Getting ready .for the fair
These scenes are being repeated again and
again on dozens of farms across South Huron
as 4-H Club members prepare cattle and corn
for judging at the fair. Here two calves,
Irene and Belinda, get pruned, brushed,
scrubbed and trimmed by the Hern children
on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bern,
RR 1, Woodham. Alan, aged 10, isn't a 4-H
Club member yet, but he's preparing for the
school competitions.

The Exeter Fall Fair serves
as an achievement day for sev-
eral area 4-II agricultural clubs.
At the fair the 4-H members
display their 4-H project and
compete with fellow members
for prizes. Represented at the
fair are three 4-H clubs, the Ex-
eter Calf Club, the Sweet Corn
Club and the Stephen Grain Corn
Club. Each club shows the result
Of their summer efforts. The
Calf Club is divided into dairy
and beef members. These two
divisions show separately for the
judging of their calves and then
both the junior and senior calves
are shown for showmanship. In
the Sweet Corn Club the project
this year has been to grow an
acre of sweet corn which will
be harvested by Canadian Can-
ners. At the fair this club will
show ten ears of sweet porn and
a collection of ten insects injur-
ious to crops. The Stephen Grain
Corn Club will be showing 10 ears
of corn mounted and a collection
of ten insects.
As a 4-if member myself, hav-
ing completed nine projects, I
know what it feels like before
entering the show ring. Some are
perhaps a little jittery, thinking
their calf is not good enough or
that he will not perform the way
they want it to. No matter what
• the feeling the member should do
his best in the ring and come out
happy, be he winner or loser.
Alan's pretty proud of Irene, three
months younger than Sheila's Belinda.
He'll be exhibiting in the school com-
petitions for the third time. After
judging, the calf will be subject to the
Kirkton draw.
4-H Clubs

They're ready for the fair both calves and 4-H
Clubbers. From left, Larry Hern, 17, RR 1 Granton,
his cousins, Alan 10, Tom and Sheila Bern, 14 of
RR 1 Woodham. Larry is showing for the fourth time
in 4-H competition, Sheila for her third. Tom is one
of the clubleaders in the Exeter 4-H Calf Club
sponsored by the Exeter Agricultural Society.
