1966 Volkswagen owners
are going to get a big kick out of this.
The new Volkswagen has a bigger engine.
It's about 20% more powerful than this year's
model. So it accelerates much faster. And it doesn't
get short-winded on long hills any more.
Surprisingly enough, our 1966 engine doesn't
drink any more gas than the old one did. Volkswagen
owners will still get around 38 miles to the gallon.
The only difference is that they'll get them faster
from now on.
In case you think we've just gone power mad,
we'd like to make if clear that the engine isn't the
only thing that's new about the 1966 Volkswagen.
For instance, we've also put in a new,
thermostatically-controlled heater booster to keep
HUNTER •DUVAR LTD.,
VW owners warmer in winter. We've fitted safety
locks to the front seat backs so they won't tip
forward when the car brakes quickly. And we've
added a four-way emergency flasher to make night
stops less hazardous.
There are some other new features, too, but
we're saving those to show you when you come in.
One last thing. Some people thought we'd
changed the shape of our car this year, They needn't
have worried. It's still pretty difficult
to tell a 1966 Volkswagen from a 1965
or even a 1955,
Unless you're driving it, that is.

Henry Hoffman of Dashwood,
a retired mail driver, had a
wealth of memories to share with
his family and friends when he
celebrated his ninetieth birthday
Sunday. During his long and in-
teresting lifetime Mr. Hoffman
served 45 years carrying the Ro-
yal Mail between Exeter, Grand
Bend and Dashwood.
Mr. Hoffman was born in Hay
Township within two miles of
Dashwood and has lived a nd
worked in this area all his life.
He is still an ardent baseball
and hockey fan and follows the
action of the local teams. Up
until last year he attended most
of the games in the village but
this became too much of a strain
on his health and now he fol-
lows the accounts of their games
in the local paper and watches
NHL hockey on television.
Mr. Hoffman received recog-
nition in 1946 when he retired as
mail carrier between Exeter and
Grand Bend. Mr. Hoffman started
ding the weekend with the Stee-
per family.
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Dietrich,
Sylvia and Karen attended a din-
ner and reception held at St.
Joseph's Parish in Stratford on
Sunday for Father John Corriv-
eau.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hod-
gins attended the McCutcheon-
Bodkin wedding at the Anglican
church in Florence Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. M. McLay of
Palmerston were Sunday guests
with Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Powe
and family.
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Zavitz
of Tillsonburg were weekend
visitors at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Ray Lammie.
carrying express, passenger s
and mail over this route in 1901
driving a stage coach and carry-
ing a pistol as protection from
bandits. In 1909 Mr. Hoffman
retired the old stage coach for
one of the first trucks and old-
timers in the area can still
remember the people gathering
along the road to watch him
speed along at a terrific 15 miles
per hour.
Horses were still valuable and
used in this service in the win-
ter time due to road conditions.
It was not until about 1940 that
roads were snowplowed regu-
larly and so many trips were
made with a horse and sleigh.
Upon retiring Mr. Hoffman in-
dicated that he wished to retire
a couple of years before this
but kept working until the war
was over
Mr. Hoffman's memory is still
good and he can remember his
early life in the Dashwood area.
He worked in the planing mill
with his uncle before starting
to drive the mail stage.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman had
four children and the family has
grown to include 12 grandchildren
and seven great grandchildren.
The children include Mrs. Nor-
man Evans (Merta) Richmond
Hill, Mrs. Mervin Tieman (Alice)
of Dashwood, Mrs. Ken McCrae
(Gertrude) of Dashwood and
Harry, also of Dashwood.
Besides following the local
sports scene Mr. Hoffman has a
keen interest in the community
and follows this through the local
paper. Although his eyes aren't
as good as they used to be he
still reads the complete paper
with the aid of a magnifying
glass. He knows most of the
residents of the village and of
course, all the residents know
him.
