wolfe 305.
