$150,000 project for
IGA nears completion
When customers walk through
the new automatic doors of Darl-
ing's IGA at the grand opening
coming in the near future they
will be stepping into one of the
most modern grocery stores in
the area. The $150,000 expan-
sion program at the store is
nearly completed and it is ex-
pected that the grand opening
will be held in approximately
two weeks.
Exeter's old opera house had
to he demolished to make room
for the new store which has more
than doubled in size. The original
store which has been remodelled
had a floor area of 3,500 square
feet. The new store has an area
of 8,600 square feet and the en-
tire store has been planned by
experts to make shopping easier
and faster.
The six month expansion pro-
gram included more than just
building an addition and remodel-
ling existing facilities. All mer-
chandising displays and equip-
ment have been replaced with
the latest in modern fixtures and
the new brighter choice of colors
greatly enhances the interior.
The new aisles in the store
have been arranged at maximum
width to allow easy passing of
grocery carts. The entire ar-
rangement of merchandise is dis-
played in such a way that the eye
naturally scans all the products
making the job of doing the weekly
shopping much easier as well as
being faster.
New checkouts will speed the
shoppers on their way. Two new
checkouts have been added to
give a total of five to allow for
faster processing after the shop-
per has completed the rounds
of the store.
The checkouts are all located
in the older section of the store
which has been cleared of cen-
tral display stands to allow for
an easier flow of traffic. Also
in the older section of the store
is the produce department flank-
ing two sides. This has been
tripled in size to make room for
a larger variety of produce. The
ice cream department is also
located close to the checkout
counters so that customers can
pick this up at their last stop
before going through the check-
out counters.
The complete building has been
planned for shopper comfort all
year. The building is completely
air conditioned and also features
electric heating throughout.
Other new features in the store
include a new dairy counter which
allows for 125 feet of display
shelves as opposed to 24 feet
previously. These new displays
allow for eye level viewing while
still maintaining a cool even tem-
perature. There are 48 feet of
frozen food display as well as a
56 foot counter for fresh and
cured meats.
The staff has been increased
for greater efficiency with the
opening of the new store but they
will still be under the direction
of long time employees such as
grocery manager, Tony Char-
rette, meat manager Russell Tie-
man, produce manager Glen Ro-
binson and head cashier and sec-
retary, Dorothy Marks.
Several special events are
planned for the grand opening.
Owner of the store Fred Darling
indicated this week he intends to
make the opening the biggest
give-away promotion in the his-
tory of Exeter.
