Not only do the guests expect You to stay up all night with them, but their children, who happen to be your nieces, nephews and other small buddies, expect you to be on the deck at 7 a.m. to tell them: where the cereal is; how you turn on the lawn sprinkler; "Are we going swimming soon, Uncle Bill?"; and why Daddy was so grouchy when they tried to wake him. And there are other things. Next year I'm going to buy bar- becue charcoal by the carload. I've cooked so many steaks and hamburgers I can't look a steer in the face. The manager of the local booze emporium told me the other day he'd give me a summer job next year, because I'm in there every day anyway. I've slept on a chesterfield in the living room, a couch in my study, a mattress on the attic floor, and half-reclining lawn chair, but I KICK THE WORRY HABIT! F, J. Brichlin united in marri- age Verla Marguerite Bowman and Joseph Irwin Kelly. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bowman of Granton, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Kelly, also of Granton. Given in marriage by her fa- ther, the bride chose a floor- length gown of silk organza over satin, embroidered with French lace applique and featuring a bateau neckline and elbow length sleeves. The skirt was highlight- ed with three tiers of satin from which extended a full-length cha- pel train. A headpiece of silk organza roses, accented with pearl and crystal leaves held her four-tier silk illusion veil. She carried a cascade of pink roses and white stephanotis, Miss Neda Bowman of Granton, was her sister's only attendant. She chose a rose-colored floor- length gown of Swiss shantung and carried pink and white carna- tions. Michael Kelly was best man for his brother, and the groom's twin brother, John Kelly of Guelph and Beverley Hughes of Ilderton Three showers for bride-elect Miss Joan Whitehead of Mar- garet St., Lucan was guest of honor at three pre-nuptial mis- cellaneous showers prior to her marriage in Holy Trinity An- glican Church, Lucan, Saturday, Sept 4. The first shower was staged by fellow employees at Lawson & Jones Ltd. London. Two cousins, Miss Br enda Sachs and Miss Helen Pekelo were co-hostesses at a shower held at the home of an aunt, Mrs. Ray Sachs of Hanover, when they entertained 25 couples of rela- tives. Mrs. Ted Cripps, sister of the groom-elect, entertained mem- bers from both families in her London home." While swimming at the Lucan swimming pool Sunday, Sandra Murphy, 13-year-old daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Murphy, met with a painful accident. She slipped on the diving board, hitting her back on an iron pole and the side of the tank, as she fell into the water. Peggy Elson reached over and held her until Mr. Rudy Engel (a relief life guard) and Mr. Neil Campbell of the Opp raised her carefully to the surface. She was taken by the Murdy ambulance to St. Jo- seph's Hospital, but was released Sunday evening, after x-rays. She is still confined to her bed, with a very sore back, but is hoping to be well enough to return to school when it re- opens. Just last October Sandra's father, a CPR brakeman, made the headlines, when he climbed out on his engine to rescue two and one-half year old David Bon- ner, from the track. Within four inches of the child he was hor- rified to see him thrown 12 feet away, but the child miraculously escaped. At a TV interview, which fol- lowed, Mr. Murphy stated, "I have three girls and a boy at home so I only did what any father would do." Now not one year later some- one else's father, came to the rescue of his girl. Holland native dies at Lucan MrS. Things are rather at sixes and sevens around here today. It's Second Honeymoon time, anti the Old Hattleaxe and I are flying around in a tizzy of preparation. The fact that we'll have an 18- year-old son along for part of the honeymoon trip won't slow us down. He can find a girl of his own. The main thing is to get out of town for a while. This business of running a summer hotel with the lowest rates on the continent can prove trying. The clientele has been of Jean Marie Lankin, Mrs. Russell Radcliffe, also Mr$. T. A. Watson and Mrs. M. H. Hodgins who were joint hostesses at a shower held in the home of the former. Mrs. Grace Welbourn and Miss Carol Welbourn of London were also hostesses for a shower in London. Oh well, it's all part of the game, and we enjoy having them. However, I do think it's a. bit much when they start Making reservations for next year, and assuring us they'll recommend the place to all their friends, because of the low rates, excel- lent cuisine, free drinks, and nightly entertainment (no cover charge). At any rate, with nobody booked for this week, our wedding anni- versary coming up, and daughter safely off to camp with enough clothes to go to Europe, and a bag of fruit, candy and cookies she could scarcely lift, we're getting ready for The Trip. First leg of The Trip will be up the Great Lakes, and I quote from the folder, " . long, lazy, brilliant days . . coo 1 nights with stars swinging low sky-blue waters . . 0 etc." Actually, we'll have only one and a half of those long, lazy days, but two of those star-swing- ing nights. It'll rain. I'll give odds. Eight to one, We're going on a passenger steamer known as Hugh's Boat. It used to belong to a steamer service line, but since son Hugh obtained a job this summer as Entertaiament Steward, it has become known far and wide as Hugh's Boat. After all, he has a pretty important position. He's listed an the directory of feature t $ I I I I I I I I .1- services with the Barber, Handy Shop and Motion pictures, I've promised to help him en- tertain the passengers by ren- dering my famous version of a drunk singing "I Belong Tae alasgle". He was reluctant to impose on my good nature, but I brushed aside his repeated pro- tests. His mother has promised not to embarrass him by telling him, in front of the passengers, that he needs a shoeshine, that he's not playing that piece in the right key, that he 1ft his room in a mess last time he was home, or that it's high time he was in bed. Second leg of The Trip will be by car, around the top of the Lakes. We've left nothing to chance. I've borrowed sleeping bags from our music teacher, a tent from our minister, and mon- ey from our bank manager. We have a road map. It's an oldish one, 1954, but why worry about that! Well, bon voyage, and if you'll excuse me now, I'll get out in the backyard and have another practice go at putting up the preacher's tent. It's a pretty religious tent, I expect. Every time I get it up, it sinks to its knees In an attitude of prayer. Apples accounted for nearly half of Canada's$67 million com- mercial fruit crop in 1964. —I; BRING THE FAMILY ! ADULTS ....
